I’m a tough old guy. I’ve been in street fights and I’ve wrestled wild dogs. And I’ll tell you something. Joni Mitchell’s voice is so exquisite that it makes me cry.

We are of the same generation; I too am 71. I wore out my Ladies of the Canyon LP, playing it so much. I realized that could happen because when I tried to play it on a friend's record player, it jumped and skipped all over. I'd worn the grooves down to almost nothing.

So many people hear the Judy Collins version of this song, and good as it may be, but the vocal tone of Joni's is sublime. Salute to an incredible talent, we owe it to our generations to come to keep her immortal in music.

    • @Vinterfrid
      @Vinterfrid 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Well, since Judy Collin's version was the first many of us consider it to be the original - and also the best version. Joni Mitchell indeed has a great voice, but so has Judy Collins. Anyway, it is a great song in both versions.

    • @NickSBailey
      @NickSBailey 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

it'll never be the original really whether it feels like it is or not, that does seem to be an effect people often prefer the first version they hear, I'm too young to remember either version so I just listened to both, I prefer joni's as her vocal has more dyanmics and expression

The only thing I know about life is I don’t want to hurt others for any reason. I don’t want to add pain to someone’s life, especially since we never know what someone is really going through inside.

Friends have died too. 2 close friends under 25. Death is painful. Life is beautiful. Get a checkup with your doctor every year. Stop smoking. Cut back on booze. No drugs, unless medical pot. Stunning song. Joni is a true legend. One of the purist forces of singer songwriting in this last 6 decades. She was performing about the same year I was born in 1971. Her music reflects a much simpler time, where everything seemed possible. When I listen to it, I may as well be stepping into a time machine. Thanks for the time machine Joni.

I'm a father with two grandchildren in my late 50s now and just took a quick nap and woke up suddenly humming the song in my head from my sleep then searched on TH-cam the only lines I recall about the song from when I was kid then Voila! Got it! Then looped the video while listening to it tearing up. "I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHY, AT ALL!" NO pun intended. I grew up loving heavy rock then eventually playing drums in a band but this song just popped out my mind just now from decades of not hearing this song. Never knew the title but perhaps my mom would have told me if she were alive.

I only really discovered Joni's music in earnest around the time her Hits/Misses compilation came out in the mid 1990s. I had heard a few songs on the oldies radio like Big Yellow Taxi and Help Me as a teenager in the 1990s. But nothing prepared me for the absolute sheer mastery of her craft. She is, frankly, in a league all of her own. And the world is a much better place with Joni and her music in it.

Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
    And feather canyons everywhere
    Looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun
They rain and they snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
    It's cloud's illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all
Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way that you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way
But now it's just another show
And you leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
    Don't give yourself away
I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
    It's love's illusions that I recall
    I really don't know love
Really don't know love at all
Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say, "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way
Oh, but now old friends they're acting strange
And they shake their heads, they tell me that I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
    In living every day
I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
    It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all
    It's life's illusions that I recall
    I really don't know life
I really don't know life at all
