Im just now starting my programming journey at 29 and really hoping to make games some day. I have a lot of catching up to do because I'm a high school dropout (medical/mental problems). Been taking the free CS50x course online and really enjoying it so far. Right now they have us working with C, which is cool. Getting to learn a lot of core fundamental things about programming. This video was motivating, thanks for that. Best of luck on your journey!

I'm not applying for internships at the moment, but this might make me change my mind. I'm curious, what kind of stuff did you work on at Rare? Did they just drop you straight into working on The Legend of Monkey Island, or was there a training period?
Hey thanks. So yes there was a period of time where I had to get used to how things worked there, and I did have a period where I was doing “training”. So graphics programming is worth it huhn ? Even for starting roles !! Happy to know that 🙂 I was getting worried that adding my OpenGL or Vulkan projecrs to my resume would be useless if I apply for a Game Dev job. Its not like that I'm super Pro in those APIs.

well this is a tricky one... so i think obviously it somewhat helps but i think the part that helps the most is the amount of projects/games i have made. Most of which i made because i have a TH-cam channel. But then again i applied for some jobs without actually revealing my TH-cam channel. Do with that as you will :))

What a cool video! It is really motivating me. Where did you do the courses?
i didnt know you have to freeze studies to go gain experience, thought you just work while relaxing semesters' intensity
Absolutely blindsided by the revelation that a TH-camr I've followed for a few years has been my co-worker the whole time 😅 Although I work in Player Insights, so we won't have crossed paths too much... Hope you had an amazing time with Rare and good luck with the rest of the studies. The work you guys did with the Legend of Monkey Island was brilliant!
That’s awesome and so bizarre. Thank you for watching my stuff I really appreciate it!! But also yeah we probably wouldn’t have crossed paths.
So graphics programming is worth it huhn ? Even for starting roles !! Happy to know that 🙂 I was getting worried that adding my OpenGL or Vulkan projecrs to my resume would be useless if I apply for a Game Dev job. Its not like that I'm super Pro in those APIs.
I’m trying to contact rare just because as a pirate I would like to recommend some improvements to the game,I would love it if when a ship sinks from cannon fire, it had a better animation, breaking apart or something like that instead of just sinking and disappearing, hopefully you will read this :)
Sure doesnt feel like a AAA game when playing it. you guys fr dropped the ball hard on this update.
it's probably all her fault
@@d7mf3j lmao
Do you know why those guys didn't port sea of thieves for ps4 and only ps5?
keep up comms with them, they def seem to like you so if you like them back it'll be really important down the line
nice work zyg
"How i accidentally became a mcdonalds worker (I SENT IN A APPLICATION???)!!!!!"
Hi, just a quick question the fact that you've got a decent online presence (like youtube and stuff..) help you getting the job?
well this is a tricky one... so i think obviously it somewhat helps but i think the part that helps the most is the amount of projects/games i have made. Most of which i made because i have a TH-cam channel. But then again i applied for some jobs without actually revealing my TH-cam channel. Do with that as you will :))
@@ZygerGFX NOTED!
TBH I also want to be game programmer, I learned unity made 2 small personal games in it, and i am learning c++ and opengl. And i am also in college rn. So your story felt relatable, to a great extent. Except for the part where you actually got a job.
Anyways congrats and thanks for sharing your story, I am suddenly full of motivation right now.
by any chance, do you study game course in Staffordshire uni ? Cuz I remember I did C++ in the game engine creation course and ye I also have to did the Mario game project with SDL
can u fix the hitrigg in sea of thievs before i hung my self?
Damn lucky you for landing a job at Sea of Thieves. I'm doing a masters in Games technology so i hope i can land a job at a games company
Congrats, Well Deserved!
The pure anxiety after hearing the word “pointers” is so bad bro
I done my bachelors in game development and we not once were told about internships 😭
crazy you worked on monkey island, what did you work on specifically for that?
Wish I had the same opportunities to apply to those kind of internships, in my country all internships available are absolutely unlinked with game industry
2:10 once you mentioned the language of gods I don't need to watch the rest of the video to see how you got the job
any resources you found very helpful during the start of your graphics programming journey? in a similar position as you are as a student in uni and kinda want to try and pivot to graphics programming, except theres not a lot of beginner friendly resources in a digestible format
I see you like chess-like grids for the backgrounds, and they look cool but i think it would look cooler if you made the squares move like on Doodley's youtube videos :3
actually great idea thank you for letting me know :))
These grids reminded me of lens distortion grids every time, haha
