I'm located near Boston and have planespotted there many times. British Airways flies the A380 in for the spring and summer. Emirates used to fly it in and have promised to bring it back sometime. And now Lufthansa might be flying here as well. That could be up to three A380s a day - not bad for the size market it is!

No, even before COVID, Emirates' A380 only showed up in Boston until late Jan. 2020. At that time, COVID was not a thing at all.

It´s not that Lufthansa might be flying the A380 there. Lufthansa WILL be flying the A380 there. That was planned pre pandemic and it´s just consequent to proceed with these plans.

Why is it so hard to get that having 3 A380s ready does NOT mean that they´re only commited to 3? They are planning with all three routes this summer, just not all of them from the start of the A380 operations. And they do need 4 A380s therefore.
And Carsten Spohr himself said that let alone due to operational reasons, they will need to bring back more than 4 A380s. That will then be the case during winter 2023 and summer 2024.
And no, unless all 8 A380s return, D-AIML will not come back. Following D-AIMM will be D-AIMN, followed by D-AIMH as the fourth A380 and the fifth will then be D-AIMB in January 2024.

There will be a fourth (D-AIMH) returning during summer, you can expect that to be the case by late July, early August. And it will not be D-AIML returning as 3rd A380, but D-AIMN.
On top of that, there will at least be a fifth A380 returning to Munich by January 2024. That´ll be the equally named D-AIMB.
And spoiler alert: You can expect Lufthansa to announce the comeback of all 8 A380s within the next few months.

    • @_daxre
      @_daxre ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@r12004rewy Well to be honest... there´s even a small (SMALL!!) chance of the remaining 6 A380s returning or even few of them (like sale and lease back for a few years).
The (probably 8) A380s that are getting reactivated are solely used to boost capacity from Munich airport as we approach pre pandemic levels.
There will be 5 A346 flying from Munich this summer and 5 from Frankfurt (and these 5 are the first ones to operate as compensation for 779 delays). By the end of this year Airbus should restart A359 deliveries to Lufthansa. These will be based in Munich and will replace the A340-600 there. Doesn´t mean that these A346 will leave the fleet however. They will then be deployed from Frankfurt (10 A346 from Frankfurt summer 2024) to even more replace the 779. And the A346 fleet is supported in compensating 779 delays by the 744. However these might face their cycle limit if Boeing has to further delay the 779. And that would be the point for Lufthansa to return 6 or few of the 6 A380s they sold to Airbus as there is no more reserve available then these aircraft. The 7 (out of 17 pre pandemic A346) that will remain in Teruel have already been used for spare parts and cannot return (sadly...)

Well, the source for JFK, BOS and LAX is Carsten Spohr.
And, MUC-BOS with the A380 was planned for summer 2020 if the pandemic didn´t hit. MUC-MIA is not operated during the summer season but has a good chance to see the LH A380 once again during winter.
ORD won´t see the Lufthansa A380 as the first thing Lufthansa will do once demand justifies it will be to bring back their second daily MUC-ORD flight. That is currently planned to be the case from somewhere early summer. Currently there is 1 daily MUC.ORD flight operated by Lufthansa. There´s just not enough demand to add a second daily and change one to the A380 on top of that.

@@johniii8147 The other way would be to reconfigure for maximum capacity charter operations such as MH proposed use for Haj flights. Again it is a small niche but Condor could take over some for charter packages to Florida and the Carribbean. Scoot could also take over some reconfigured SQ A380s for SIN-LHR, SIN-CDG, and SIN-MUC in a low-cost operation. One A380 with 800+ passengers is more profitable than two 777X provided you fill it to capacity and the reconfiguration cost can be kept down by cannibalism of seats, toilets and additional safety equipment from surplus aircraft within the airline group.

@@johniii8147 According to Hifly's media release, the A380 operations were successful and the lease was not renewed due to COVID impacts. Also Hifly's A380 only had 471 passengers in a 3 class layout which is well below the 800+ passengers needed to make low-cost and charter operations of the A380 profitable. The maximum certified capacity is 853 so Hifly's configuration is well below what they could have carried if they hadn't over-allocated space for premium passengers they were not seeing in their ticket sales. Ultimately the only ways to make a profit from the A380 are either to go for premium passengers paying premium prices for a top of the market product or go full low-cost with as many economy passengers as possible with no frills just the same as Ryanair and Easyjet do with their single aisle operations.

It's been looked at and the numbers just don't add up to make it profitable or sustainable. The costs of reconfiguration, operational costs, and limits of where it can operate simply don't make it feasible. Revenue also would not be high enough for such high density. The 380 only works in highly premium markets (ie LHR).

@@johniii8147 That's wrong... About half of Lufthansa's A380s are wearing the new livery. They only stated that at the current time they did not plan to do so (detailed plans for the rest of the existing fleet are also outstanding).
The information SimpleFlying gave in the video is also not 100% correct. Lufthansa will definetely bring back 5x A380s until summer flightplan 2024 and is currently checking to reactivate all their 8x remaining A380s.
