I just finished the book, and I have to say it explains the dower mood of it's creator during this interview. There truly is nothing that's particularly "fun" about this book, and I can't imagine what it's like for an artist as sensitive as BWS to carry that story in his head for so long. With that said, Monsters is unequivocally one of the best pieces of graphic literature to ever grace the medium. Truly incredible work and I hope it's creator can gain some piece of mind having finally released it.
I could not put this bloody beautiful beast of a book down. I was utterly captivated by it in every sense. It was beguiling, mesmerising and absolutely unpredictable from beginning to end. This deserves to absolutely cement BWS' place as one of our finest storytellers. Worth the wait. Worth every damned second of the wait. Magnum Opus barely begins to cover the scale of what this amazing artist has created.
So true. It's a miracle of storytelling in any form, let alone graphic novels. Glad you enjoyed the interview. Sub to the channel - we have some awesome names coming up.
You probably dont give a shit but if you guys are bored like me atm then you can watch all of the new movies and series on instaflixxer. I've been watching with my girlfriend during the lockdown =)
reviewing this wonderful interview. I really hope old Barry has had the curiosity to look how the market has changed in the last 20 years where most of the interest and creativity and even sells many times are in comics that are totally realistic, humaine, nuanced, that range all kinds of genres, and where french comics, american, comis, japaneses commics have continued to influence each other. I would advice him to read so many thing that might bring him the energy to do a last thing not so dark and sad as monsters. something joyful. and maybe, british.
My buddy was a fan in 1970s so we ditched school in Wyoming and took a bus to New York and located the studio and knocked on the door and Barry let us in and told us not to touch anything and we talked a bit and were on our way but been a fan since.
My number one go-to artist. In many ways BWS is the reason I do what I do. His pre-ralphaelite style and wonderful storytelling has been key to all of my comic book ventures. For years I searched for news of him after he "disappeared". Nothing. So eventually I gave up. I assumed he was done with the industry and just stepped away. I was aware of Monsters but had no idea he was still working on it. Great to see a recent interview like this!
Great interview thank u so much for doing this. Mr Barry is a huge inspiration to me. He is very detail oriented and careful - very deliberate and all about business from the looks of it. I am the same - youll never see me in any fun or smiling tbh - I too have a mindset where yes u have to be kind of 'crazy' - i dedicated 10 years of my life to any free moment, working on 1 script. It's the script for my comic. The dedication one has to have is enormous and im only now drawing it. I look up to Mr Barry bc he is one of the few who rly stuck with it and showed the honesty of that journey here. Sometimes u fall off, then u get back on - there's pain - there's frustration - and then of course - u just DO THE WORK. You may want to get 3 pages done in a day but only get 2 panels done. That's just what it is and u have to accept it like a man and continue on the grueling path. I can sense he has that quality of keeping on - He reminds me a bit of Stanley Kubrick in this way. I'm so happy for all his success. Hope i can one day achieve big things with my comic and get to thank him-
Brian, well done. That must have been a hard interview at times but Barry's slow considered responses came through. He's obviously of the old school - not shallow instant glibness. Thanks for sharing this.
Got, "Monsters," and it's a gem. I got it, primarily, because I'm working on my own graphic novel, since I'm a traditional graphic illustrator who works in pen and ink. I, therefore, sought out Graphic novels rendered in black and white ink drawings and stumbled onto "Monsters". I downloaded a sample of it through my Kindle account, and saw mind-blowing art that reminded me, somewhat, of my own drawings. So I got it, and read it through in one day. A Great book.
Awesome interview. Glad to hear how BWS is doing. I pre-ordered Monsters in Oct and am patiently waiting for it to ship. Barry was very gracious when I met him in 2000 in Orlando. He is one of my all time favorite artists!
I'm thrilled to see such an in-depth interview with someone who has been such an inspiration to me for years, and who is notoriously difficult to get hold of. I'm not sure he realises just how good he is, and just how much money he could be making. Very much an old school artist, and a fabulous interview. Thank you for this - Monsters is an amazing book!
Met BWS at a NY comic con in the early 80's . Would you believe there was only 1 other fan at his table ? I am an immense fan I used write to him in the 70's . I am so happy this has been published (already ordered ) after all the teasing on the website for all these years . CONGRATS BARRY... WELL DONE .
There are many stories that Barry tells that I had never heard of before or had only heard a part of before. This is an amazing interview with one of the top talents that the industry has managed to produce. Thank you for posting this. RICK
Wow. Thank you so much for this! Monsters is among my most anticipated books ever and being able to see/hear BWS is such an incredible thing. One of the very best artists/storytellers in comics.
Wow, this interview was so great. I was searching for BWS interviews and came across it, and didn’t know about Monsters. Thank you so much to both of you!
I just saw this video pop up randomly on TH-cam. I was a huge fan of the artists from back in the day and this Monsters book by Barry looks likes a epic piece of graphic literature.
Thanks for watching! Monsters *is* an incredibly rich, disturbing, and brilliant piece of fiction - graphic or otherwise - but Barry is a master illustrator and it shows in this book. Definitely check it out.
Great interview, but I think it would greatly benefit from the insertion of images from the books being discussed. (You could have one of those small video inserts of the interview in the lower right corner to keep the flow going)
These interviews are pretty off the cuff, wide-ranging, and shot live. It would be pretty difficult to have enough material handy AND keep it synced with the discussion. Thanks for watching, though. Glad you enjoyed it.
Comics are art and story, a visual narrative form on the page... if you are both a writer and an artist, comics is the perfect medium. What Jack Kirby was to Barry, BWS, Bernie Wrightson, Alan Moore, and Neil Gaiman were to me... I can't wait to read Monsters!
Barry Smith's lived in the USA (presumably) since forever and is still such a Brit. It is great fun to watch Brian Hibbs wrestle with the characteristic understatement that goes along with that.
As Doc Frankenstein said: IT'S ALIIIIVE!!!!! waiting decades to this day. If Mr. BWS read this, wich I doubt: your legions of fans are still here, and many have "tried" to learn your good lessons in their own careers.
Brian from Comix Experience has been around for a long time and knows a lot of folks. In the end, the stars aligned for this interview and we were so stoked to have him, Thanks for watching!
Sua obra não prova que ele é vivo, prova que tinha uma obra não publicada, e hoje resolveram publicar, mas ele tá morto, enterrado e com tumulo, insano mas pe a verdade. Quando Barry, fara uma life, eu estou vivo!!! :)
We were so honored to have him interview with us, and the writing and the art in this book are more than a testament to his great career and singular talent.
A writer and artist like BWS has been trying to bring nuance and character and heart to mainstream comics for 50+ years and in a lot of ways? The fruits of that labour exist in the YA market more than anywhere else. It's a gigantic market-far outselling the superhero genre-and honestly people need to know that.
I just finished the book, and I have to say it explains the dower mood of it's creator during this interview. It was definitely a tough interview , but the work is so outstanding.
Thanks for watching!

Wow!! Video interview with BWS. This is something rare and special. Thank you. .
I’m a young artist and only just discovering Mr. Barry Windsor Smith! I find his work so inspiring. Very glad to see this interview 😁
This might be his only on camera interview, incredible talent
right? it's so hard to find this guy on video.
There are some snippets of him on the Jack Kirby documentary
I think hes going to be surprised by how well his book will sell very soon.
yeah....i got the book today just bc its BWS art
lets hope so this guy deserves it...
You probably dont give a shit but if you guys are bored like me atm then you can watch all of the new movies and series on instaflixxer. I've been watching with my girlfriend during the lockdown =)
@Walker Miller definitely, been using instaflixxer for months myself =)
I've already read it twice now. It's epic.
All hail Barry Windsor-Smith! That last answer was killer.
So good to see and hear from BWS. One of a kind talent. Love hearing the stories. Great moderation as well. Thank you!
I’m ready for that “Making Of” MONSTERS book he wants to release!
Thank you for this!! Its great to see Barry after all these years !

Cannot wait to get this book! This was a heartwarming, although slightly bittersweet interview. Thanks Brian for bringing it to us!

BWS is a monster talent and has produced some of the most visually arresting and interesting images to ever grace the medium of comics.
I've got my order in I can't wait. Thanks for a great interview, it was so insightful. Smith makes a great interview there's no bullshit to him.

He’s known to be a difficult guy, thankfully he seemed to be patient on this occasion 👍🏼

Just got this Monsters graphic novel delivered to me today! Mostly because of this video I decided to purchase a copy!
Hope you enjoy it! It's such a great book.
There are many stories that Barry tells that I had never heard of before or had only heard a part of before. This is an amazing interview with one of the top talents that the industry has managed to produce. Thank you for posting this. RICK

It's heartbreakingly good.

Wow! SO glad to help introduce it to you - it's a legendary piece of work.
Thanks for watching.

Love the hat.

I would buy a book with all uncollected Monsters pages. I would also buy that Paradoxman HC that still hasn't been released, as far as I know.
Absolute legend!
So dang cool! BWS!!!
one question: after sometime, anyone knows how much did it sell in the US market? I hope it really was succesful. cheers.
Love you Barry!
Barry Smith's lived in the USA (presumably) since forever and is still such a Brit. It is great fun to watch Brian Hibbs wrestle with the characteristic understatement that goes along with that.
Yes, I assumed he'd have lost most of his British accent by now (I always wondered how many understood the joke behind Gorblimey press! :-) )
As Doc Frankenstein said: IT'S ALIIIIVE!!!!! waiting decades to this day. If Mr. BWS read this, wich I doubt: your legions of fans are still here, and many have "tried" to learn your good lessons in their own careers.
100% worth the wait.
"Two countries separated by the same language"
I don't think BWS understands how amazing of an artist he is.
Oh, he knows....lol.
I mean no offense, but how did you get BWS to do an interview and why hasn’t he done any other interviews / why is this the only interview he’s given?
Brian from Comix Experience has been around for a long time and knows a lot of folks. In the end, the stars aligned for this interview and we were so stoked to have him,
Thanks for watching!
wow, wow...
Glad you liked it!
1.18 46….well said.
Pergunte a Barry, sumir por mas de 10 anos, e voltar do nada. :(
He drew Conan The Barbarian for a time and that's why I know who he is.
Sua obra não prova que ele é vivo, prova que tinha uma obra não publicada, e hoje resolveram publicar, mas ele tá morto, enterrado e com tumulo, insano mas pe a verdade. Quando Barry, fara uma life, eu estou vivo!!! :)
I've just ordered his book and can't wait to lose myself in it but it's heartbreaking to see this genius of a man clearly suffering from dementia.
We were so honored to have him interview with us, and the writing and the art in this book are more than a testament to his great career and singular talent.
Todos dizem e Barry Smith morreu, nunca vi anúncio de sua morte, ele é vivo, talvez escondido, aparece, ninguém acredita, Barry é morto, como mudar isso??? Barry is alive - we interviewed him. This was no fake.??
O fans deles acreditam nisso. Não eu.
Talking to Barry Windsor Smith and cheerleading YA graphic novels..y

He actually made a good point about YA comics.
I wonder if it was Peter David who lifted his Hulk idea 🤔
Bill Mantlo
It was Bill Mantlo.
So fucking funny "i dont enjoy this work at all!"
Absolutely dreadful interview.
Sorry you didn't like it, but thanks for stopping by!
Every bit helps.
