In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to the music of Nektar for the first time on the channel. This one comes to us from Guest DJ, Ray, who is one of the Daily Doug moderators. This is side 1 of a concept album. And, after listening to side one, I'm eager to complete the album! I hope you enjoy.

Had never heard of Nektar till the late 70's when I came across Tab In The Ocean (TITO) in a "used" record bin; and bought it based on the album cover alone. Being thrilled to come across Nektar by chance, I then purchased 4 more "used" Nektar albums (still have them), and became a huge fan!! Unlike the fame of Yes, Genesis, ELP, no one I know had ever heard of Nektar. Great stuff!! THANK YOU Doug for bringing them to light! Please do more Nektar!! With Peace and Love to all! (Michael)
Tab in the Ocean is amazing.
I agree, great band, english band mostly living and touring in Germany..
Great live band. Saw them at the infamous Roxy Theatre in Northampton Pa, I was 15 yrs old and we were within walking distance of seeing Fleetwood Mac, (Peter Green era), Styx, Billy Joel, Renaissance.Steeleye Span, among others as they were launching their careers.
Neiktar is such an underrated band. I really love this album and Down To Earth
Very underrated!
I also like DTE very much! With this and ATITO are my favourites. And only really good album from Nektar to me. Your thoughts on A tab?
Not so much "underrated", just "unknown". Those of us who know (are well familiar with the genre) would rate Nektar highly among the more well-known prog bands of the 70s (ELP Yes Genesis etc.). With Peace and Love to all! (Michael)
Remember the Future is the Pinnacle of Nektars work. They put on great live shows.
I saw them do this live. Solid sound and really tight band live. Great show. It sounded just like this live.
Yes! Love this album to death. The only other album that I listen to the most from this band is Recycled.
So many prog bands that gone under the radar. I was so fortunate to live in Houston and listened to KTRU Rice University radio station. Every night they would feature a LP, usually during the first part of the week they would have prog bands. The weekend I would go buy what I heard. Camel, Jade Warrior, Gentile Giant, Triumvirat, Steve Hillage, and Nektar were the lessor known bands I fell in love with
LYRICS *NEKTAR | REMEMBER THE FUTURE | 1974 | Part I*
_Having visited the planet many times before Bluebird had always found that people he met couldn’t accept him for what he was rather than how he looked with his blue skin and wings they either ran away from him or tried to harm him. He makes mental contact with a young blind boy and tells him stories of past and future in the form of visions and amongst these visions he places a picture of himself. The boy is not disturbed by the visions but confused by all that Bluebird tells him_
Take a trip back in time
Life evolving - growing higher
Not just space that bluebird sees
In the sea - a new domain
Evolution
Swimming forth - came on land
Beast to ape - grasping hands
Thinking kill - never ran
Lived in caves - enter man
Evolution
Tamed the fire - prophesied
Length of day and height of sky
Made his tools - chased his meal
Then progressed - he built the wheel
Falling down from heaven
Twisted leaves - so twisted
Still so strong after all those
L - I - E - S
I can see the meaning
Twisted Trees - so twisted
Spin the wheel of never ending
T - I - M - E
Blessed were the ways of the creatures in their caves
Who hold the last clue in the life of me and you
They had to fight to make good their rights
So Bluebird could not stir
Who - who made you - and who made me ?
Whose are the eyes of the world that look at me ?
Falling from their saddles
Victories - lost battles
Spin the wheel of never ending
L - I - F - E
Blessed were the ways of the sinners in their graves
Who saved the last place in the shade for me and you
Forty Thousand teeth were beared
As if to rip the flesh, already torn
Who - who made you and me ?
Whose were the eyes of the world
that looked at me ?
I was the first to see it all
When the rainbow
Crossed the bridge at dawn
Forty billion miles I came to tell this tale, already told
Who - who made you and who made me ?
Whose are the eyes of the world we’re
Looking through ?
Remember the future (x4)
Remember the first time
I came here the last time
Remember the future will always be there
But now that it’s over
I’ll see you the next time
Remember the future - is yours
Remember the future (x2)
And now that you’ve seen me
I see it’s behind you
Remember the future will always be there
And so I have told you
You'll see what’s before you
Remember the future - is Yours

Now we are talking! This is wonderful :)
Awesome reaction to one of my favorite albums! Thank you so much for appreciating the under appreciated, Doug! I think you’ll really enjoy side 2 if/when you can get to it.
This is my favorite Nektar album. But their first two are also really great! Journey To The Center Of The Eye, and A Tab In The Ocean - very different listens, both fine records. Down To Earth is pretty good too. Ron Howden just passed last year. The band is still touring. Thanks Doug
"Journey to the Center of the Eye" is a fabulous concept album. My favourite Nektar album by a long mile!
When this album came out the rock station in St. Louis (KSHE) played it constantly and Nektar became huge in the St. Louis area. When they came to St. Louis on this tour they sold out 5 shows. At the time they were 3rd or 4th on the bill virtually everywhere else in the U.S. I saw them in qn 11,000 auditorium in St. Louis back then. This has always been one of my favorite albums and is in my heavy rotation to this day.
Yes Kshe played this song all the time back in the 70's and early 80's. Nectar was huge in St Louis back then. Most bands played at Kiel auditorium.
@Ray
Great choice! This album is their masterpiece in my opinon.
Some other Nektar songs recommendations:
- Countenance
- Nelly the Elephant
- Cybernetic Consumption
I love Nektar. An old group.. I have all there albums
Their* ... There is somewhere that is not here
me too ... still listen to all their albums
Huge Nektar fan since 1975. Started with this album and saw them April 1975 in Berkeley California. Phenomenal show.
Was that the show that Pavlov's Dog opened for?
@@markpressler8439 Yes and I have pictures of both bands on stage I took with my Kodak Instamatic 35mm camera.
@@markpressler8439 I think this may be the first time I've seen Pavlov's Dog mentioned anywhere. I was a DJ at a small radio station in 75, and the access to the promos we got led me to a lot of music. Found Nektar there, via a copy of the album here, which is still pretty much my favorite by them. We also had Pampered Menial by Pavlov's Dog, along with the single "Julia". Personally, I love "Song Dance" from that album.
Seeing both bands at the same show would have been awesome. But, I was in southern Illinois. My first concert was just a bit before that, in Feb 75. And, we had to drive 3-4 hours to get to that one (Led Zeppelin, St. Louis, PG tour). Nothing was close.
Around 20-25 years ago, I was in St. Louis for work. As usual, I looked for a "collector" oriented CD shop, where I had a better chance of finding things like Nektar, etc. I did find a third Pavlov's Dog album I hadn't known existed. I was asking the clerk there about it, and he told me that David Surkamp (vocals, Pavlov's Dog) still lived in St. Louis and actually shopped in that very store. Said if I hung out, chances were, he might walk in. Which would have been extremely cool, but, I was with a coworker and couldn't really stay. Pretty cool, though, talking to the clerk about it.
The 3:40 "Falling down..." lead in and the entire portion of "Wheel of Time" section that follows is so beautifully done.
I'm so glad you seem to enjoy this music that fans of the band have loved for so many years. You seem to really enjoy the drumming, which is so special because Nektar's beloved drummer Ron Howden just passed. Of all the band members you're hearing here, only one remains, bassist Mo Moore. The band, under Mo's supervision is recording a new album as I type. I hope you give it a listen.
You realize now you have to do part 2!!!
Please on the public channel!
That's how we get him.
part 2 is as great as part 1 ... this is a classic album
Belo album
One of my all-time favorites. Waiting for part two „I cann see you, I can hear you!"
Nektar's "Recycled" -- another concept album -- is one of my four or five all-time favorite albums... this one's great too.
"Timeless" album, one of my all-time favourites! I saw them twice back in 2007 playing 'Remember the future', still with original members Roye Albrighton and Ron Howden who both sadly passed a couple of years ago.
Great album. Listened to it a lot in high school.
Loved this album when I dug it out of the college radio library I DJd at in thd late '70's, played it a number of times on my late Friday night or Saturday night shows..
Thanx so much, Thanx so much, Thanx so much Doug for this great reaction and analysis of Remember The Future by Nektar. I am very glad you really liked this side of Nektar. I have been listening to Nektar since the mid 70's. I finally got to see them live on Cruise To The Edge in 2016 twice. Fabulous shows. I also got to meet and have a couple of drinks with them one night of the cruise for an hour plus. Nektar was very underappreciated. Roye Albrighton was a pioneering guitarist in the vein of Allan Holdsworth. Sadly both of these amazing guitarists have now passed away. Also Ron Howden, the drummer has also passed away recently.
There is a lot of great material to choose from with Nektar. They were touring last year and I believe they will be going out again later this year.
I’ve been waiting for years for you to get to this! So happy it’s not restricted. What a trip back!
Very underappreciated band. I saw them in Detroit, Michigan Theatre, mid seventies. Great show and the amazing light show that complemented the music. When the band introduced the light show operator as a member of the Band, nice touch.
I was there, too! I worked @ the Michigan Palace. Awesome show! A standout in my memory.
At that time, they had the most technologically advanced lightshow in the world.
Well... Nektar - Recycled (1975) together with Larry Fast (Synergy) is the absolute best i think. A real masterpiece.
Totally Agree! A Masterpiece! 👍
I'll never get why people like Rec so much. I even like their debut better overall, but still ATITO, RTF and DTE are their best to my ears!
i htink it has to do with what music background we come from...
@@andrejz8954
This is one of those random gems that Spotify recommended to me a few years ago. Was just on it the background and I realised it was a banger!
Excellent album, looking forward to this!
To clarify: this is the original mix, which is the mix I wanted. I think the original mix is superior to the new remix.
youtube says this is a 2023 remix.
@@dannylgriffin TH-cam is wrong.
Finally :). One of my favorite bands. Favorite album ...Sounds like This and the piece 1-2-3-4
I've been wondering when someone would react to this great album.
Well, this is a surprise! Nektar are a largely forgotten top-tier prog band, and this is probably their best work.
Excited to see your reaction. I remember when I finally found this record in a second hand shop in Cumbria, after searching around different record shop. It was a great purchase and the album gets played often ☺️
I first heard them on Jim Newstead’s channel and I immediately loved them.
I’m sure you will like them too.
You certainly did Will!
I went to see this band in 1974, never having heard them before. I was blown away by their music and their incredible light show (one of the best I have ever seen). The next day, I bought the album.
Recycled side 1 is absolutely phenomenal and plays like one song ala Close To The Edge.
This album helped me get through high school, love it!
Ahhh.. Nektar one of my favorite youth bands..
Nektar is such a great band. I read about them a few years ago in a book about the history of my hometown and then listened to "A Tab In The Ocean". Being a fan since that time.
I 1st heard this in '74 & ran right out and bought the album. I remember feeling so many emotions, especially when it gets to Remember the Future portion.
A masterpiece that has always held a space in my heart.
Thankyou for the backstory about the alien. And thx to my pal Josh White for turning me on to your review.
This stuff rocks, love the bass riffs too ... Glad you are reviewing this - new playlist stuff for me, the prog metal guy. LOL - Also, "Quicksilver" is a great proggy 70's band.
You need some Camel! Their first four albums are awesome.
Yes they are! Fast downhill from there tho imo
I love the drum track. Oh... man, the choruses have such a great pay off! A lot of beautiful guitar tones that are unreal for the day. Wow, thanks Guest DJ, Ray!
Thank you!
I got the recycle album, and love it. Thank you Iron Maiden for bringing, King of twilight, as a b side
Never heard of this band and commenting before watching. That being said, looking forward to a new discovery and with the wisdom of your ear Doug.
Exactly!
@@Aeroswine1776 After listening to this with Doug, I totally enjoyed it. Being a huge Dead, CSN, and bands of that sort, this fits right in my wheelhouse of bands I enjoy.
Please give a listen to "A Tab In The Ocean" next. You will not be disappointed.
@@edvadojunk Totally will. Thx for the info
@@mmiller6873Journey to the Centre of the Eye, A Tab in the Ocean, Remember the Future, Down to Earth, and Recycled are all well worth hearing.
I've been playing the band's albums at the Music Club over at the Daily Doug Discord.
great album
Thank you! Such an underrated band! I saw them in concert a year ago performing this album in it’s entirety!
I absolutley love Nektar❤👍
Hallo Doug , I like Nektar i have Remember thr Future as a Vinyl Album at Home. And-
i heard the Band live 1981 in Marburg ( Germany ) . the Album Recycled was new in this time.
Its intressting io hear too.
Greetings from Germany ( Deutschland )
Dietmar
Nektar were very popular in Germany in the mid-seventies. RTF was a must to have at that time.
If it was 1981, wouldn't Man in the Moon have been the recent album?
Hey Doug, I stumbled across Nektar a few years ago, Journey to the Center of the Eye, and was captivated by that album. A bit more spacey, and jammy than this one, but really caught my ear. I have the cd of this album, Remember the Future, and on a separate disc is a live performance of the whole album, straight through. I know on a Patreon, you have heard a bit of A Tab in the Ocean, you should check out the full album side title track, and you should also look into their album Recycled, another full concept album… Can’t wait for Side 2 of this one!! ✌️
Epic album!
I remember listening to this album back in the fall of 1977, when I was introduced to Nektar by a guy a couple of doors down in my dorm. He was from the hometown of Nektar, or maybe some of the members, that being Summit, N.J.. Crispy would play his Nektar albums all the time, and I grew to like them quite a bit. But I hadn't heard them much since, so I was happy to see your thumbnail today, and clicked on it right away. Thank You Doug, and your alert "monitor".
Oops, "Moderator", not "Monitor". My bad.
@@bobschenkel7921 Welcome.
I saw Nektar back in 4/2022, they were quite good, and did include this whole album.
that mix sounds great
Nektar is still around, but Mo Moore is the only surviving original member (Mick Brockett is still around too). Roye is one of the great under-rated guitar players.
I love your dancing, Doug! 😂 The song was certainly interesting--it made me want to keep listening. I enjoyed the funk and the changes. It went from funk to slightly 'proggy'...to VERY prog! It sounds a bit like MGMT's grandpa. I bet someone out there knows what I mean. Dug the Doug shaker too, BTW. 😉 Fun stuff!
Nektar was a great band, listened to them a lot back in the 70's. Deserved to be better known, for sure. Hope you listen to part 2 sometime soon, It's pretty cool!
Other bands from the period worth knowing are Uriah Heep, Santana, Premiata Forneria Marconi, King Crimson...
I saw them back in Buffalo when this came out. Never heard of them before but blown away with their sound and show!
"I was the first to see it all, when rainbow crossed the bridge at dawn", ranks right up there with "On the hill we viewed the silence of the valley, Called to witness cycles only of the past And we reach all this with movements in between the said remark" in terms of meaning and impact.
I lump Nektar with bands like Camel, Caravan and the Strawbs who lasted for years changing their sound at times but are still kicking around somewhat, yet in the heydays of the 70’s were fringe players. That doesn’t mean they were not as good as the main Prog bands, they just maybe had one or two things keeping them from reaching the mountain top. Personally, I love these guys and their unique sound. Saw them in Trenton New Jersey at a prog festival and they killed it! One of a kind band live!!!
@RayRay
Pleasantly surprised to see Nektar considered in this forum. Right with you on Caravan, Strawbs. I posted a comment referencing the time I saw Nektar as a 14-15 yr old at a local converted movie theatre The Roxy, in eastern Pa. That stable of English Progressive/Folk bands, Lindisfarne, Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span,,Strawbs etc…they all played shows within walking distance of where I grew up.
@@Crazymiddleeights I hope you were able to see ALL those incredible bands.
Nice pick Ray! Nektar is incredibly underrated!
I love them.
YES. I LOVE THIS BAND! they are coming out with a new album soon and I am SO EXCITED. You should absolutely check out Recycled after this album (it’s the same format but a built crazier and closer to Yes). One of my favorite albums every and easily one of the coolest covers
I actually played Side 1 of Recycled for Doug once.
You are selecting the outstanding stuff. I discovered Nektar about 3-4 years ago. Remember the Future is outstanding. Great choice!
I was 16 when this album came out, and have very fond memories 😊. It was also “Album of the Year” (it had a sticker on it proclaiming that), but I don’t recall if it was the year it was released or later.
I forgot I had this album in my record collection, Great to here it again after so many years, I think I bought it around 1975
I am so happy you're doing this one. This is such a fantastic album.
An extraordinary band! Have fun Doug! 🖖
Great to see you experience a little bit of Nektar, a huge influence on the late Ian Curtis from Joy Division R.i.p. you've got to check out their '....Sound Like This' album particularly Odyssee: Rons on/Never, Never, Never / Da Da Dum, hope you enjoy the rabbit hole
My first show, September 1974 at the Tower Theater. I still have the vinyl.
Have you checked out Crack The Sky? Another less known prog band, they're from USA. My favorite album is Safety In Numbers, recommend the song "Nuclear Apathy"
@Lsqrd1960
Loved Crack the Sky. Also saw them perform at the Roxy Theatre in Northampton Pa. Safety in Numbers a favorite. Love Ice from first record. Great band….
outstanding
Good call. We listened to this band back in the day.
About time. I was going to email you about this. This may be my favorite album of all time, on par with CTTE. I tend to like part 2 better, but this is a great start!!!!!
Nektar is a great band. You picked a good selection. I discovered them in 1978. The music and vocals are great. You should listen to THRU THE EARS AND RECYCLED. PROG MUSIC AT ITS BEST
wow, was flicking through your videos enjoying some led zeppelin reactions and stuff, and my god i did not expect to see this! Hardley ever see anyone talk about Nektar, serisouly one of my faves of all time!
Excellent!! may be you can now continue with another underrated prog band like Eloy
I haven't heard Nectar since the 70's.
YAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY!
Awesome reaction! Love Nektar and this album! I’d love to hear Todd Rundgren’s Utopia “The Ikon”, it’s an epic 30-minute long epic complete with wild solos and time signature changes. It’s fantastic, I 100% recommend reacting to it!
First bought this album in the 70s. Definitely an under-rated band, maybe as you said with all the competition with other bands in the UK. HOWEVER, they did find success in Germany and were greatly appreciated there.
First year university in the mid-70s, I was exposed to so much new music all at once. Nektar is one of the bands I didn't follow up on for some reason (so were Ekseption and Atomic Rooster).
Better late than never, I guess. This is really cool. Bits remind me of early Yes; other bits are very Hawkwind-like. (Umm, Progwind maybe?)
19:00 The way Doug nails the change at 19:12, in a song he's never heard. I love when that happens; so satisfying!
If you really want to hear them explore the space rock genre, Journey to the Centre of the Eye is for you.
Another Hawkwind connection: Robert Calvert plays the ringmaster on the band's fifth album, Down to Earth.
Thanks, Doug for your inclusion of this masterpiece, which I have known since 1973.
It should have been titled: : "How Many Musical Ideas Can You Cram Into 35 Minutes" ???
Ah. Those "funky meters..." As near as I can tell, alternatinge 11s and 13s.
Jade Warrior is another good 70's prog band.
They are English, but the band was founded in Hamburg - Germany.
I saw them supporting Zappa at Wembley in 1973. They were great and I was hooked. Saw them many times after the Wembley gig. For me, they were a better live band than a studio one. Groovy psychedelic light show too.
Good review. I bought this record on vinyl, and thought this was a German band, but learned later they were all english guys.
Part II is even better.
Long time since I've been listening to the album, but I think I'd prolly agree with ya on that!
Wow, I haven't heard this since college
Great band, Down To Earth is my favorite Nektar album,I bought it for $0.99 back in 1980 out of a cutout bin. Funny thing is for years I thought the name of the album was 14 down to earth, a quick look at the cover and you'll know why.😂
Love Nektar!
I like this one. I don't know their discography too well, but this is one of those great progressive 70's albums that were and are a bit overlooked. Maybe a bit too spacey for mainstream taste. There's plenty more of those. Recommendation: "From Books And Dreams" by German band Message. Very similar vibe, similarly strange concept.
doug we need part 2!!
Another under appreciated band from this period in time was called Flash and they sounded a lot like YES, probably because two former members of the original lineup of YES, Peter Banks and Tony Kaye founded the band.
Apparently Tony Kaye was really just a guest on that first album.
Nektar had many great albums Doug.... If you want some bands here you go..... Diabolus, Fruup, Ethos, England, Druid, Mithrandir, Czar, Gong (You), Raw Material, Cressida, Hannibal, Marsupilami, Gracious, Armageddon, Captain Beyond, Hawkwind, Arcadium, Älgarnas Trädgård, Nucleus, Jericho, Dyzan, Crusis, Far East Family Band, Gravy Train, Banco, Le Orme, PFM, Il Rovescio Della Medaglia, Indian Summer, Jade Warrior, Jose Cid, Lift (US), Frank Marino, Neil Merryweather, Phoenix (Cantofabule), Solid Ground, Spirit, Stray Dog, and many many more.....
id really really recommend the whole album Journey to the Center of the Eye, its a continuous piece throughout the whole album and is a personal favorite!
That's another good one.
Love this band, real prog rock.
Ahhh! I thought me and maybe 5 other people knew about them. Down to Earth is my favorite.
This album got me into prog, by the way first song I ever listened to from them was crying in the dark/king of twilight on a mixtape from fenriz of darkthrone back in the myspace days...
Doug has reacted to that medley on his Patreon.
Speaking of bands that never quite got through, there’s a French band called Pulsar who released an album called Halloween in 1977. Apparently the album was very well received at the time, but due to mismanagement, they just never got much attention for it. In my opinion, it’s the most beautiful piece of music I’ve ever heard. It’s 1 song split into 2 parts like Remember the Future, and also a concept album, but it’s a lot more depressing and a lot symphonic in how it’s arranged.
