  • Alan Watts in this lecture (on Hinduism) shares some insights on how we teach our children and raise them. Eventually, the school prepares the children to be everything and nothing. With the schooling system, it is too late for children to attain real mastery.
    Speaker: Alan Watts (1915 - 1973)

School keeps the kids away from his father.. when his father is no more he would have learnt nothing. But everything from a father written in books

As much as I love Alan Watts, he isnt very correct here.
    - School could be optional and that might be his best point about it, society demands people to be in a certain way but his other option isnt much better. School isnt really a soulless place where there is no value, school is by far the best place where children can meet each other and play.
    - When children are forced to work early, they are robbed of innocence. They are forced to perform a duty which they dont wanna do because they wanna play and have fun and not do a soulless boring mediocre job. It might be interesting for some children to work earlier but they shouldnt be forced and could at any moment stop, because otherwise it becomes a drag, which Alan knows how destructive it is.
    - Opression: when someone is forced to grow with the same people in a lifestyle they dont want and only do it for obligation, they also seaze to be children. School is the best way for a normative consistent safe lifestyle which children can grow and have fun and live their lives, because most people who really lived and enjoyed their lives done going to school in a capitalist society.
    - Lack of diversity and stagnation: when everyone lives by the same way stuck by the same routine, where nothing changes and there is no dynamism, it becomes terrible. Most people who lived like the ancients did, didnt do it on purpose.
    - Children entertainment: children play because they are unaware of the brutality of the real world, people who lived by the ancients did surely werent very fun jovial people.
    - Past romanticizing: as much as Alan Watts was correct in pointing out the simplicity, connecting and honesty of the past, it doesnt negate the fact that people had to survive and didnt think about anything else. Childhood didnt exist and children were seen as mini adults, disrespecting their own development.
    - Of all the talks I heard of him, this made it more explicit his own epoch, his time. Today entertainment isnt adult imitation anymore, children just liked to romanticize everything, and as much as work and play could be the same thing, it can never be pure play due to the obligation people must have with their work, everything which is forced and wasnt choosed ceazes to be fun and everyone will hate it.

I'm a teacher. I carefully let students know about th eSumerian Cuneiform tablets. I show them what and who is depicted on our ancient buildings Enki/Osiris and Enlil/Seth. I show them the ancient techniques now lost, of shaping hard stone, and the puyramids .. and ask them how it can be so?

Your wrong about children playing because they aren't aware of the brutality of the real world. Adults play, constantly. They just aren't aware of it.

@@carly582 I agree with you, I changed a lot since then.
Children actually know what everything is all about, the magic of life and the beauty of the world, but then they get corrupted by adults who push cynical worldviews, making them disapointed and resentful at the world, even though the world is insanely magical and Divine, in ways we have never thought about.
