Hi! Thanks to you, i fixed a similar problem with my fx-992s. In my case, the problem was found on the LCD side: some of ribbon cable pins has lost a contact with the LCD. I fixed it using the soldering iron. At first, i fold a piece of aluminium foil to make 4 layers. Then this foil have been applied above the ribbon cable upon the area, where it's connected with the LCD. Then i heat the foil using my soldering iron (150 C degrees), and following its tip i move some silicone card to apply some pressure. My fx-992s is working again! Thanks a lot from Ukraine!
Holy Crap! My TI 30Xa had something like this displayed .... didddiii instead of 888888. I was missing an attachment to my soldering iron so I carefully pressed the iron on a small wad of aluminum foil against the ribbon area. I carefully ran it across a few times. IT WORKED. I was about to chuck my 40 year old calculator before running across your video. I know it's only a $10-15 calculator, but it made my day. Thanks Dude!
Just found an old scientific calculator I had in 1998. Like yours the screen is missing segments. Though far more than yours.I have a heat gun so I'll try a similar approach before binning it. Thanks for making the video. It'll get a thumbs up from me. Maybe my daughter Jessica will end up using the same calculator in years to come.
Man you saved me ! I've had my Casio fx85WA since 2010 and it had become so dear to me... and I've just fixed it by watching your video. I couldn't be more grateful ! Big up from Algeria.
Just tried this with the iFixit iOpener, first time I was too quick to apply pressure, second time i had something else apply pressure and i let it sit for 10 minutes, then applied some extra pressure with my fingers afterwards and VOILA! I could really feel the contact point being hotter after letting it sit with the iOpener on it. Thx for inspiring and doing the quick show and tell!
I bought a second hand calculator for NZD2 yesterday to give to my student. Battery was flat. Upon opening and changing, found the characters were not displaying properly across the whole screen. I used your technic with a hair dryer and that did the trick! Thank you so much for the tip: I will make a student happy, and I have saved e-waste! Nga mihi nui
I replace a new polarized film on a CASIO FX 880P, with almost 30 years old! but have problems with some segments not working , your video help me to fix this problem , now i have 100% beautiful screen working like new!! Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge! regards from Brazil!
I think I've the same problem with my Casio 850 P and with a CASIO Z-1 I hope to be able to repair it: any supplemental advice before making a wrong step?
I have exact same VPAM calculator with the same issue! Thanks for the video! I've had the calculator since 1996 and learned everything from complex numbers to trig using it.
Thanks a lot sir for an idea! I have tried heating and pressing but did no good to me (i guess there isn't much adhesive left on my board), so i tried a different approach. I took a piece of soft material and placed it on the top of that problematic spot. It works like a charm!
What is the name of the tool you used? Is it a soldering iron, but you’re only using the hot air and not making any contact with the components? If I don’t have one, would a hairdryer work?
It's called a hot air rework station. A har dryer probably won't get hot enough. But a hot air tool you can buy at a hardware store or maybe harbor freight might...I'm not sure

I just found 2 Casio CQ-82 alarm clock calculators. Boxed & probably never used. I stuck 2 batteries in but the displays are very faded. Is there a way to repair or replace them? They look ultra retro cool & I'd happily give one to someone who could fix one up for me.
Does anyone know what the correct name for that ribbon cable is called, I have a damaged unit that needs a new cable, I can't seem to search for it because I don't know what it's called.
Firstly, thanks for the video. However, I'll let you know if that if you use a potato laptop, the 720p60 is unplayable. TH-cam has, I believe, stopped distributing 720p30 videos where 720p60 is available. There are firefox add-ons that occasionally work, but they're unreliable. Since we're talking about reviving old hardware I figured I'd let you know (and yes, I realize it's 2 years ago but whatever).
@@SevenFortyOne Do you mean by clicking the gearwheel? If so, it doesn't have 720p30 as an option if 720p60 exists, and sometimes 480 (or even 360 if 480 is not present, which happens) doesn't have the appropriate resolution for certain videos. However, if firefox has a way to default to 720p30 on youtube that would be awesome... I _assume_ you mean the first thing, though.
Lol mine just went out as well (for the left segment on the first digit(most very right side digit) I was looking to buy a new one and then had a thought that maybe this was a common issue with an easy fix And so I went to TH-cam, and wallah

I've been using a similar model for 20 years. Good equipment I used it in high school and college. My son now uses it after replacing the battery
Fixed my Casio FX-83WA display using this method. Thanks for making the video.
Thanks so much. I need to bring back one of my vintage collectables back to life. Never had this problem with my Slide Rules or Abacus..

Great! Just fixed my ~25 years old Casio fx-85WA that way -- using my bulky hot air gun. ;-)
Y si le compro una pila nueva a mi calculadora vieja podría funcionar de nuevo ? Es que se le ven los números borrosos
Do you have any fix available for broken or damaged ribbon
Thanks for the video. I was trying to do the same. Good to know, I was doing it the right way. Just need more heat!
