There's an old game have similar gameplay like this called Freedom Fighters, it's about fictional/alternate world where the Soviets invade the US. It's quite good imo
I appreciate this game for featuring the Italians Finally someone remembered that WW2 Games isn't always about fighting Germans or the Japanese. I've never seen any other WW2 game that features the Other Axis Factions Also Interesting detail they put is how the Blackshirts speak in some Mainland Italian while the civilians speaks their native Sicilian dialects (according to my Italian Friends)
An underrated mission. I was really hoping they would've repeated the format of opening in an war for Mafia 3, would've been cool to have seen Vietnam. But alas, this suffices. It works really well with Vito's story, and really highlights the power of the mob. "He's a war hero!"
It is still my favorite mission from all Mafia series. Not because it takes place where it shows that mob takes place helping the Allies, but also show a part of the war that is very uncommon to show in the entertainment media. Meaning that 82nd airbone is very little represented in WW2 than the 101st. Because apparently Italy was a bloodbath for the Americans that it was in some ways a disaster in therms of warfare. The Vietnam mission in Mafia 3 is not there but, the models and characters are still there in the files and they are actually playable.

8:10-8:18 One minor mistake. Although General Patton was indeed involve in the Invasion of Sicily. The 504th PIR of the 82nd Airborne Division was not under Patton's command (Patton Commanded the 7th Army at the time was made of the 1st, 3rd and 45th Division). He should have said "Got the medal from General Ridgeway himself". But then again Most people won't knows who General Mathew Ridgeway was...
Cool detail, but honestly General Patton talked to him somewhere in the battle so I wouldn't be so sure. On the other hands, another mistake is the military uniform which the patches is from the 101st and Vito is part of the 82nd. Also another minor mistake is in Mafia 3 which is stated that Vito served in Italy during 1944 and 1945.
They originally were where they planned missions even one before he comes home. But if I had to guess they wondered why four or five missions were going to be set from Sicily to Battle of the Bulge which doesn't involve crime. Not adding that would've taken more time to make. But it would've been interesting though
Ever since I've played through this mission back when I bought the remastered I've been fascinated with it. For those who don't know, Mafia 2 is basically 1/4 of what it was supposed to be. Especially the WW2 content that it was supposed to be something like 40 minutes long on my guess due to the fact that it was revealed that the creator Daniel Vavra wrote about 89 pages just from this chapter on Sicily alone. It mentioned that he went to Sicily and spoke to war veterans, almost no other game did that amount of research to actually portray with that much accuracy. So Don Calo, 82nd airbone, Italians, 504th infantry, the uniforms, all look pretty accurate.

Was portrayed realistic here, the first waves of Sicily came through the night and morning on the beach assault. The next day followed the 82nd Airbone, which you can guess is where the 504th PIR is estabilished (Vito's unit) where the airbone forces actually suffered from some heavy AA. And it was the first time airbone troops were employed, being followed by the notorius Big Red One under General Patton's command, Dwight Eiseinhower as Americans and Montgomery and Harold Alexander as British. This campaign is actually the most underrated campaign of this war. Definetly the most interesting to look at back.

But in my knowledge, these are the only games that are possible to have featured Italian troops. Also explains his combat ability as Vito would've been made 4 combat jumps and participated in around 6 different campaigns if you follow the 504th's history. They are know as "Devils in Baggy Pants'.

Would've had 4 Mustard stains on his jump wings which is a very astonished accomplishment in the Airborne community. Most of the 504th PIR didnt jump into Normandy. He likley got wounded during the Battle of the Bulge as "Home Sweet Home" takes place in February 1945.
Well, it is true. But the devs seems to forget this detail over time. In Mafia 2's dlc they put Vito wearing a uniform with 101st patch. In Mafia 3's Vito records it is stated that he fought in Italy somewhere between 1944 and 1945. So I guess there is a lot of innacuracies over here, pretty sure because the devs didn't knew anything about history of WW2 units and divisions.

After BoB, the 101st became the premiere Airborne unit to the public with people forgetting that the 82nd AB was America's first combat Airborne unit and made more jumps than the 101st ever did. Either way it's very likley to be cannon to think Vito did participate in 4 combat jumps and faught in Sicily, Italy, and Europe from 1943 - 1944.

The fact that BOB is famous makes people more familiar with the uniform instead of the traditional 82nd logo. Therefore making the service of 82nd airbone less meaningful and barely recognizing their service in WW2. Also in another comment of this exactly video, I said that due to time restraints the 89 pages wrote to this chapter alone got almost entirely cut from it. Making it very hard to understand what happened during his time in service. Sure we won't get to see all the time in prision Vito spends, but we do get to see at least more than 5 minutes of it and there is a whole plot builded around the Prison section. But yeah Daniel Vavra said the chapter was supposed to pay homage to the origins of the Mafia segment and the whole people who were born in Italy and also paying respect to those who served. They even got the 1st infantry division in this mission at the end of it when they appear in the cutscene. So you can see they were gonna go with a lot of units in Sicily with a whole historically segment. Shame it got cut. Also Vito would never be in Italy if his unit was stated in occupied france after D-day.

It was cut because Daniel Vavra left the project. And due to time restraints the game wasn't finished the way it was supposed to be. The fact it doesn't have anything to do with Mafia is actually a lie, the Mafia here is pretty much the OG one. Is pretty easy to miss but, almost everyone in this mission helping the allies are the Sicilian mob, who actually are the originate ones from La Casa Nostra. So if you compared this Mafia to the one represented in Empire Bay they are the baby ones. This mission actually featured the main head of La Casa Nostra in Sicily.

I was pretty sure that's when Vito got wounded as "Home Sweet Home" is set in Febuary 1945 and he spent some time in the hospital. Probably got wounded in Dec 1944

Around that time his unit was at the Battle of the Bulge, clarifying it more, the wounds would be barely treated at that battle and most of the soldiers freezed to death so I guess he got show during somehow in a fox hole. But one thing that always stick with my head that at the first scene talking with Joe, Joe discharged Vito from military service. Which in my eyes, Vito didn't see very happy to it and if you pay attention to Vito's reaction he didn't wanted to leave his war friends back there fighting on their own without him. Like I know people like Joe, but there is a dialogue between Joe and Vito that always sticks in my head. Vito blamed Joe for his 2 years in service and 6 years in Prision which for me it seems that Vito's goal was whenever the one who attracts his eyes most when being influenced by other people. Out of the 3 Protagonists of Mafia franchise, Vito's motives are the least emotional one which makes his character being more dragged by others. The only time things was actually for him was when he killed his dad's assassins.
I remember playing that mission in a game store, the game store allow us to purchase game hours to play in any consoles. Everyone was asking me, “What WW2 game is that?” Lol.
What sucks is if they allowed the devs to fully flesh out the game, we would of got many more missions including the entire Sicily campaign, with even a WW2 open world segment....

I’m surprised that they skipped the detail that Scarletta’s unit, the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, the flak that he mentions they got hit with was from the Allied Fleet firing on the planes, thinking they were German bombers. The friendly fire aspect ads a lot of tragedy to the whole story, and is true to life. 200 or so paratroopers died that night from being shot out of the sky by their own damn ships. Also surprised that they didn’t put the iconic 82nd Airborne Division insignia on his shoulder, as the 504th was part of the 82nd

Can we appreciate Vito is badass? The dude shot several dozen Nazis, blew up a machine gunner, made a real hell in the city - and yet he is 18 years old at this moment and this is his first year in the war.

After BoB, the 101st became the premiere Airborne unit to the public with people forgetting that the 82nd AB was America's first combat Airborne unit and made more jumps than the 101st ever did. Either way it's very likley to be cannon to think Vito did participate in 4 combat jumps and faught in Sicily, Italy, and Europe from 1943 - 1944.

The fact that BOB is famous makes people more familiar with the uniform instead of the traditional 82nd logo. Therefore making the service of 82nd airbone less meaningful and barely recognizing their service in WW2.
Also in another comment of this exactly video, I said that due to time restraints the 89 pages wrote to this chapter alone got almost entirely cut from it. Making it very hard to understand what happened during his time in service.
Sure we won't get to see all the time in prision Vito spends, but we do get to see at least more than 5 minutes of it and there is a whole plot builded around the Prison section. But yeah Daniel Vavra said the chapter was supposed to pay homage to the origins of the Mafia segment and the whole people who were born in Italy and also paying respect to those who served.
They even got the 1st infantry division in this mission at the end of it when they appear in the cutscene. So you can see they were gonna go with a lot of units in Sicily with a whole historically segment. Shame it got cut.
Also Vito would never be in Italy if his unit was stated in occupied france after D-day.

It is history though, 101st did the jump on D-day and got more famous on it. The 82nd did several jumps throughout the whole WW2 and yet 101st is the biggest airbone division ever like what.
At one in the game's development it was supposed to be featured which Vito was sent home, He likely got wounded in the Bulge in c December 1944 or Jan 45.

The fact it doesn't have anything to do with Mafia is actually a lie, the Mafia here is pretty much the OG one. Is pretty easy to miss but, almost everyone in this mission helping the allies are the Sicilian mob, who actually are the originate ones from La Casa Nostra. So if you compared this Mafia to the one represented in Empire Bay they are the baby ones.
This mission actually featured the main head of La Casa Nostra in Sicily.

I was pretty sure that's when Vito got wounded as "Home Sweet Home" is set in Febuary 1945 and he spent some time in the hospital. Probably got wounded in Dec 1944

Maybe I don't know how military work that well back in the day. But I would expecting him to go back to the fight instead of going for a free license month back home.
@@aveteranplayer6403 I'm guessing Vito had a pretty severe wound and was recovering stateside. Asked for furlough to head home for awhile. If he was recovering in Europe, then he would have no chance of coming home for leave.

Lived for 70 plus years. Vito also had wounds sustained from that tank blast in mission 1 which definitely hit him
@@jamalwilburn228 I mean, assuming that a couple months can be two months. Around that time his unit was at the Battle of the Bulge, clarifying it more, the wounds would be barely treated at that battle and most of the soldiers freezed to death so I guess he got show during somehow in a fox hole.
But one thing that always stick with my head that at the first scene talking with Joe, Joe discharged Vito from military service. Which in my eyes, Vito didn't see very happy to it and if you pay attention to Vito's reaction he didn't wanted to leave his war friends back there fighting on their own without him.
Like I know people like Joe, but there is a dialogue between Joe and Vito that always sticks in my head. Vito blamed Joe for his 2 years in service and 6 years in Prision which for me it seems that Vito's goal was whenever the one who attracts his eyes most when being influenced by other people.
Out of the 3 Protagonists of Mafia franchise, Vito's motives are the least emotional one which makes his character being more dragged by others. The only time things was actually for him was when he killed his dad's assassins.

I’m surprised that they skipped the detail that Scarletta’s unit, the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, the flak that he mentions they got hit with was from the Allied Fleet firing on the planes, thinking they were German bombers. The friendly fire aspect ads a lot of tragedy to the whole story, and is true to life. 200 or so paratroopers died that night from being shot out of the sky by their own damn ships.

Well I'm playing right now this mission and I noticed that they did put the insignia, they just didn't put it on Vito. The Private can be seen with Private's stripes and Corporal with Corporal's stripes and the 82nd airbone insignia from one side being mirrored to the other.

that's because of the current western mythology of WW2 being a simplistic war of "evil germany wanting to take over the world and heroic britain and america saved the day". When the reality is alot more complex, especially when Britain actually tried to court Italy as an ally against Germany before war broke out.
And I actually just thought that Britain spent most of their war against Germany fighting against Italy, so that's also an embarrassing part of the story lol

Due to shortage of of solders , governments started sending prisoners to the war in the exchange of freedom . Vito was in the jail during WW2 started . So he was sent to the army to fight . It was common thing back than ..
