I have this unit. As you mentioned , the green dot is basically useless. So being able to adjust the base without any way to accurately calibrate does not help much. Also, the handle will fall off if extended too far, which happened to me the very first time I used it. Nice tip on the additional plate as now I can use it with cage for my camera! Otherwise the orientation of the cmaera would be off by 90 degrees.

That's the anchor links from Peak Design. It's used to hook in either a wrist strap or neck strap.
What is the name of that tripod base you are using please, I can see that it is 'Neewer' but what is it called?
It's a Neewer mini tabletop tripod. I got it from Amazon last 2019, but I don't think they're still selling this specific one anymore.

Try the Leofoto MT-02. It costs more, but you can lock the legs to different heights.
