Meg is so underrated. It's easy to talk shit about her drumming, but if you watch a live show of theirs, the two are so in sync and her sense of improvisation is incredible. Such a valuable band member.
No no no. She is hot garbage. I will not let her shitty drumming be confused with “raw” or some bs term. Her tempo and lack of independence is so bad that it pulls me out of songs. I’m not a guy who requires all songs to have perfect tempo and be in complex time signatures with tons of flash. I’m aware that quantization and DAW’s killed rock. I know that some slack and feel is what makes rock, rock. But you still have to have some competence on the drum set. She lacked any form of dynamic control and ability to flow with Jack’s vocals and guitars. There are 8 million other drummers that could have played with a heavier less technically focused style that would complement Jack’s vocals and guitar better. Trying to listen to Ball and Biscuit is genuinely painful. Listening to her rush and drag every other measure on a blues riff makes me want to ram my head into a wall. She sucks.
Yep! Exactly. It's the same way many Beatles fans (and the band) felt toward Ringo Starr. Was he the best drummer? Of course not. But he was definitely the best Beatle.

1:05 That was a genius choice to use that song as your example for that. Not only did each element come in within a perfect time frame of each other for the pacing of the video, but Jack White singing "It's quite possible that I'm your _third_ man" capped it off quite nicely.
As long as her drumming is good, why give her slack for it? I really love the chemistry between the two. I love how much this song took off and how it’s a song that doesn’t have to be complicated to be intimidating and powerful.
her drumming being bad is what makes the song sound 'alternative' or 'real'. Every time music gets too polished and manufactured sounding like glam rock, people playing badly with originality, like the punk movement, become popular.
The reason people were giving slack for it wasn't because the music was bad it was because she was going about it all wrong. First of all she was right handed and was trying to play the set like a righty. Second of all she holding sticks with clenched fists which not only will kill the palm of your hand it will also make the drum sound terrible because her clenched fist s prevents her from getting the proper rebound out of the drums. Also when she hits the drums she tends to use her whole arm to do it, which not only terrible for endurance but also terrible for power, articulation and rhythmic precision. When your hitting the drum all the power comes from the wrist, the arms are just the guides. Another thing to note is that when she grips her sticks she always grips it by the bottoms, near the butts of the sticks. You are never supposed to do that because its a fantastic way for you loose your sticks while your playing. Yet despite all that she managed to pull it all off and with a bit of guidance and maybe a couple drum lessons I could see her growing into an incredibly talented drummer.
Yeah some times simple is all you need. I'm not the best drummer but I'm alright, pretty confident I could play this song. I'm a female drummer & in a band w/my guitarist for many yrs. The White Stripes have made me feel like itz ok to be a 2 piece band.
“Giving someone some slack” is another way of saying you’re taking it easy on them. The exact opposite of how you’re using it. You’re thinking of “giving someone some flak”. But I’m not going to give you flak about it. I’ll cut you some slack.
I always loved the White Stripes' asthetic and simplicity. Every aspect of the band was on point, and you nailed it with this video. I just wish I got to see them live when they were still together. Their Under Great White Northern Lights tour seemed very special. I'm gonna try and see Jack when he comes to town later this year!
He is amazing live. Hes done a couple pop up things in nashville that are really cool. He even did a episode with Anthony bourdain in nashville that was pretty damn cool that showcased a side project of his.
Lars again isnt the greatest drummer of all time but his style and skill (regardless of level) compliments metallica nicely which is why they got so big. Bands rarely if at all make it to the big leagues off the back of one member each one has to bring something to the table. RHCP for example, Flea on Bass one of the best bassists of all time arguably but wouldn't probably have gone as a far without the super star talent that makes up the rest of the band.
It's not about are they they best drummer. It's about are they the best drummer for what they're trying to achieve. Lars Ulrich and Meg White fit that role perfectly.
When people say she's a bad drummer, they don't mean that she can't do complex beats or can't hit fast. When people say she's a bad drummer it's because she can't keep time, she can't maintain a steady beat.
No, it's not. To call her a bad drummer is to state a fact. I'm sure both her and Jack are aware she is a bad drummer. I'm pretty sure she doesn't want to be or try to be a great drummer. Now, the fact that I see she is a bad drummer doesn't mean that I can't appreciate their music or that I want her replaced with a better drummer. Absolutely not. They are perfect the way they are. But she is a bad drummer. Also, I assume that this meme comes from fuck ups on live shows, but if you genuinely think that Lars is a bad drummer, there is something seriously wrong with your ears.
The white stripes wouldn't sound the same without meg. I'm sure thats why she's in the band. Jack wouldn't have jamed with her if she wasn't a kick ass drummer.
She is not a kick ass drummer, she plays what the band needs and nothing more. That's not to say she's bad or makes the band worse; she isn't good, but the band wouldn't sound good with a better drummer.
Trivia: It became the "Po po po po" song when Roma's Captain and Italy's player Francesco Totti, invited to Sanremo Festival (that was hosted by his wife), was asked to sing his favorite song. He didn't know the lyrics, so he just sang the main riff.
I was watching a british person react to american sports fans and when they did this chant he said "i didnt know americans knew this chant" and thats when i really realized how much of a phenomenon this song had become. crazy. @but why it's basically the same language, plus I'm often in Vlaanderen so I know how it's pronounced. What the fuck do you know? You can't even spell Flemish* correctly.
@GREEN GHOST She plays very similarly to Lars Ulrich, the only difference is that Metallica is a band that needs a better drummer. She plays in a way that could cause severe muscle and bone damage, but she doesn't play enough notes for that to be a legitimate concern. If Carter Beauford played with his wrists constantly stressed like she does he would have been forced into retirement by arthritis years ago, she doesn't play with the speed, velocity, or aggression that he plays with, so she likely won't have that problem. She's not good, but she doesn't need to be, because white stripes doesn't need a good drummer. There are so many amazing women drumming out there, she just isn't one of them, same as there being amazing men drumming and Lars not being one of them.
@GREEN GHOST "You don't know her personally... you don't even know what kind of drummer she really is" 😂 Are you trolling? We have ears we don't need to know her life story If anyone is judging her based on the fact that she's a girl it is you. Everyone else here actually comments on the music.

I love Megs drumming. Basic doesn't mean bad. Complexity doesn't always make things better. Her style is straightforward and that's exactly the sound they were going for. Just simple, old fashioned rock. No protools and a bunch of technical stuff. They had that garage band vibe which i love and the simplicity is a huge and fun inspiration to me and many others. It's like going to someones house and watching a couple people fuck around and just have fun.. and they brought that feel to their albums and the stage.

This video is the most accurate report on how the song became a stadium anthem. Moreover, it became the most sang song for AS Roma fans that year, who also made a stadium choreography with its musical notes. It was then AS Roma fans to bring it to 2006 World Cup and let it be the anthem for the Italian National team.
Actually during the celebration in Rome, Marco Materazzi took the mike ans sang: "Siamo i campioni del mondo" on those notes ;-) Rome said, hey we like it and we know how t properly sing it, so they turned it into a chant.
Here in Brazil, is pretty common to sing repeatedly "eu não vou embora" with the chords of Seven Nation Army. Translated, it means "I'm not going to leave", people sing this usually at the end of a game, a show or just something that is too good to end (considering that soccer is a big thing here, these chords being so known is not a surprise)

'Meg White Can't play drums.' 'Ringo Starr can't play drums.' Q1: Are you a drummer? Q2: How would you have played, to make those songs you love, better?
Knock Knock? - Who's there? - Meg White's most complex beat To reply to you, Q1 yes Q2 you probably are not a drummer if you ask that question, there are countless way you could improve the drums on this songs, I'll say just the easier to understand, dynamics. Ringo is a different story, if we remove the romantic idea of what he played and who he played with, technically he was an average drummer imho but a drummer and played great with the songs. Meg on the other side is what a year top of drums lessons give to you, she's not even on the scale for professional drummers. Now, the fact that this goes very well with Jack White massive ego (and probably small penis) is another story, he doesn't want anyone to steal the scene, so a mediocre drums is what he wants.
I can play drums but I wouldn't call myself a drummer. Meg's style of playing is White Stripes playing. 'Now, the fact that this goes very well with Jack White massive ego (and probably small penis) is another story, he doesn't want anyone to steal the scene, so a mediocre drums is what he wants.' There's no need for name calling and/or insults.
You don't have to be a professional drummer to see that someone's not actually good at drumming, just like you don't have to be a professional chef to say that a meal is bad.
Your comparison is quite good, but flawed. If a chef cooks a meal with an ingredient I don't like, it doesn't matter how well it has been prepared, I still wouldn't like it (I'm thinking of Durian). It doesn't mean that it isn't how it should be. Jack white is the 'chef' of White Stripes, and if he thinks it's fine for WS, then it's how it should be.
@but why She's perfect for the style that the White Stripes set out to achieve. You really think that Jack White, who's the ultimate perfectionist/control freak would pair up with a substandard performer? Simple does not equal bad. Some of the best drummers in the world are those who purposely kept their drumming pared back and simple: Dave Grohl in Nirvana, Ringo Starr, etc.
@but why That's laughable. The White Stripes wasn't a charity for bringing in people off the streets Jack felt sorry for. She wasn't interested in being in a band, and *he convinced her to form one with him.* He chose her. He was inspired by her way of playing, and we have Meg White to thank for how the White Stripes turned out. It wouldn't have been the same with any other drummer. Sorry, but you sound like a 13 year old. The idea that musicians have to sound "perfect" was thrown out the window in the punk era, and again in 90s grunge. "Sloppy" playing has its own hidden intricacies and techniques. Humans aren't metronomes or computers, no one has perfect timing.
She's a great drummer. People think that throwing fills every minute and banging pedals all the time is skill and think Ringo Starr is a bad drummer while Lars Ulrich is a great one, wrong. Timing is what makes a great drummer. Having constant BPM and rhythm is what rest of the band relies on. There are drummers that can do blast beat in every corner but drummers like meg are few and rare
It is how JW pronounced Salvation Army as a kid. And that was just a fun working title for the music, which Jack had written before he came up with the lyrics, to allow him to identify which song he was talking about. The title only developed a deeper meaning later.
As a Belgian, I didn't know we popularised the song in stadiums ! Also, before knowing the title I always knew it as "pooo polo po po pooo pooo", that's the "unofficial" title for French speakers basically.
I work at a stadium as a food runner (its essentially give rich people food) and hearing this song after every goal or really whenever it is. It’s unforgettable and magical till this day.

I remember that as a kid (around 7yo), people used to sing this when someone did something impressive, I had no idea of the group, of the music, or even the fact that it was originally played on guitar, in fact the first time that I heard the song, I was like "wait, I finally found it?" (and btw I'm French if that matters)
3:49 You did a very good reconstruction of the facts, I'll add a few details: - When the Bruges fans would have heard the piece, and then used it for the first time, it was in a pub in Milan, when they were away match in Italy (where Bruges won 1 to 0 against Milan in the first leg, except lose on return home) - The bass line is identical to one of the main themes of the first movement of Anton Bruckner's Fifth Symphony. - During the 2020 European football championships (played now in 2021 and won by Italy) there was a variation in the lyrics (if we can call them lyrics), "Po po porca puttena", a joking expression of a well-known (in Italy) and old comedian, Lino Banfi, to whom a player, Ciro Immobile, had dedicated the first goal scored by Italy in the first match of the tournament, going close to a camera and saying "porca puttena" ("porca puttAna" is a slang expression in Italian, halfway between expressing amazement and cursing, but with the "E" using the Banfi dialect)
In Belgium, rival teams of Club Brugge, actually use the chant against them, with the phrase 'Alle boeren zijn homo" (all farmers are gay, the farmers being the nickname for club brugge fans)
" and you dont have to be sober to join in...", this is a really important one

It's always those small attention to details that speak volumes of your love for your craft!

To say meg white is a bad drummer is kind of just missing the point of the white stripes and the genius of the sound.
@@KantFromEC Lars has probably been covered up by a backing track for the last 15 years, don't kid yourself

'Ringo Starr can't play drums.'
Q1: Are you a drummer?
Q2: How would you have played, to make those songs you love, better?
Knock Knock? - Who's there? - Meg White's most complex beat
To reply to you, Q1 yes Q2 you probably are not a drummer if you ask that question, there are countless way you could improve the drums on this songs, I'll say just the easier to understand, dynamics.
If I think a dog's barking is the best for my songs it still wouldn't make him a singer.
Jack himself didn't even know why iy became a stadium chant 😂
Obsessed with the number 3? I know this feeling well.
Oh jeez, the triangles in the video, I finally get it!
Sure megs drumming might be primitive, but she still sounds great.
Its not that its primitive, she cant even keep time
@but why She's perfect for the style that the White Stripes set out to achieve.
No.
*Then wouldn't you think with that kind of logic they would have called it **_3 Nation Army_** instead?*
The song's title originated from Jack's mispronunciation of "Salvation Army" as a child.
3 and 7 is a number pair
I assumed it was based on the WW1 army of seven nations in Greece.
It is how JW pronounced Salvation Army as a kid. And that was just a fun working title for the music, which Jack had written before he came up with the lyrics, to allow him to identify which song he was talking about. The title only developed a deeper meaning later.
Who do u think is gonna win the Indy 500 and Monaco gp?

(and btw I'm French if that matters)
3:49 You did a very good reconstruction of the facts, I'll add a few details:
- When the Bruges fans would have heard the piece, and then used it for the first time, it was in a pub in Milan, when they were away match in Italy (where Bruges won 1 to 0 against Milan in the first leg, except lose on return home)
- The bass line is identical to one of the main themes of the first movement of Anton Bruckner's Fifth Symphony.
In my country we sometimes sing “all the Germans are homosexual” (in Dutch of course) with this melody
Am also Dutch, can confirm.
What? I'm German and I really want to know why you do that omg 😂
Typical banter between rival fans. It is the same reason why you will hear the chant "all police is pigs" on German football stadiums these days.
