G'day from Australia Ian.! firstly congrats on the award, well deserved.! I much prefer your mates taillights, and where they were. Only thing would set them off would be a little bit of chrome around them. Hopefully Victor sees the light, "The taillight" !!, and gets you to put them back to how they were, with some skinny chrome around them.

I had one of those
Put the tail lights underneath the bumper and have them shine down on the roll pan. If you need to you can add some of the silver underneath the bumper to reflect the lights.
Another thought is to make a gap between the trunk lid and the body and put the tail lights in the gap.

I want to suggest putting the tail lights in the bumper.
13s to the concrete do it wit the fluid
If you could of put on the new tail lights on then put the bumper over the lights
Put 65 impala taillights
Make the back window the Tail lights! Clear when not used & Red when on!
