This brings up another good point……a lot of people dont realize how much stamina it takes out of a person every time they land on their back. It really does drain you just a little when your body makes contact with the ground. The impact, have someone elses body on top of yours, and then either needing to fight your way up, or just getting up on a break, has a definite effect.
and it’s very demoralizing. Even if it’s not MMA where you have to worry about submission fighting or GNP, you feel like you’re not in control
Might remember this wrong but I remember a bouncer or fighter, not sure, talking about bar fights. About how for 90% of them all he had to do was dodge/avoid for 30 secs and then the other guy would be gassed, at which point most of them would change their minds.
More importantly if you fall on a surface that isn’t a cushioned spring loaded ring (even dirt) it’s going to hurt. And it’s gonna knock the wind out of you
Btw, mad props to both fighters. The amount of stamina, especially in these long rounds, is amazing.
Another great Sanda content, Jerry.
MORE PLEASE!
the throw that the sanda girl uses is a head and arm throw. it's usually very risky and more common in the women's division popularized by ronda rousey. it's called a koshi guruma in judo
Head slips out pretty easy probably
@@KingoftheJiangl yeah also youre giving up position you can get body locked then mat returned or ura nage'd backwards. maybe even suplex. also much worse for shorter fighters
just my opinion (judo taxonomy might as well be a college course), but this may be slightly more like what I recognize as a kubi nage. In my mind, kubi nage adds the tai otoshi element and rolls the opponent over whereas koshi guruma is more like a hip throw
the nice thing about these kinds of throws (throws from the neck) is that they land in a really nice kesa
It’s really nice to the sanda elements of sanda represented. You can see the huge differences between MT and sanda, even if they are somewhat related. In some sanda fights against MT it can be hard to tell which is the MT fighter. I’m perennially surprised that sanda doesn’t catch on more in MMA, particularly for jiujitsu specialists, but that may have more to do with the business of MMA (strikers are more popular and ultimately make more money via other channels than grapplers) than with the effectiveness of sanda.
Sanda doesnt catch more in MMA has nothing to do with business' of MMA. It has to do with sanda is just muay thai with some wrestling and judo and these styles have been around in MMA for decades now. Sanda doesnt offer anything new. You said it yourself "hard to tell" when both styles are pretty much the same.
@@Muay-MMA I said I could see the huge differences between MT and sanda; I was speaking of a gradual convergence of the styles, at least to my lay eyes.
I think what sanda has to offer is a built-in specialization of transitions from striking to takedowns, so I could see it being a useful addition for jiujitsu fighters or possibly wrestlers who wanted to go into MMA. Neither wrestling, judo, or jiujitsu consistently train transitioning from striking to takedowns. Combat sambo might be the exception, but then, it's not clear to me that "combat sambo" means anything meaningfully different than just saying "MMA."
This is a slightly different question of why don't existing sanda fighters go into MMA more often. There the grappling talent is so much higher that they may not even be able to reliable pull off their takedowns against wrestling specialists, or potentially even worse, it could just be putting them in the direct line of fire of jiujitsu specialists.
The issue is that Sanda isn't popular enough to get more representatives, The only one I can think of is Cung Le, and he hasn't fought in years. Honestly it would be awesome to see more Sanda representatives in MMA.
@@gladiumcaeli yeah, Cung Le was the phenom the sport needed but he was just a little too ahead of his time. He was aging out just as MMA was becoming mainstream and I don't think he ever sufficiently developed his jiujitsu in order to leverage his epic takedowns in high-level MMA (although he was an extremely good wrestler outside of sanda). He dominated smaller promotions like Strikeforce but I think he was just a little past his prime by the time he gets into the UFC. He's the one that got me interested in sanda (an acquaintance of mine was a student in his gym in Cali before he got really famous).
@@elenchus Yeah, I think so too, he was a bit old by the time he got into the ufc, You trained Sanda? that's pretty cool, I always wonder if they made Sanda an Olympic sport if that would make it more popular. I am aware that the Olympics watered some fighting sports down but it can help more people get familiarized with the sport. One other thing I did notice is you won't find much on youtube when it comes to Sanda, unlike BJJ, like influencers, high-level practitioners or even training DVDs (like Kicking Revolution for TKD, 67 Throws of the Kodokan for Judo, etc). There is one site where I did find some Sanda contents which was on the Bilibili website but it's all in Chinese.
I took a real interest in this one because I'm a big Sanda fan. It is not to be underestimated. I learned about this style through watching Cung Le. Absolutely legendary Sanda fighter. He could blast a dude half away across the ring with one of those turning side kicks. That's the same kick Joe Rogan made famous from Taekwondo. Cung was so good that he routinely intercepted people's attacks and slammed them like a fucking meteor. Excellent and well rounded style.
Sanda destroys muay thai 9 out of 10 times under mma rules.

Cung le is trash lol, guy is a overhyped crybaby
You should also check out Zabit Magomedsharipov who was the best Sanda fighter in the UFC
@@vascosyogaundkampfkunst8042 that's wild. Zabit had very few fights. To look past the other Sanda fighters who are actual champions in the UFC is WILD
@@cagemachine2492 like who?
It’s known in the MMA community that Muay Thai’s biggest weakness has always been wrestling takedowns.
Even in the early UFC days, elite strikers kept getting ragdolled by wrestlers, and here we see the same happen here.
Sanda’s another underrated style I love much like Savate
Sanda girl could benefit from more conditioning while muay thai girl could have worked on more aggressive leg kicks imo but both gave it their all. Hopefully not too much permanent damage was done as it seemed drawn out
it's important to note you cant grab the legs in kod rules unless the other opponent kicks or checks or knees and you catch it which puts sanda at disadvantage. i had that problem sparring in kod rules as well
@@Yautah yeah ik who youre talking about but idk how that pertains to my comment
@@SS.LiuRyan you're absolutely right. I might have misclicked somewhere, but I'm just gonna blame TH-cam.
No elbows mixed rules right? The Thai clinch works well when there's elbows involved, kind of a hard counter to hip/shoulder throw tyoes
4:40 MT girl survives the combos. Definitely a tough competitor. Sanda girl is chipping away with the jab. Even the back fist is landing in round 3. I do agree, that last round was not really necessary and the officials should have just called it. MT was too tough and Sanda girl got gassed. Otherwise it would have been a KO in round 2.
Limitation of muay Thai in this environment is that although there are many effective sweeps in muay Thai they are not used to throws using the hip like seoi nage or uchi mata, or reaps like ko uchi gari as they are banned in muay Thai. So what they do not know they don't know how to defend...that sounded a bit like Mr Miyagi.
Honestly if you don’t know how to defend basic throw you should stick to Muay Thai
Where would one even train sanda? From what I've heard it's not practised outside of university teams
Muay Thai is the premier striking method today, the only way i have seen them regularly defeated was when put against grapplers.
I would love to sit at a table and idealise a stronger striking martial art. One that could defeat them at their own rules. Lethwei has headbutts ,yet that is not enough to regularly have an advantage.
Are there any more parts of the body we can learn to strike with, after the 9 we already know?
The only thing i can think of is foreams and shoulders.
Brachial (forearm) strikes and conditioning, as well as shoulder strikes, are widely regarded as common in kungfu.
I am in Taiwan, what gym is Sanda girl from. Would love to go do some training there.
It probably shows it in the original video. Definitely give them some love. Video is linked in the description.
looks like a kubi nage at 5:45, the throw you were asking about
Muay Thai girl is an absolute tank
Sanda and Shootboxing are awesome :)
This sanda was awesome
Let’s go, Sanda representation
Wait... now I recognize them. That was my Sanda coach! (Fight Station)
That’s awesome!
First of all, my hat to both of these young ladies. Do you know how much stamina you need to go in long rounds like these young ladies have done? Sanda style looks like a very interesting art to study and practice. Muay Thai is still a powerful striking art. But Muay Thai girl is is thinking way to much what she going to do, l don't know is little experience. But look at Sanda girl, even that she is a good fighter but in like this you need to work on your stamina as well. Either way good fight. 👏👏👏👏👏
AYYYY SOME SANDA W'S COMING BACK
Jerry, I much prefer these trained fighter style-vs-style matchups to the untrained "enthusiasts".
Does it seem that sanda girl is a weight claas above the MT? (No need to be smart or sarcastic. I am just asking.)
Ya'll should watch lerdsila fighting sanda fighters in china.
Sport with throws outthrows sport without throws
Half the commenters: 😮
Wait where is the muay thai girl?
she was in black and red
@@elenchus That guy was a woman?
Muay Thai Girl had zero plan, she just stood there. Sanda Girl got gassed bad. not enough push kicks on either side.
Muay Thai girl needs more low leg kicks and elbows.
Yes, there are trips and takedowns in Muay Thai. Too bad most Western Muay Thai fighters do Not train trips and takedowns.
This category (between Muay Thai striking and MMA) will bring out full Muay Thai techniques.
One Championship need to bring this category into their fights.
With sanda girl gassed, third round is Muay Thai's punchers chance. With conditioning longer fights allow grit and heart to show. So even though this fight was one sided. Muay thai girl still had some fight in her. One good shot and muay thai girl could have stolen it.
We want boxing girl vs boxing girl...
Can they not elbow isnt that why they got elbow pads, muay thai girl should've used elbows if it was allowed
black tanktop looked like she just came exhausted from a previous fight or something. no energy
Sanda girl was so lucky her opponent wans't skilled enough, because from mid 2nd round a decent opponent could have had her down easily, she really lacks conditioning
nah bro sanda is better than muay thai go watch sanda vs muay thai fights sanda fighters did well with muay thai fighters even without using wrestling or judo
@@joe-mama45884 Good dreams. That's why sanda is popular in MMA and UFC right? lol
The lack of conditioning might have to do with Sanda's rule, 2 min rounds best out of 3. Compared to Muay Thai 3, 3 min rounds. More Sanda representatives in MMA would be great.
yea bro telling that girl was lucky but he didint see the sanda fighters who fighted in muay thai rules and won without even takedown @@Muay-MMA
@@Muay-MMAThat's not a great argument.
0:05 that's a muay thai girl .... ? that's barely a girl
Are you blind this so called muay thai girl is actually a dude/trans , that is why he is not getting tired...
Boring. Just go with MMA rules and continue fighting on the ground. Seems like the sanda always just throws when she cant out fight on the feet, then the fight just stops and keeps repeating.
Looked like Muay Thai girl went in there with 6 months of training
Have you ever heard sanda legend LIU HAILONG . i heard he defeated 3 muay thai fighters in one night .
Jia Aoqi vs. Tawanchai is a better example of a sanda v MT upset. Liu Hailong is overrated outside sanda--he has very legit credentials in that sport, but in cross-style stuff, his best win was a washed up Robert Kaennorasing
