I saw this car yesterday. It looks WAY better in person than any computer will ever show. I was seriously stunned at how amazing the LED's on the back look like. It really stands out
I just bought a 2012 cls 350 petrol and with massage seats, new sat nav with resr view cam, new ambient 64 color lights and with b&o sound system it would be perfect
I am a VW-Group man and always have been. Started off in a Polo, moved into Golf, then into Audis (had A3, A4 and now A6) Now the kids are older and I don't need as much practicality I decided to have a look at the A7. Nearly got one until I heard about the new CLS. Went for a drive and it was FANTASTIC. However I'm looking on the used market because it's more pricey than the Audi, but defo worth it. Pleased to know Mat Watson seems to agree :-)
my Corsa's 1.7D produces 74 bhp, 165 Nm (122 lb/ft) at 1800 rpm.. and when you add the fuel consumption is 4,5 to 5 L/100km you get pretty pleased.. the 1.9 SDI gets around 66 bhp.. the engine has been replaced by a 105bhp 1.6 TDI with a DPF (Diesel particle filter.. something like that ) it makes its fumes cleaner :)... they are good and reliable engines that will get you where you need to go no problems.. but if you're looking for high performance.. look elsewhere or put a big turbo ;)
Looks by far is an improvement. More muscular body shape with chopped look roofline for the gangsta in you. The 5.5 liter v8 w twin turbos and perf pkg makes this car the best CLS in it's class of engine options.
I think red is not the color for this car. It looks better in sublime metalics where the light highlights the sleek lines rather than a shouting at you color like this one.
I drive an Opel Corsa 1.7 diesel and it doesn't have a turbo, my neighbor drives an Astra diesel without a turbo.. one of the most popular cars currently are the Golf SDI, Octavia 1.9 SDI, and a lot other diesels without turbos.. turbos are a thing for to long discussions... and also diesels are known to go for more than a 300 000 kilometers without needing a major service.. everyone bought the Octavia SDi just because you dont have to service it to much, the same goes for my Corsa :)
well i know that there is a difference between the UK and US gallons UK = 4.5 liter; US = 3.8 liter.. UK mpg is calculated by EU standards and the US mpg is calculated by the EPA (i think not sure)... their standards don't compare directly... and then you have to add the difference in the fuel quality and a lot of other things which together add up to a different mpg rating or a different L/100km rating
everyone has its own opinion.. mine is based on what i have seen.. but you can't exclude that a Diesel is also used because of the higher torque on the lower end.. that's why they are used in heavy machines.. you don't need that much rpms to get yourself moving.. :)
The old design is better but that's what happen when you almost reach the perfect lines, it's difficult to upgrade it so you have to build a whole new concept
Maybe some of you will find it funny, but it's 2024 and I just bought CLS350cdi 2015 and I am so happy owning it, knowing how long it took me to save money for that
@RobbyRaiAshtray1122 Before you said all this did you atleast research it? If you did you'd know that they wern't trying to update the style of the old one they were making a whole new car.....
I was very tired when i watched this the first time and overlooked that it was a diesel and got those mpg numbers. 6.2 is acceptable given that, but its not even available in america right?
Loved your review! I wish more CarBuyer reviews you make are like this- more filming locations (if possible), non-linear segments, interesting facts...keep up the good work!
@Spotty1125 the new 4.6L twin turbo v8 is pretty good on gas about 25% better fuel economy than the 5.5L v8. Going up in the lineup means you have more money. If you buy a 100k+ car, gas isnt the biggest concern. Power and fuel economy don't mix.
I’ve watched several CLS reviews and this is the first one to mention the feminine and masculine comparison. I’ve thought this was true but never heard it before. The first gen did not catch my eye like the 2nd gen. Had to get one. 2nd gen is the best! A work of art!
it looks amazing better than the a7 but the a7 averages 54 mpg also it doesnt look as much as a sedan /coupe thing as the old one but this, this! is an amazing looking car interior not so much i like audis interior better
I really would like to know what kind of camera they use for this filming? Because at some point in the video the camera can shoot the LED lights without it blinking or flickering, which most cameras failed to do so
The overall verdict of the presenter 'It's not as ground breaking as the original'. True talk. I still like the styling of the predecessor which has pure lines in my opinion. Just keep car constructions stupid simple. The involvement of LED technology in modern cars these days is overshadowing the true characteristics of luxury & performance cars. :-)
@WendalC Then a hole new car should be delivered with a hole new name. CLS stands for "Coupé Leicht Sport" and its called that for its shape being based on the coupé body under which the original was but this new model DOES NOT fit the discription based on its name. It would make a great S-class but it is NOT a CLS.
NZG I agree .I have my second cls the same colour as the one tested 350 d and love it,a 2017 model, which because new model is out[ which is not as attractive and has much cheaper looking interior] retails at a bargain price,.The torque of 460 ft/ lbs gives excellent acceleration and pulling power, and returns 40 mpg.
how is it that the cls 550 with its 4.6 liter twin turbo engines gets the same mpg as a merc 350 E Class? I don't know, but all the more reason to opt for the cls, also, please bring a diesel cls to the states
@Bahzad23 The flagship luxury sedan is the S-Class The flagship luxury roadster is the SL The flagship luxury coupe is the CL The flagship supercar is the SLS They also have a Maybach brand but it's going to be discontinued shortly.
I had 2 new M-Bs. They were pleasant cars to drive but both had many service and repair issues, even within the first few months of ownership. It seems my experiences with them were mirrored by those of the thousands of respondents to Consumer Reports surveys. I switched to a trouble-free Japanese brand.
because "heavy machines" are functionnning 24/7 and 30 years. adblue and blueefficiency or stuffs like that are just commercial names, diesels will always polute more than petrols. But they are more "green" now than before thats right 24 heure Le Mans, well, obviously its not a matter of performance but a matter of long distance, diesels are best on long distance because they consume less oil also diesels are less durable cause they need turbos wich are fragile in the time &need maintenance
2020 still a perfect car ❤️
❤
Facts I’m finally getting mine
Still my dream car. Perfection.
2021 still a perfect car
Just brought one today
I saw this car yesterday. It looks WAY better in person than any computer will ever show. I was seriously stunned at how amazing the LED's on the back look like. It really stands out
Jim Ly definitely looks much better in person than in photos/videos a lot of people don’t seem to realize that.
Watching this in 2019...still the best looking Mercedes ever!
You’ve come a long way Matt! Cheers!
I had no idea this was matt, i only figured out when he came close to the camera when talking about rear sensors
The Matt not yet poking the exhaust tips.
l am a BMW driver... But this is just beautiful! Well done Mercedes :)
I like the way the torque is delivered as he put his foot down, just glues him to his seat
I just bought a 2012 cls 350 petrol and with massage seats, new sat nav with resr view cam, new ambient 64 color lights and with b&o sound system it would be perfect
And he's just an awesome reviewer!
Still one of my dream cars!
stylish and absolutely mercedes quality!
one of the epic car.
M Class, W124, pagoda, SL190, SL300 Gulwing, CLS Mk1
and now CLS MkII
I am a VW-Group man and always have been. Started off in a Polo, moved into Golf, then into Audis (had A3, A4 and now A6)
Now the kids are older and I don't need as much practicality I decided to have a look at the A7. Nearly got one until I heard about the new CLS. Went for a drive and it was FANTASTIC. Connor Marston the cls is nearly as practical as an E class or a6, very close so not losing much there.
I like this one better. To me, this front grille looks better and the rear lights are certainly better
I think it looks much more fascinating in real life !
Mercedes in colours other than black and silver should be appreciated more.
my Corsa's 1.7D produces 74 bhp, 165 Nm (122 lb/ft) at 1800 rpm.. and when you add the fuel consumption is 4,5 to 5 L/100km you get pretty pleased.. the 1.9 SDI gets around 66 bhp.. the engine has been replaced by a 105bhp 1.6 TDI with a DPF (Diesel particle filter.. something like that ) it makes its fumes cleaner :)... they are good and reliable engines that will get you where you need to go no problems.. but if you're looking for high performance.. look elsewhere or put a big turbo ;)

BEST LOOKING CAR EVER MADE I LOVE THIS CAR YES!
mee to
much better than the old one!! well done!
my new dream car!
I bought a 2013 Black CLS250 CDI and I love it.
I normally prefer new things, but my vote in terms of looks and engine intangibles still goes to the W219.
The W219 looks very dated nowadays.
*C219
Matt in pre-Carwow days pretending he is a tall Richard Hammond with his take on a posh voice.
I think red is not the color for this car. It looks better in sublime metalics where the light highlights the sleek lines rather than a shouting at you color like this one.
Still the same awesome guy before car wow
I will define being successful the day I can buy this car. THe pride, the look and the love for MB. :)
CLS has aged as well as Matt Watson does in 2024.
WOW... absolutely beautiful!
that merc on red looks so good :)
@barlouch finally! someone who says it out straight! I am totally on your side.
well i know that there is a difference between the UK and US gallons

wow - 10 years ago, grunge soundrack - how times have changed
how they have
The old CLS 55 AMG looks and sound better then any of the new one.
everyone has its own opinion.. mine is based on what i have seen.. but you can't exclude that a Diesel is also used because of the higher torque on the lower end.. that's why they are used in heavy machines.. you don't need that much rpms to get yourself moving.. :)
The old design is better but that's what happen when you almost reach the perfect lines, it's difficult to upgrade it so you have to build a whole new concept
Daniel Maia exactly
Actually 1st model looked like a roach to me but that's just me, this one is a little more coupe
Salvador Garcia it’s not that, this one just looks a lot more aggressive and muscular. Looks much better to me
Maybe some of you will find it funny, but it's 2024 and I just bought CLS350cdi 2015 and I am so happy owning it, knowing how long it took me to save money for that
2022 bought the car and it is great
Matt Watson here for carwow
@RobbyRaiAshtray1122 Before you said all this did you atleast research it? If you did you'd know that they wern't trying to update the style of the old one they were making a whole new car.....
I was very tired when i watched this the first time and overlooked that it was a diesel and got those mpg numbers. 6.2 is acceptable given that, but its not even available in america right?

beautiful looking machine!
new cls
This guy does great reviews
@barlouch
I'm American and i completely agree
Beautiful & still looks great in 2024
I just bought this car and it goes very fast!!!!
one day 🙏
the car is an absolute winner.

It's funny coz this guy reviewed the CLS for CarBuyer. It's on youtube also
cls550 4matic is my ideal daily driver. c+d clocked a RWD one at something like 4.4 0-60
Sich lieben.. as usual so funny matt.. keep it on.. that's why we love you
Lexus GS from 2004 has directional headlamps, as does the ancient Citroen DS.
"Active LED headlights"
it looks amazing better than the a7 but the a7 averages 54 mpg
also it doesnt look as much as a sedan /coupe thing as the old one
but this, this! is an amazing looking car
interior not so much i like audis interior better
can't wait to get my new cls delivered!
waiting list sucks
Wish we could get this 350 CDI in the US. The 550 V8 is a bit excessive.
beautiful car
Great Present of CLS .. Thx. Men
beautiful car, i love the interior
I really would like to know what kind of camera they use for this filming? Because at some point in the video the camera can shoot the LED lights without it blinking or flickering, which most cameras failed to do so
they realized he's better than all the other presenters here
Really liked the review :)
Just looks like an S-class. I still don't think you can beat the looks of the 1st gen CLS
i like this reviewer! he is really good!
The overall verdict of the presenter 'It's not as ground breaking as the original'. True talk. I still like the styling of the predecessor which has pure lines in my opinion. @hihiho94 Sorry but who made ABS, ESP and other technologies?
The truth is that companies NEED their competitors to develop.
This cls look better than new one
NZG you mean better than 2018 cls?
NZG I agree .I have my second cls the same colour as the one tested 350 d and love it,a 2017 model, which because new model is out[ which is not as attractive and has much cheaper looking interior] retails at a bargain price,.The torque of 460 ft/ lbs gives excellent acceleration and pulling power, and returns 40 mpg.
David vee6 yes the 2017 cls is much
Nicer, and looks much more aggressive and muscular vs the overly soft/rounded 2018+ cls model
im mat watson and youre watching carwow
with all that aluminium that means that those panels can't rust like normal steel doors, right?
I wonder if you can get 3 seats in the back converted on these .. does anyone know pls?? Thanks.
how is it that the cls 550 with its 4.6 liter twin turbo engines gets the same mpg as a merc 350 E Class? I don't know, but all the more reason to opt for the cls, also, please bring a diesel cls to the states
looks much better than the audi a7... my opinion
@Bahzad23
The flagship luxury sedan is the S-Class
The flagship luxury roadster is the SL
The flagship luxury coupe is the CL
The flagship supercar is the SLS
They also have a Maybach brand but it's going to be discontinued shortly.
Directional headlights. The first on any production car? What about the Citroen DS?
DS had LED lights? Wow, that's impressive
It makes the old one look like a choking, sloping dinosaur.
Mercedes have finally brought beauty to the beast!
totally wrong old one looks sleek and coupe like, this one looks more saloon like therefore more ordinary
netweed09 agreed. Anyone saying the old one looked better needs to see the eye doctor.
It's brilliant and beauty, but I think I prefer the old one
mercedes has so many nice cars, i cant figure out which one is the flagship car
hello! what is the colour code of this paint??
@proteanview No, aluminium and LED is the new standard.
This car is just f'ing gorgeous!
ry27sm so much better looking than both the older and newer one.
What a beautiful car!
Well I was trying to say that it's most commonly used there and their Diesel fuel is cheaper than Gasoline.
that colour is beautiful on that sku
holy sh**.
what a breathtaking car!
Yes
lpg kills performance dramatically. yes diesel cars are more expensive, but they do more mpg and diesel costs a little bit less than petrol
the predecessor was hardly feminin! that thing was curvy and muscular, this is is fucking beautiful aswell
cb7pwn this one is more muscular. I think much nicer as it’s more aggressive
Wow. Its amazing in Red !!
license plate says CLS backwards
@reevsaj I know. Mercedes nowdays always have, when you go up in the lineup, a V8 engine, which gulps down fuel.
He looks so young, but the car, wow.
I had 2 new M-Bs. They were pleasant cars to drive but both had many service and repair issues, even within the first few months of ownership. I NEED MONEY!!!!!!
He's the Editor in Chief of Autoexpress.
cool review, i like it
@teinflex Because they're all mercedes cars. They're suppose to look alike.
why mat reviews the same car twice? once for Carbuyer and sencod for Autoexpress? :/
