Yeah, the only way to feel better about your life is to compare yourself with those worse off 100-300 years ago. Way to go, Hans! I don't think most people know think things are better than 100 years ago, but it certainly doesn't mean things are good now, or going to get better in the future.

When I first saw Hans Rosling at his first TED conference I was absolutely amazed. I only wished I had more teachers like him when I was at university.
Now at 52, I just can't miss one of is lectures here in YT.
Thank you very much Hans Rosling!!

Absolutely wonderful that you bought the program and published it. I was sad when it disappeared from SVT's free section... and therefore overjoyed when I just now found it here. Thank you Hans and thank you Gapminder for your incredible work in educating people and crushing myths with science, statistics and... culture. :D

Very good documentary. I recently discovered Hans' videos and I became a real fan of his work. And I have to say, that it is really interesting to see how long does it take to change people's perception ones they have a picture of something. If the data the people base their knowledge on is from 1950s and people still think that is the actual status, how long will it take for them to catch on what is now happening?

I always enjoyed Dr. Rosling's presentations and found his positivism compelling. However, numbers tell us many different stories. For example, Dr. Rosling's argument that the world poverty is decreasing, the issue is not on absolute numbers but on its distribution. Case in point, country X has GDP growth of $xxx but if the growth accrues only to 5% of its population the vicious cycle of poverty within a certain economic class persists. He also argued that HIV problem in Africa is not due to poverty [16:25], but he mentioned that "When you sell maize, you offer sexual favors to raise the price" and "sex is a bartering tool'. Aren't these symptoms of someone dealing with (relative) poverty who are more predisposed to this 'tool'? I am an advocate of the use of statistical data but I would caution its users to dig deeper and look beyond mere statistics alone as numbers can be interpreted in many different ways.
Rest In Peace Dr. Rosling! I will miss your intellectual curiosity and contribution to global development.

@@lepetitchat123 Pollyanna dealt in unjustifiable optimism.Hand Rosling dealt in facts and was optimistic based on them with good reason i think! He never denied there were very real problems but didnt think they were reason to disregard the good developments, good news and achievments that are also real..He said it was possible and necessary to hold several ideas in mind at the same time.He was way ahead of his time imho.

The HIV pandemic probably also has little to do with concurrency in the first place. Concurrency may be needed but it doesn't suffice for starting an epidemic given heterosexual transmission rates in Europeans or Asians:
Sawers, Stillwagon. Concurrent partnerships do not explain the HIV epidemics in Africa: a systematic review of the evidence. J Int AIDS Soc 2010;13:34.
Lurie, Rosenthal. Concurrent partnerships as a driver of the HIV epidemic in sub-Saharahn Africa? The evidence is limited. AIDS Behav 2010;14:17-24.

Of course the stats are true. That's not to say they're 100% accurate... but there are great difficulties in getting 100% accurate data for many of these measures. Study demography and you will find this out...
