I build a hut out of dead standing trees found on my 40 acre property. I thin out the forest to increase the health of all the trees, and make use of the material to build a really cool small hut out of a refurbished satellite dish. I use a bit of re-used tarp to cover the top of the small shelter.

This forest was planted nearly 40 years ago, and no trees were removed, so it's far too overgrown to be healthy. The best thing to do is remove half the trees and allow sunlight to help the forest recover and allow new trees to seed themselves.
The forest was originally designed to be planted quickly, but then harvested, just nothing happened.
I cut a bunch of trees to build the log cabin by stacking them vertically and make a rounded miniature, tiny house. I will include many features in this inside of this primitive structure like a wood burning stove, sleep space, and a wood floor.

This is a good book. Does provide a step by step introduction to how to build things th-cam.com/users/postUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 , also does offer some steps. Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.
Coming from a logging background. we were hired a lot of the times to do a "select" cut in which the forest service would come in and mark trees to be cut. Why? well because some blocks were dying because the area was way to thick and needed to be thinned. I understand exactly what you are doing. Now 30 years later i admire people doing what you are doing and doing it on your own. Great video!
It makes sense for all sorts of reasons, safety since they might fall on someone financially they are not worth a lot due to size but if you remove the neighbours then they can grow and be worth more. By cutting the light will get to the undergrowth and encourage plants and animals to grow.
Funny. The time I ever see an abundance of wildlife are in natural uncharted forests. The replanted forests planted to reclaim old farm land won't last as if it would being natural. They die faster. Farm land is toxic to other species due to pesticides and consentrated herbicides left in the soil. Seen this in all the reclaimed forests here. You can't rebuild what God already had made, basically. And only adding one species when there are many that coexist, it will be impossible to reclaim land without knowing what grows with what.
@@mackenzielamb6513 It is not because the land is toxic otherwise there would be no trees. The reason that you do not see wildlife is due to lazyness. These single species forests are grown to be harvested. After say 20 years they are supposed to be thinned every other tree removed. Due to the difficulty of removing every other tree they get hung up when cut down and have to be dragged out between other trees. There is little money in it.
This means that tree growth stops little light gets to the forest floor and the forest becomes stagnant. Ironically if it were done the remaining trees would grow and become worth a lot of money but this growth would take another 20 to 40 years and the owners of these forests don't want to wait for such a payoff. Instead they just do not bother.
@@glennedwards1449 the issue with this is money. We strive for it and sometimes leads us to a dead end. We gut these forests, take more than we wanted, like here in Wisconsin, try to replace what they took and on top make a profit out of it and failed. Only growth was for the tree growth to benefit profit nothing else. That's how it usually ends. I backpack and hike a lot. There is a place in northern Wisconsin where an F5 hit and left a 40 mile path through naturel Land over the Menomonie reservation and back through the National Forest boundary. In the middle of the path you can see the difference in growth between state restored land and natural. Night and day really. Walk through the uncharted forests and you'll see the abundance of species of trees and foliage. The trees fall on their own, provide food for future trees by decomposition. How it's always been and it's good. Also farm land is bad for the land. The entire bottom half of Wisconsin is court ordered to get the water tested in all water supply, public and commercial, for contaminants leading to cancer and other health issues from farm run off from the fertilizers used. Phosphorus and nitrate mainly. In the past 2 years I believe globally we've doubled out fertilizer use to over 4 million tons. Locally in our towns nature reserve is a corn field and it's run off drainage pipe leads right to the stream of the reserve. Pointless to call it a reserve I'd say. I've photoed certain species of plants dying from this run off and the black, oily film on the surface of the water run off at the bottom of the hill and trails into the stream. Also the corn this year stinks bad. Like they mixed a little cattle urine with it.

The projects at the end of the book are valuable for enhancing your skills and creating your own furniture. A digital platform linked to the book that could offer the plans for other woodworking projects with the cut sheets would have been a nice addition, but overall, the book is excellent.
I wanted to make small round rooms like that, about 7 of them joined by tunnels; each one would be a different room of the house.
That sounds interesting. Problem with tunnels, and even above ground structures, can be radon gas coming up from the soil/rocks. It turns out that even if it tests fine, it can become a problem down the line. You need to test every 2 years minimum, from what I read. In any case, building a cabin or house is something I wish I could do!

@@papafrank8900 well technically you could make this with a stone axe, a good knife and some sort of larger game hunting weapon. It wouldn't be as pretty but if you used mud instead of decaying pine needles it would be better insulated, you can make nails from bones if you really wanted to and it doesn't have to be perfectly leveled like he did it. He doesn't show you those skills but he does show you the steps to put the materials together. Kind of like a kid with no hands putting a Lego set together, a few pieces might be misplaced but if they have the drive to do it they still have their feet and teeth to do it with.

The difficult part comes in the form of Land Ownership..
If you dinae own the land, you canae really build a house.
Government just doesn't let your live anywhere and trespassing gets ya shot.
If you had tons of that extra plastic, you could wrap it around the outside for extra insulation/weather proofing & put some on the ground underneath the floor. Also build log frame connected the cabin & wrap it in tarp to make a enclosed tarp storage room/porch.
I’m always amazed at what you can accomplish in any of your builds. Using so many recycled materials and getting the results you get…pretty impressive. I gotta check in on both yours and Zach’s houseboats to see what they’re becoming. Great channel, always fun here. 👏👍✌️

That was an awesome build, thank you for sharing. Also it is not recommended to sleep all night long with your electric blanket on, you could easily over heat. Instead they suggest you turn it on awhile before you go to bed then turn it off before you go to sleep.

I helped my grandpa clear a property in the mountains for a home he built for my grandma. I learned all the stages of pine needle decomposition. Pine needles get THICK on the forest floor. Love your videos!

Love it! Reminds me of a yurt. Love the walls, too. Good job. I have 2 Eco Flows, but not the BIG one like you have. Last winter I used the smaller Ecoflow in my bedroom to run my electric mattress pad and it did just fine. Then I recharged them during the days with my solar panels.

I have 16.9 acres, mostly wooded, with lots of downed trees due to a tornado which came through 4/30/19 which need to be removed. House is 784 square foot aframe. Love the house, don't love lack of storage and walls at 60 degree slant (hanging pictures???)

My cousin made a frame similarly, and then just stuck sticks of willow, which grew where they were, in the ground around it - the willow roots on its own and made for a live hut.

This is a lovely little cabin. Quick, simple useful.
This is the first time i have ever seen a fully round design and it is awesome. I love anything that makes use of scrap and outside the box thought. Reduce reuse repurpose recycle! You blow this out of the water with that waterproof but completely light permeable roofing tarp. It prob also gives you a tiny camouflage effect in the snow. Like a conservatory! I could easily see this recreated as a she-shed or winter greenhouse even in your yard.
I always dream of having that early seed starter space for the shorter growing season zones or that extra shelves to overwinter the lettuce and green onions garlic and radish. You could even rig up a grow light so easily. Now i am jealous to the bone. Anyway, this was fun. Have a nice day!
🧄🧄🧄🧄Garlic requires no protection from the weather. You plant each clove a thump deep and a handspan apart, around the first frost, and as long as the ground is not frozen yet. Then let it be, it knows what to do. For a northern climate you want the garlic with that hard stem in the middle. The other kinds are for milder climates.
🧄🧄🧄🧄Then the next warm season make sure to harvest all the garlic scapes, a vegetable in themselves, that is the stem and flower bulp. Sold in oriental grocery stores. Taste just like garlic. Removing the said garlic scapes promotes root bulp development, which is what you want.

Not sure why I am watching this but we’ll down because it’s informative and entertaining.
Yep, that stand should have been thinned before the trees got so tall. Though it looks like some thinning is going on from bark beetles. It could still be a nice stand. Most trees roots go out only as far as the branches. If you thin them too far apart too fast they won't have the root structure yet to keep them from getting blown over if you have strong winds there. Shading the forest floor doesn't hurt anything, it keeps the brush down and lessens the fire danger. Sweet cabin.
