This concerns mostly electronic music. If you go to say, bandcamp, you'll find hundreds of unknown artists selling their own tapes. Nowadays, with tapes, things can go many ways: there are some artists home-recording (and selling) the tapes with their music, there are those who record them themselves and get labels only to distribute them, finally there are cassette foundries that will, just like in the 1980s, take order to produce a run of tapes professionally. I know what I'm saying cause I myself had my album released on tape, In summary, I would say there is far more underground music, and *unfortuntaely* it is harder to find it because of all the "static", i.e. it is far *more* accessible.
