  • We caught up with Aaron Gwin at the Tennessee National downhill mountain bike race to discuss the new Intense prototype DH bike he and the IFR team just started running. It's a high-pivot alloy suspension design with 29-inch front wheel and 27.5-inch rear. Aaron talks about the past few years and his struggles with the previous prototype and how they came to develop this new bike. At this point, he was not discussing specifics about suspension kinematics or geometry. #MTB #DH #downhill

      Because M29 wasn’t a friendly bike. Aaron lost his mojo after switching to intense. Even jack moir was vocal about not being comfortable with bike and set up. Look at neko now, he won local races and comfortable with his new design frame. Hope this design works for gwin

    Wish they would get a gearbox on a bike like this these days. Like the new Effigear Mimic 9-speed. Looking at the shock position and mounting points it looks like it would work where you could actually match up the bottom shock mount and the bolt spacing of the gearbox and worst case they make custom plates for the frame to allow that.
    You can used a fixed and centred rear hub which means better and stronger wheels also.

    That setup looks like it would be fighting itself with compression forces. Like almost to the point where it would almost want to extend the shock initially or put the forces through the bearings and seat stay instead of the shock. I'm not a suspension engineer though so perhaps completely wrong. I wonder what small bump is like and what pressure is required.

      yeah, I thought the same when I saw that bike. Maybe it acts differently because of the high pivot but just looking at it seems like the linkage pivot should be higher up on the seat tube so it doesnt bind. I'm guessing the design is to prevent excess pedal-bob but like you said, the angles look weird compared to other good bike designs.

    Windrock eh? I knew it as soon as I saw the opening clip of AAron riding the rock hip. Great in depth view of what was going on. Maybe because they trust the engineers who designed the bike? I'm not sure. But after talking to a lot of people they rarely blame the equipment, they always blame themselves first. This video makes me wonder about my own equipment but I've been making some changes that have made me more confident in my riding. I've never felt right in with the cockpit I had set up. I finally got bars and grips that work and feel right to me, now maybe just the stem length needs to be increased because I still feel cramped. I had to change pedals too because I didnt feel planted, now I do. I've been looking at Intense, but I never really considered them because of cost. Just outside of my budget and its more of a dream bike for me. I love the design and the look of the bikes. Some of the most gorgeous bikes out there.

      For me, from both suspension kinematics as well as the actual tubing designs, Neko's bike is pretty primitive comparatively ( basically a garage version of the Trek split-pivot ). The I-Track program that Intense is using is much more sophisticated allowing for a suspension design that reflects the progress in understanding over the past few years.

      You mean the brand in general or more the suspension design? Interesting he's back with a horst link which he's seemed to do very well with in the past. Dual link seems great for xc/trail bikes where you care a lot about pedaling efficiency but horst link seems a lot more solid for just tracking the ground and not being affected by braking. Hope this makes a big difference. I'd love to see Gwin killing it once again. Seems like a good change. But can't deny that move over to intense, and kenda tires, messed with something.

    So many pre season videos and training tips etc, lets hope the results are going to come. To me a great rider never blames his bike. All bikes take some getting used to... The fast frenchies have really upped the pace the last couple of years and even the greats such as Minnaar are struggling to keep up the pace consistently. But all the best for the seaso, would be good to see you at the sharp end of things again.

    • @dylan-5287
      @dylan-5287 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely agreed with the idea of not blaming the bike. People these days are always looking for the slightest marginal gains, paying $1000 thinking the next upgrade will change everything. In blind tests, I don't think most could even tell differences between many things. But with a pro at Aaron's level I do think he can tell. It may not even be anything wrong with the bike. But if the m29 coincided with other bad things, he may have lost his confidence with that platform. Once you lose your confidence on something it can really mess with your head and pushing it doesn't really help. I think it's a smart approach with just starting fresh with something new. Maybe in the future he goes back to the old bike and suddenly finds its working great. Sometimes it's worth just moving on.

I think a horst link design vs dual link could definitely help him out. Sometimes you just need to start with something fresh. I could see how Intense and Jeff were probably telling him to stick with it and keep trying with the m29. I've got to imagine as a brand, completely changing away from a suspension design you worked hard on is a tough pill to swallow for one's pride. I wouldn't be surprised if Aaron gave them an ultimatum that either they try something fresh or he needs to go somewhere else. Fingers crossed!

      @@dylan-5287 especially if things break like someone's leg (ie Anderson Silva). Gwin's ex team mate went privateer and made his own frame. There's not an infinite runway to race and as a person gets closer to 40 or beyond in any sport they need to think or have planned for retirement. You see this in F1 as well where the field has plenty of ex-Champions in crappier cars and not being on the podium anymore for seasons like Better or Alonso. Kimi retired. After a while, it's just a job and a paycheck. Max Verstappen is the defending Champion but he has no chance this year against Ferrari and he's got what he came here to get so he's content. Regardless, it's a good paying job. Hope Gwin got paid well for his contributions to Intense regardless of how it turns out in terms of results.

      @@airhogglider he's definitely getting paid well but I'm sure it's less these days. From an article two or maybe three years ago, gwin was making over a million a year. Absolutely insane compared to how little most racers are making. I think that was mostly redbull though. I think he'd like to get at least a few more podium results or gold before he considers retiring. He seems to still have that drive. But you've got guys like gee Atherton or Brandon fairclough who still get out and consistently race even knowing they're pretty unlikely to win. Just out there having fun at this point. Biggest thing is staying away from life changing injuries.

      Vpp/dual link is awesome for cross country or trail riders who want great pedal efficiency. But horst link for ultimate grip and ground tracking. For a dh bike I think this will really help him out.

      Nah, tires are one place where brand absolutely matters. Maxxis is on a different level, although schwalbe seems to be up there too. Just look at all the racers with other tire sponsors. In promo pics they have their sponsor brand. On race day their tires are blacked out with sharpie lol..

      The I shaped downtube and partially hidden shock looks a lot like Mulally's, I agree. Would like some detailed shots to compare side by side. I'm sure as friends and former teammates they've shared ideas which may coincide with their individual bike designs.
