- You're listening to the 2021 remaster for Joni Mitchell - "Both Sides Now" originally from the album 'Clouds.' THE REPRISE ALBUMS (1968-1971) will be available on June 25 in 4-CD and 4-LP 180-gram vinyl versions, as well as digitally. Joni Mitchell released Blue, concluding her prolific four album run for Reprise Records with an album considered by many to be one of the greatest of all time. Its stirring, confessional songs have been celebrated by music lovers and critics alike for decades while inspiring a wide variety of artists as diverse as Prince and Taylor Swift. Even today, its stature as a masterpiece continues to grow. Just last year, the album was named #3 on Rolling Stone’s list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.”
To celebrate the album’s 50th anniversary, Rhino is releasing THE REPRISE ALBUMS (1968-1971), the next installment of the Joni Mitchell Archives series, featuring newly remastered versions of Blue (1971) and the three albums that came before it: Song To A Seagull (1968), Clouds (1969), and Ladies Of The Canyon (1970). In the case of Song To A Seagull, the original mix has been recently updated by Mitchell and mixer Matt Lee.
The cover art for THE REPRISE ALBUMS (1968-1971) features a previously unseen self-portrait Mitchell sketched during the time period. The collection also includes an essay by Grammy winning singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, another artist who’s been influenced greatly by Mitchell.

私は日本人 当時13歳 疲れきった誇り高いアメリカの人々の心にこの曲は優しく入り込み幾度の涙💧を誘った事でしょう😢どんなに声高な反戦歌より厳しく強いメッセージです❤
My boyfriend and I both cried listening to Joni perform this song at the 2024 Grammys!!! She is an iconic humble legend… and she outclassed everyone on stage tonight ! Proof that words are by far more powerful than all the showy bells and whistles ! Thank you for modeling what’s possible ! ❤
Best part of the Grammys program
Best part. 😢
❤ She's a golden gift 🎁
It was absolutely amazing. Most moving performance I've heard in a long, long time.
Why do ppl feel the need to put others down to make a point … this is the state of the world today … Joni is one of a kind she’s an icon …
I’m a tough old guy. I’ve been in street fights and I’ve wrestled wild dogs. And I’ll tell you something. Joni Mitchell’s voice is so exquisite that it makes me cry.
wait i really want to hear about you wrestling wild dogs tho
I'd read the book that starts with this line
I believe you! 😆
Sounds like andropause
I've wrestled evil clowns standing on one foot.😂
First heard this beautiful song when i was 17. I'm 71 now and it's still one of the most beautiful songs in the history of music. Love it, love you and thank you for performing in this year's grammys. You're still as lovely as ever. Thanks Joni ❤
Joni's Circle Game is a lot more poignant now than when we listened to it in the sixties, isn't it?
We are of the same generation; I too am 71. I wore out my Ladies of the Canyon LP, playing it so much. I realized that could happen because when I tried to play it on a friend's record player, it jumped and skipped all over. I'd worn the grooves down to almost nothing.
@@KJNAmelia Try finding an 8-track player.
@@DavidLS1 What was going to be my first car (a used Opel) had an 8-track player and I bought an Irish folk song tape for it. But then my dad made me return the car because it had a cracked windshield. That was the beginning and the end of my experience with an 8-track player.
Same as me 💙
This is the first song I remember hearing as a child. My mom and I sang it together in her car when it came out. I’m 57 now and my mom is gone. I’m right there with her whenever I hear it. Thank you
I lost my mom in Jan (2024). Today is Mothers Day. I am right there with you on your comment. I'm 55 years old
Me too
I Am 57 too...and lost my beautiful Mum 2 years ago next month.
I alwaYs thought lyrics where saying I never knew "love" rather than "life" at all.
All fits now...I knew love from the very beginning ❤ 🎉😊
You probably heard the Joan Collins version
Right there with you - lost my Mum 3 years ago only 61 and used to sing Joni with her growing up. Breaks my heart to listen to it but also brings her closer to me ❤
I want this played at my funeral as well. It reminds me of my best friend jaclyn that died. We will be reunited in heaven when i go.
That's beautiful ❤
I believe you will
Take Care ❤
64 years old. I don’t listen to those not prepared to listen. Love those who do. I agree with Joni implicitly. Love, love, love... Xxxxx
So many people hear the Judy Collins version of this song, and good as it may be, but the vocal tone of Joni's is sublime. Salute to an incredible talent, we owe it to our generations to come to keep her immortal in music.
Thanks Joni, it was great seeing you do this song on the Grammys tonight. You mean a lot to me... I'll always remember you ❤️🌹🙏
First verse on 'clouds' was just a warmup... things get deep in a hurry. "But now old friends are acting strange. They shake their heads, they say I've changed. Well something's lost but something's gained in living every day..." Imagine already being this wise in her early 20's when she wrote this masterpiece.
a shame that society is so primitive yet. Good things should be taught to humans the moment they are born.
Exactly. Well said
@@thelastrebelshow1627 Yes, I can how my comment could be confusing. I was referring to first verse = clouds, second verse = love, third verse = life.
i have always marveled at that
@@thelastrebelshow1627 Why take the reply so personally, try and look at the picture from; "Both Sides Now".
I remember the days of that song. How people dressed, the cool cars they drove. It was cool man. ❤️❤️❤️
Younger Joni singing this vs older Joni. The younger sang it optimistically, and this Joni sings from experience. Poignant melancholy. Sublime.
The most amazing performance tonight! A break out in tears …. wonderful memory…. Sadness and Joy….. and living every minute. Thank you for your Grace… and for gracing our lives ❤
She is still so special after all these years, and that song is a masterpiece.
The graviteasing monument of imagine word ... live love like life ... waters world warmth woman wine ... suckle rush sooth salve sit-u-sigh ... thankyou prince & JONI MITCHELL
Joni performing this song on tonight’s 2024 Grammys , so moving. The songs up for awards don’t hold a candle to this masterpiece. Hope the young songwriters took note
I love this song. It encapsulates everything that most of us feel, especially during these difficult and confusing times. The only thing I know about life is I don’t want to hurt others for any reason. I don’t want to add pain to someone’s life, especially since we never know what someone is really going through inside.
She was great on the Grammys tonight! ❤❤
Joni is one of the greatest singer/songwriters in musical history.
This song puts my mother rite beside me. She passed 25 yrs ago, way too young.
So glad you still think of her in such a special way!!
Joni, Listening to you last night brought tears to my eyes. I just turned 60 and I realized on a deeper level what makes a great song: its relatable message and changing understandings. I also came up with a great project for my Philosophy class for in Bolivia. Now they will know you. I love you. You are a national treasure.
Hear you from Australia .
Something's lost and something's gained in living every day.
Those words have sustained me through many painful times. Love you Joni 💖.
Joni, the singer, composer, the lyricist, the poet, the psychologist, the musician, the arranger, the producer, the painter, the artist .... The GREATEST of the greats bar none.
Und Gitarristen....eine mit Seele...
That's why Herbie Hancock won the Grammy in 2008 for his album: River: The Joni Letters. She defines the word "exquisite" in every sense. Thank you, Joni.
.. The Angel:)
Absolutely agree 🌟
The eternal earthmother.
The greatest song ever written. The only song that truly is a synonym to whatever it is we call life , from beginning to end...
Nice avatar Monika. I love Jeff Bucklys voice

Still here in 2024
I’ve looked at life from both sides now..
Beautiful voice with powerful words. I heard this song when I first came to America 57 years ago.. Still I relish at the age of 80..
Not one to cry over music, but this song is the exception. It's a timeless song that only continues to hit home harder and harder as we grow older.
I couldn't agree more. listening to this right now, in tears....
I am one of those instead who cry over music and over good things in general, so you can imagine my state right now as I write :)
If this brings you to tears, be sure to check out Joni’s performance with Belinda Carlisle to see it from the other end of her life. It takes it full circle.

The purest, truest part of the human soul is this song
I had never heard this song until tonight on the Grammys. It quickly brought me to tears, and I don’t know much about Joni Mitchell. What a musical genius.
Quickly find Blue, listen to the beauty over and over, then go right through he catalogue, favorite track of mine Cold Blue Steel live in London.Go!
Brought tears Joni for your 2024 Grammy
Me too😢
I cried the whole time she sang tonight..Magnificent.
Seeing the older celebs in tears , Beyoncé , Meryl Streep …. They were feeling it deeply
@@MMacAttackcalling Beyoncé an “older” celebrity is wild 😭
Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
Looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun
They rain and they snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's cloud's illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all
Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way that you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way
But now it's just another show
And you leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away
I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
It's love's illusions that I recall
I really don't know love
Really don't know love at all
Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say, "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way
Oh, but now old friends they're acting strange
And they shake their heads, they tell me that I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day
I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all
It's life's illusions that I recall
I really don't know life
I really don't know life at all
This song really takes me back, way back. Thanks for the lyrics.
thank you for the words
Tx for lyrics. Simply beautiful
Maravillosa traducción. Es tan perfecta esta poesía de vida. Ah!!!!!!!!!. Te amo Joni
The correct ending should be
I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's life's illusions i recall
I really don't know life at all
If you write a great song at 21 and still think you’ve written a great song at 77 then you know a great song when you hear it!
This is a great song!
@ReligionlessFAITH If you’re referring to the Heart song then I would agree it’s a good song with a good arrangement but is it a great song?
A great song (imo) will still sound great in a variety of styles!
@ReligionlessFAITH those Wilson sisters sure knew how to Rock!
@@charleBerglund Pareidolia, yes, I’ve looked at clouds that way. Thanks for teaching me a new word. Joni just sang Both Sides Now at Newport Folk Festival to a standing ovation, some with tears rolling down their cheek!
❤❤❤
@ReligionlessFAITH😊
I learned this song in third grade music class in 1968. Still as powerful as ever at last night's Grammys
One of THE greatest songs of the 20th century.
Wow! What an incredible story! Yes, none of us know life at all. Now that I am about to turn 65, I am seeing the other side now. When I saw my grandparents years ago when I first heard this song over 50 years ago, I saw only one side of life but now that I am older, I see and know both sides and realize I really don’t know life at all. I just want to learn more and maybe we’ll all see what this life is about fully when we move on to the next life…Thank you Joni for a remarkable stories life you’ve lived and shared with us. You are truly an amazing woman and artist. Congratulations on a life well lived so gracefully. Thank you.
Well said. I just turned 60 and more than ever, I realize that life is a cycle. My "turn" would come as did those who came before me.
Decades later and it still makes me cry
If I had to choose one song to listen to for the rest of my life. It would be this one. This song inspired me to try writing my own poems. So grateful to you Joni. You have given us a song we could grow old with
Thousands of comments. Thousands and thousands thumbs up, not one thumbs down. You're heaven sent Joni.
One of the best songs ever written ❤❤
This is one of the greatest, most soulful songs ever. Becomes ever more poignant w age. 🙏
Thank you for this - nostalgia brings it back to me - being 90 years old hasn't changed it...
Thank you Joni Mitchell for performing this tonight. I felt the words of wisdom so deeply now that I am older. I guess I heard this song from both sides of life now❤
I feel that too, thanks for expressing it !
There's a good reason why the artists of her era admired her so much.
She was very young when she wrote this beautiful work of art, she knew more about life at that age than most will ever figure out.
so many emotions and memories come flooding back hearing this song and seeing you on stage... thank you joni... love you
This is a Beautiful, Timeless, Universal song. ❤
This song is amazing, ageless, love it, exactly how I feel it's all a mystery now, I know less the older I get❤ love this joni
It is astonishing how she could see both the washing away of youthful folly and also capture the clarity and often regret of old age. A true sage through beautiful music. I have been married for decades and always this song speaks…
Yeah. But. You haven't met me yet. (Just saying). Lol.. lol.
I have cataracts 😅 .
Clouds.. and Floaters. Yeah.
I chase shit around all day.. 😢
Beautiful performance on the Grammys tonight! 🥰
So many people say life is meaningless, but there are clouds, rain, and gentle breezes that come off the gulf, and sometimes love finds you...
Just a voice, a guitar, and words. But have you ever been more fascinated and blown away?
Simplicity is absolute beauty. With this version, we can absolutely feel the sincerity, irony, poignancy and nature of what life is.
She still sounds amazing. Love this song forever. Joni you made me cry during the Grammys. Thank you❤.
I want this song to be played at my funeral.
I've looked at death from both sides now.
😧
me too 🙏
And my wedding
Me, too!
I'm a father with two grandchildren in my late 50s now and just took a quick nap and woke up suddenly humming the song in my head from my sleep then searched on TH-cam the only lines I recall about the song from when I was kid then Voila! Got it! Then looped the video while listening to it tearing up. "I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHY, AT ALL!" NO pun intended. I grew up loving heavy rock then eventually playing drums in a band but this song just popped out my mind just now from decades of not hearing this song. Never knew the title but perhaps my mom would have told me if she were alive.
Joni , your words and music and singing got me through some of the most meaningful times of my life , good and bad
Play this song on my funeral. So true to myself. Most beautiful song. ❤❤❤❤
Her music don't come from her brain, its come from her heart and soul. And she has a beautiful soul ❤.
Beautiful Beautiful Song ..... Thank You Joni
Beautiful words sung by a woman with the voice of an angel. Moved by a song written before I was born. The older I become, the less I am sure about the certainties that once anchored me, but this perfect song will always be there. My dear father passed away several weeks ago and I have listened to this song so many times since. Thank you so much Joni x
Joni, you have always been my #1 for decades! No one can touch you!
Amazing performance tonight at the Grammys. So moving. Had everyone in tears.
I found some old family photos and cried. This song made me feel better.
Great song from good times past and gone.....will never be another time. Like those days.....so fortunate have grow in up in a more innocent time as a kid when things were simple.
I used to read /sing her book (of the same name) to my now 28 yo daughter. That Grammy performance really took us both back. Still crying!
I was too "rock n roll" when this first came ....but now I really like it, its magical.
Master level songwriting and performance
Truly a beautiful song ❤
Beautiful performance on the Grammy tonight 👏🏾. Thanks Joni ❤️ 😊 🙏🏾
Our numbers are shrinking, Joni keep teaching the kids what our long journey has been about. Peace Love Gentleness
Joni Mitchell just kills me, Such beauty in every word, Every chord, Every story.
Joni, it was so wonderful to see & hear you sing Both Sides Now tonight at the Grammys. You made my night. ❤ Thank You & God Bless You Joni.
Hearing this for the first time today. Was recommended by a friend. Lovely song.
In her youth her voice was so beautiful and I will always love Joni ❤ I want to learn this song and play it on my guitar and pretend I’m Joni Mitchell for a few minutes.
This song is part of the sound track of my life. Living with my grandparents while my parents were in rehab. 1980 something singing this to my Grandmom. I have not heard this song in many years. I miss and love you grandma!
Stunning song. Joni is a true legend. One of the purist forces of singer songwriting in this last 6 decades. She was performing about the same year I was born in 1971. Her music reflects a much simpler time, where everything seemed possible. When I listen to it, I may as well be stepping into a time machine. Thanks for the time machine Joni.
this my favorite song in whole world
Rick Beato brought me here. He just uploaded his video about her an hour ago. I've been a long-time fan of Joni since my parents took me to see the original theatrical release of The Last Waltz documentary. I was 10-years old at the time.
What a piece of music every time I listen to this is awesome
I love the meaning of this song. Makes me cry. Great Grammy performance.
Love you Joni Mitchell, this song you sung at the Grammys tonight brought back memories of everything we all been thru
Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez had the most beautiful in-tuned voices ever, no matter how simple the harmony, they would turn all songs in a delight to the ears.
I'd add Karen Carpenter.
And they both could eat corn through a picket fence
You nailed it tonight, beautiful on the Grammys... you have made my 🌎 a better place with your magical ✨️ talent ✌️&❤
Well, something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day, 💕💔💖I do believe this is my most favorite song in the entire world
Thank you Joni. This song is much deeper than some people realize.
So deep💜

..something’s lost, and something’s gained, in living every day.. ❤️
To write something so insightful about life at such a young age is so very rare. Her poignant reflections of looking back and contrasting the same things in our lives from when we are young compared to when we are older is true lyrical genius.
And to see her perform it on the Grammys last night was a lesson in deeply felt lyrics and supremely gifted artistry. She HELD the audience spellbound. ❤
It brings back the years
She's a goddess. I've been a Joni fan my whole life.

Make sure to listen to her voice on the original!
Listening to Joni Mitchell perform this song at the Grammys last night was awesome! Couldnt have picked a more perfect song. Definitely brought back alot of memories.
Even after listening for decades, her songs are still fresh and vibrant and relevant. She's my musical touchstone that everything out there is compared against, and she always brings me an indescribable level of inner comfort and centeredness. I am so grateful to have had her as a musical presence through my teens to my senior years. How great is that.
