In response to the previous post about the eagle claw hook I also had two break on catfish one of the fish I was able to land it as I was removing the hook by hand no pliers about a quarter inch of the hook remained in the cat the second one I lost but upon reeling up to rebait I only had the shank up to as the hook curves know loner use them as I don't trust them.
Your channel got me into catfishing and I am more successful than I think I could ever be, I used to use eagle claw hooks but they would always bend super easily so I switched to gamagatsu and they work pretty well
I mostly use 5ott, 8ott, and 12 ott circle hooks for catfish. I also smash the barbs down just in case the fish swallow the hook. I would like to see a company make circle hooks barbless. I like the looks of the hooks you have there. Great video!
What do you mean? I'd guess 85% of the manufacturers that make circle hooks make barbless circle hooks from what I've seen throughout life. Hell even the Walmarts which are geographically located within heavily fished regions carry these hooks and even more so if that region has barbed hook restrictions on certain fish species.
I used to use all brands and have gotten to use only Gamakatsu hooks now. I haven't lost a catfish in over ten years using that brand.. They were using circle hooks on saltwater longlines for years before you heard about them being used for freshwater. I only use circle hooks because everything except bullhead gets hooked in the corner of the mouth for me.
I got 2 pack of those the 7/0 best hooks by far I have used wide gap great eye for snelling and great for live bait I switched from team catfish diaachi hooks
I like the Boga grip for easier One hand operation and built in scale but I don't like using them on very big fish as the gripping surface area is so small. On the other hand the clamp type grips can be difficult for my arthritic hands sometimes, so I generally just retrieve, weigh and release in the net if they are very big. However with an Artificial knee, hip, both shoulders and disc in my back I have found that a younger fishing partner works great and Guides are the best as they usually even bait the hook. 😅
Yes, I am looking for a better fish grip, one that works with a scale. Many grips on the market works like vice grips and clamps the fish too tight, not what I am looking for fish I release.
I just weigh the fish in a net and subtract the weight of the net if I catch a big catfish. That way I don't damage the fishes mouth with a grip. I've done that and ended up keeping the fish
My buddy caught two 3 lb channels at a pond on the Catfish Pro shad cubes, so it catches fish. Best circle hooks are Gamakatsu and Owner. Best affordable hooks are Eagle Claw circle sea hooks. I had one of these break on a big fish recently so I'm back to Gamma's. And you said you caught a 71 lber on a 5/0 hook, people think you need a big hook to catch big fish which isn't true. You just need a strong, sharp hook and match hook size to bait size
Thanks for all your great videos. I'm fairly new to cat-fishing and recently saw some odd information. It said that circle hooks will ONLY work when fishing with fresh cut-bait. It seemed to suggest that some of the more popular baits: flavored chicken, hot dogs , cheese balls, etc, do not work with circle hooks. It said catfish will only briefly nibble or 'mouth' these and immediately refuse them and spit them out. A circle hook requires the hook to be deeper in the mouth for a longer time. The conclusion was that if you want to use chicken or hot dogs, you MUST use treble hooks or you'll NEVER catch a catfish. What do you think?
@@haroldsfishingadventures754 oh, I use inline circle hooks on everything, even bream (bluegill). It’s the offset circle hooks I’m not sure about. I’m open to advice and opinions on that though.

@@jaymize5672 You get a "trigger action" when you snell a straight eyed hook. You can also use a Palomar knot which will give the same action as a snelled bent eyed hook. If you use a Palomar knot on a bent eye hook then you get an "unhooking action". I've used both and caught fish with both. The bent eye hooks seem to catch fewer fish and more of the fish are skin hooked at the corner of the mouth than fully hooked.

Better the hook than your knot, at least it wasn't your fault

Great information thank you I need to try out some of their hooks
Great advice as usual thank you
Good information, Hadn't thought about the bait issue. Thanks
My brother bought me some last week haven’t tried them yet. I like the Charlie Brown hooks see how these do.

Inlines are required for some species

Right ! Big Hook Big Bait
Great advice as usual…. 10/0 is a bloody big hook…can’t wait to see the fish you get on one
I’m going for some big flathead summer / early fall and plan to test them out.
I use catfish pro hooks. They are good hooks. 10/0 baby

Depends on the species bro, I had a 3 lb flathead absolutely gut a 6/0 hook over the weekend.

A huge channel requires only a 3 to 4 aught hook.
