You know I hope it works out I work hard in the kitchen I put in 65 hours a week in season and 40 5 months of the year but I hope it works out for me because you are saying if you work hard and you put in the miles they will call you and you will be top on their list every job I've worked at even now cooking there are lazy motherfukers they get the just skate by and reap the rewards off of me and a couple other people working hard and busting our ass that is my reason I got to get out of the kitchen and do my own thing I hope it works out for me I start at Swift February
New Students are not physically conditioned to drive long hours. They have to build up there driving stamina. Especially if theyve never driven a manual transmission. How do you combat this issue, if at all
BloodSweatnBass Very best but you Artie will not be driving a manual transmission because just about every company is going with automatics now and they’re testing out with automatic restrictions on their license. We drive two hours at a time take a 15 to 30 minute break and crank it back up again. After about three days they are ready.
@nattydredlocks1973 I dont resort to being judgmental or call names but can you elaborate on why you feel this way...for information purposes....the trucking family should help one another understand the ins and outs of the industry.
BloodSweatnBass This industry is full of negative people and I try not to let them get to me. I’ll keep doing what I’m doing because I know it’s helping a lot of people who are getting into the industry. We all have haters at some point.
I applied to swift last week and talked to a recruiter, getting my CDL permit in New York then they are sending me to Indianapolis for 3-4 weeks. I'm there to work, even in my current job I hate standing around. Got to stay busy.
So iam just wondering why are they sending you to Indianapolis and not Columbus oh. i have been looking into joining swift. If u dont mind who is your recruiter
life talks My recruiter isn’t there anymore but whom ever you get as a recruiter, I can verify whether or not they’re telling you to truth and I’m willing to answer any questions for you
@@king__slayer1927 Vally something I think. They originally wanted me to go to a facility in Buffalo as a daily commute but Buffalo is HOURS away from me, so he decided to pick Indiana I guess.
50 Plus Great Video very informative. The only question I have is I can request a mentor that actually runs hard this time, cause when I did the Swift thing back 12 years ago before going to college and getting my degrees the mentor I had was well one of the not so great ones. liked to take a lot of time at home on don set routes plus stop at 98% of all money pits aka Casinos. I am like you I want to come back out and actually make money and run and show that pattern up front in the mentor truck so that my driver leader already sees that. I am a person that does not need to be home hardly at all that comes from Prior Service Military. thank you for your time and assistance with this. Hope you are doing well where ever you all. I sure would have requested you.
Address flatbed for Melton right now and I’ll probably start taking students in February. The best thing about having a mentor the trash and runs hard is you’ll be able to get through the training quicker at Swift however here at Melton it doesn’t matter because it’s based on time not miles.
Due to Medical reason a shoulder replacement and still painful movement there is no way I could do flatbed and strap the loads good enough without killing my shoulders, thanks to a deer the non replaced one is not much better. Thanks for the answer. By chance do you have Niki the Recruiter contact since she is a Veteran as well, I am looking at the Veteran Program to go back.
Hey man, I may 50/50 go back into it again April or June (12 years ago, same), Prior Military (same), want to stay out 4-8 weeks at a time (maybe same lol), non-smoking (in truck, pipe/tobacco outside only every so often), and if Swift has decent jobs/runs for Teams, I would like to team. Did team with another student back in the day, loved it. We ran, ran, ran. I don't mind evenings nights, and he didn't mind dealing with the shippers lol. As long as Swift doesn't do like some, and cut your cents by mile by half. That's a shitty practice, supposed to be 50/50 split for drivers, no dock on cpm. No way I'd wanna do flatbed either, and jack up my back. Reefer seems to get the most consistent miles, can haul dry, in reefer as well.
600 miles is rough to get here on the west coast, mostly cause we can’t go over 55mph in California...but I have yet to get less than 500 miles a day...get in truck, keep the doors closed, keep the tires turning and you will keep on earning! Good video big fitty!
Great advice, from someone that knows. How many new drivers, actually sleep 10 hours when you not in the truck? You should be able to do everything you need to do, and still get 8 hours sleep.
Absolutely, It took me sometime to realize, that I was making all my appointments on time, but I was using all available hours to do it. Once I realized most loads can deliver early I started running much differently.
First video of yours I am seeing. I don’t know if you still are with swift but if you are I hope to get you or someone like you as a mentor. I’m going to swift trucking academy soon and ready to put in work.
I'm like you. I get my Load and stop as minimal as possible as I try to get to my Stop ASAP hoping to get another Load faster just to race to that one too
Running 11 hours is a rookie move. You're gonna hit that 70 hour limit. Id rather do 8.5 hours everyday and NEVER get a 34 hour reset. Facts. EDIT: didn't watch till the end. Yea im younger with no kids. I have no need for a day off or home time. I love driving. I don't feel like im working.
Kindred Lebel Facts... I enjoy taking a 34 hour break at home. Maybe you don’t have anyone in your life. But maybe you’re right and NEVER going home is a smart thing for YOU while someone else is at home satisfying your wife. "ROOKIE MOVE"
Well I for one don't have any hurt feelings. And if i did have a wife, id have her come with me. But the real challenge is getting out of trucking and into real estate which is what im currently doing. I admire your passion to "run hard." But you're doing it wrong buddy. You can still get your 4 days every month, which should be plenty of time if your wife is an honest, loyal woman. I feel for you, if you're currently worried about that. I am blessed with gods choice to grant me the insight needed for my brothers and sisters.
Kindred Lebel Not hurt feelings at all. My dig at you was in response to you. If you can dish out a little bit you got to be able to take some. Real estate is an okay move, I’ve been in real estate since the early 2000s and made a large Sum of money. If you’re gonna be successful, take the advice of someone already successful in real estate. Just like thinking your way of driving is the only correct way, I made 100,000 in my first year trucking obviously there is a second way to be successful and so is an approach to real estate and don’t be close minded. Just some advice.
BUT. Preaching to rookies that your way is the best way is invalid. My way is the best way if they are willing to sacrifice time with their loved ones for true financial stability. Which getting out of a loop to a better one is always the game.
No sir. Ive had my CDL since 2005 but was a newlywed with young children that had just moved to a new state with a new home, and my new wife had issues with me being away earlier in our marriage. So i drove for 2years until inwas forced to seek other options. Now that we’ve moved to Northside Houston and kids are grown Im looking to get back on the road for regional or short haul cause I loved it. Decent work history, Great physical condition, No criminal history, my only issue is two moving violations this year, one last year in my personal vehicle.
Hope I get a mentor like you, if I start in Apr/May. Drove trucks 12 years ago, didn't know what I was doing, flip flopping schedules, etc. I liked Regional better, but only because I could drive to my limit each day (not flipping day/night). For some reason, my dispatcher in other co/OTR, had me sitting alot, with a reefer, was annoying. Learning alot online.
Youbiest!! The only thing that slows me down is the traffic! When the interstate is clogged from the holidays watch out! Everyone was on their way home from the 4th...frustrating to try and get mileage knocked out. I usually hit 640-660 daily! As soon as my clock hits 10 hr Bam hit On-duty Pre-trip! Gotta roll!
johnny cray What’s the main objective for the student? Is it to make the immediate money or learn how to run a hard successfully for the long term? Got a thing bigger than just for the moment.
@@50plustrucker no offense, but driving straight is no big deal. As you know, the biggest issue is backing up, & 40 backups vs. tons of worthless miles doesn't balance. Mentors want to run hard because you get a cut out of the miles, double your miles if I'm not mistaken. Mentors run & run & run students all day.....just to get to the shipper tired, & then having to backup with little concentration .
johnny cray No offense taken on my end. I hope my response doesn’t offend you. Nothing you say it has any truth to it. Backing is not hard that’s just a bunch of bullshit that gets Trumpeted. I don’t know how many miles you’ve driven but you’ve obviously not driven in traffic or on interstate with construction. Much more difficult to do at 65 mph vs back into a spot. To be honest your response sounds as if you’re still in school or maybe not a driver at all because you’re just repeating clichés that have no validity to them at all. I teach my students to run hard because I run hard and if you’ve been following me you would know that I run hard long before I ever got my first student so what you’re saying makes no sense. Please take the offense!
Sean Marban There’s so much misinformation out there and this is a rookie channel. We have to be honest and straight up with our brothers and sisters getting into this business. I want them all to be successful.
Students don't get pay for miles, they get ripped off. They get pay daily. So you as a mentor get paid for their miles.no need to run a student 600 miles a day.
I respect your opinion however the student Will eventually get off them into his truck and have to create his own check and if he’s getting paid by the mile it would be a disservice if the mentor did not teach the student how to run and make a living at it. If you don’t think the student needs to learn how to run 600 miles a day, I really don’t think you are a truck driver. Again I don’t mean any disrespect.
I'm sorry to disagree with you.but a good mentor is not the one who works his student to death.you are looking at your pocket and is understandable, I will not criticize you for that.but students don't get paid by mile.they get paid by day of work don't give me that bs.i can probably be your mentor too.haha have a blessing day brother.
Does Swift or any OTR trucking company with CDL training hire young people with no work history or its a zero percent chance of them giving me a chance? Ive been in college and its just not for me bu i feel like if Swift turns me down then everyone else will also
Paladin I know others have hair problems getting on with trucking companies including Swift because of lack of employment however I would like for you to give Autumn a call and let her know I said please help you. Autumn@touchstonerecruiting.group 801-420-7623
How often do you have to stop for a bathroom break? I know that older people are usually on blood pressure meds and have to stop more often, I'm older too and it's the one thing I worry about the most. I drove RV's to dealerships across the country although, we didn't always have specific times to arrive at a dealership we had to be there before they closed especially on the weekends. I drove hard because I couldn't get paid until I delivered the RV and forward the paperwork back to the company and there was a time limit on submitting the paperwork and getting paid so, I really needed to arrive at a dealership no later than 2 pm on a Friday. If it was a Thursday, I wouldn't rush as hard but spend the night at the truck stop nearby. However, depending on where I am and what mode of transportation I need to take to get back to Indiana and pick up another load that could be tricky. It was Drive Away that made me want to become a truck driver because I've always liked taking my bed with me and unlike drive away I don't have to spend my money to pick up another load, however, it does seem like we had more freedom. I could always stop at the nearest rest stop or gas station and use the bathroom but with an 18 wheeler that seems a little harder to do. Do they frown on a person taking a lot of bathroom breaks?
You’re going to piss off the snowflakes, lol. My mentor would start at 6am and push us down the road a couple hours while I slept. I’d take over 9am and do my 600+ (record was 700). He’d stay up and coach me for a while then take a nap (curtains open in case I needed anything). When I finished he’d hop in the seat and push until midnight. We shut down every night 12am-6am (give or take). Got plenty of sleep, ran hard (5000+), learned a lot! Was he rewarded for me running hard? Of course! I had no problem with it. I understand there are bad trainers but just because a good trainer pushes you hard doesn’t make them bad. It’s entirely possible to run hard and learn at the same time. 50 + is right... your work ethic will determine your success at Swift. I was a platinum team driver every month during my tenure at Swift. $1600-$2k checks every week as a rookie.
Haven't listened to video yet, just starting, am wondering if Team Driving is worth it at Swift, and if the dispatchers will let you run daily 8.5, instead of reset BS. Thanks in advance, for putting information out.
Is there a difference when accepting a load between reefer vs dry van? So if your reefer can you accept a load in anticipation of when your trailer would be unloaded?
Hell i am in Memphis,TN when i start cdl class can I request u as a mentor. Hell i had to drove my car from MN to TN every 3mo & 2 round trips in a day. So 500mi is easy.
Totally not the same but I delivered pizza 9 to 8 got off drove an hour to the next town over and uber untill 3 am and then wake up the next day and do it again. Endurance is the last thing I'm worried about lol.
I need to be with a different mentor bc my mentor is on a dedicated route with short runs and home every weekend. I'm supposed to be driving flatbed otr but this guy is a dry bed driver. I feel like I'm not getting the experience or teaching that is gonna benefit me in my day to day duties. I Been in a hotel since Friday evening thinking about this whole situation its Sunday now and won't be back on the road until noon tomorrow. Smdh. I accepted this mentor bc I wanted to go ahead and get started bc a lot of my classmates still aren't with a mentor and are at home wanting to get started. I was told not to pass on a mentor when I get called bc there is a shortage of mentors but I just don't believe that I am getting the proper training(nothing against my mentor because I believe he is doing a good job training me).
Loaded up and Trucking! Also remember, when you get finished you going to have securement training and you can go out with a flatbed driver for a few loads. I would definitely stick with this guy until you’re done
I was thinking that too. Just worried about getting to drive in California and up in the mountains bc the dedicated route he has is for Georgia Pacific and only covers from panhandle of Florida to Texas. I'm just wandering if I don't get that experience with him will they get me with a mentor that does. I'm of the believe "never look a gift horse in the mouth" but I also believe experience is the best teacher. Just thinking I should maybe communicate with my Driver Leader and see if theres a plan to expose me to these particular experiences. Quick question what should I expect from my mentor? I think my ignorance and blind expectations may be what's causing my concern.
Loaded up and Trucking! He should teach you how to do this job. He can’t teach you everything in 200 hours and you can’t experience every situation in 200 hours
KingRandii Yes you do have that option depending on your location and if you aren’t doing refrigerated or dry or flatbed. Whatever you do you need to let them know upfront what your intentions are so they can let you know what’s available
Great advice, looking forward to burning some fuel shortly. One question on the qualcom logs, is it all manual or does it do it automatically? Thanks 50😎👍
Very good info! I have had my CDL for years but never drove due to a different career choice. Now i'm presented with a 2nd career choice and I want to drive like you and use your techniques; i'm currently assigned to a Swift recuriter.
I have a Load 1,515 miles, pickup on 7/6 10am mnt time and del 7/10 10am eastern time. Drove 604 first day and 210 second day. Had 30minutes left on 70. Doing 34 now and will start at 2310 tonite and drive hard for next 2 days during night to make del. you don’t get loads if you sit around!!! And you don’t make money if wheels aren’t turning!🚛💨💨
I wish u worked for willson logistics in MT. I definitely dont want to get into this career if I do t want to work, not saying I dont want to work now I'm saying When I was younger I had no work ethic, I just dont want this to defeat me and go from job to job again like when I was in my 20s. That's my main concern, I want to make money and not fuck it up for myself. I think I mite be a bit negative about myself but I just dont want to fuck up. I sure hope the trainer I get has ALOT of years of experiance not a year or 2 because to my that person is still learning too. I ask alot of questions and I'm sure people get annoyed. I just want someone who has the experience u have to teach the way u do. What I'm saying I mite put myself in that position but not intentionally, that's why I'm hoping they give me a trainer with more than 3 years experience.
Run and be ontime...early is better PTA is everything when 20 trucks are going to same area..can you speak on this 50...I'm new and trying to run as hard as you..thanks😎
Rider 71 You’re right about that and a lot of guys will not set there PTA until hours after their final so they can be off duty longer. That’s gotta be a video
Laura Survivor You set your PTA. You cannot set your PTA out further than 10 hours I’ll believe. Pretty close to that. If you need your PTA set out further as if you were taking a 34, you would have to get that handled by your driver manager
I wish I would have seen your videos before I contacted Swift. I would have definitely given Autumn a call. I'm not really sure about the guy they assigned me to. Now a question: Do you always try to do the 10 hours straight of SB/OFF time or do you split it? I really do appreciate your videos and your insight. Thanks.
Clown... Swift should relieve you of your duties as a trainer. Especially if you have newjacks driving more than 500 miles a day east of I 35. I did it. But looking back at it, it wasn't safe. At least twice my trainer made me stop and take a nap. Something that I have no problem doing to this day; years later. I train my trainees when, where and how to nap and still arrive at there destination on time. It is, what it is. That should be a company's driver attitude when it comes to the miles. Mega-carriers are only going to let you run so many miles a week. Their is little if anything you can do about it.
Golf Wayne Why is everything in your life negative? I wish you had some joy in your life growing up and maybe you wouldn’t think everyone in the world were bad. It’s okay, you can go outside and play now.
Golf Wayne my response was to let you off easy because you’re obviously not one of my subscribers. If you followed my page you would know I’m teaching my students to do the exact same thing that I have done since I started trucking. Why don’t you take the time to educate yourself about me before you start accusing me of abuse. By the way, after you realize I’m not the person you are accusing me of being, I already forgave you and I hope you will continue to follow my page. But please just be positive. We don’t do negative on this channel.

How do you combat this issue, if at all
BloodSweatnBass
Very best but you Artie will not be driving a manual transmission because just about every company is going with automatics now and they’re testing out with automatic restrictions on their license. We drive two hours at a time take a 15 to 30 minute break and crank it back up again. After about three days they are ready.
Exactly! This guy is a clown for saying that but if you look at his clock he drove correctly. He drove 10 hours but stretched it out over 14 hours.
@nattydredlocks1973 I dont resort to being judgmental or call names but can you elaborate on why you feel this way...for information purposes....the trucking family should help one another understand the ins and outs of the industry.

I applied to swift last week and talked to a recruiter, getting my CDL permit in New York then they are sending me to Indianapolis for 3-4 weeks. I'm there to work, even in my current job I hate standing around. Got to stay busy.

Keep that attitude and you’ll do just fine. You have to keep moving if you wanna make that money
So iam just wondering why are they sending you to Indianapolis and not Columbus oh. i have been looking into joining swift. If u dont mind who is your recruiter

@@seanhaywood1789 Sorry my friend I did not have the recruiters contact information
You are becoming a star on here.Love your work ethic and straight forward common sense style mixed with a bit of flare.

600 miles is rough to get here on the west coast, mostly cause we can’t go over 55mph in California...but I have yet to get less than 500 miles a day...get in truck, keep the doors closed, keep the tires turning and you will keep on earning! Good video big fitty!
QuietxRiot831 Yes I know that 55 miles an hour thing but you’re right, the goal is just to get as many as possible
Always educational videos that's my goal once I get back is to run hard and fast
Great advice, from someone that knows. How many new drivers, actually sleep 10 hours when you not in the truck? You should be able to do everything you need to do, and still get 8 hours sleep.
Thomas Kirkpatrick That’s right and that’s how we make that money
Absolutely, It took me sometime to realize, that I was making all my appointments on time, but I was using all available hours to do it. Once I realized most loads can deliver early I started running much differently.
Thomas Kirkpatrick That’s right brother all you have to do is focus hard and have a good work ethic
First video of yours I am seeing. I don’t know if you still are with swift but if you are I hope to get you or someone like you as a mentor. I’m going to swift trucking academy soon and ready to put in work.
I'm like you. I get my Load and stop as minimal as possible as I try to get to my Stop ASAP hoping to get another Load faster just to race to that one too
Brandon Balderas
That’s how you get paid big time
Running 11 hours is a rookie move.
Kindred Lebel
Facts...
I will pray for your marriage. Pray for your students, and pray for your health.
Kindred Lebel
Not hurt feelings at all.
Im from Houston too Sir. Great job explaining how not to be a bum driver
BloodSweatnBass
Are you driving or in school?
Gotta roll!
Can you please discuss the difference between a 2 week dedicated route versus 2 weeks on/2 days off? I have to decide but need more information.

I’ll need to get some information on that first.
So does the qualcomm automatically keep track or do you have to log your own stuff ? If so cant you just lie about it ?

Why run hard if trainees don't get paid by the mile?
johnny cray
What’s the main objective for the student? Is it to make the immediate money or learn how to run a hard successfully for the long term? Got a thing bigger than just for the moment.
@@50plustrucker no offense, but driving straight is no big deal. As you know, the biggest issue is backing up, & 40 backups vs. tons of worthless miles doesn't balance. Mentors want to run hard because you get a cut out of the miles, double your miles if I'm not mistaken. Mentors run & run & run students all day.....just to get to the shipper tired, & then having to backup with little concentration .
johnny cray
No offense taken on my end.
@@50plustrucker Amen! keep doing what you're doing, teaching your students how to get the most out of this career!

There’s so much misinformation out there and this is a rookie channel.

Will you get paid while waiting on a mentor
P Bama
It honestly depends on your situation
If you don’t have a mentor, you don’t get paid. When your driving with a mentor. You get a flat weekly rate. Til you upgrade.
Haven't listened to video yet, just starting, am wondering if Team Driving is worth it at Swift, and if the dispatchers will let you run daily 8.5, instead of reset BS. Thanks in advance, for putting information out.
Oh and what in the world takes you all that time for a pretrip??

Also remember, when you get finished you going to have securement training and you can go out with a flatbed driver for a few loads. I would definitely stick with this guy until you’re done
I was thinking that too. Just worried about getting to drive in California and up in the mountains bc the dedicated route he has is for Georgia Pacific and only covers from panhandle of Florida to Texas. I'm just wandering if I don't get that experience with him will they get me with a mentor that does. I'm of the believe "never look a gift horse in the mouth" but I also believe experience is the best teacher. what should I expect from my mentor? I think my ignorance and blind expectations may be what's causing my concern.

I wish u worked for willson logistics in MT. I definitely dont want to get into this career if I do t want to work, not saying I dont want to work now I'm saying When I was younger I had no work ethic, I just dont want this to defeat me and go from job to job again like when I was in my 20s. What I'm saying I mite put myself in that position but not intentionally, that's why I'm hoping they give me a trainer with more than 3 years experience.

You set your PTA.
Why are you so upset?
