Something I notice a lot of people miss is that in the beginning, the master says that Leroy has to confront fear, vengeance, and love before he can achieve the status of "Master". Throughout the film he achieves this with his interactions with Eddie Arkadian, Sho Nuff and Laura Charles.
This is literally my favorite movie ever. I’ve had it in vHS, DVD, and now Blu-Ray. I’ve probably watched it over 1000 times. This has got to be one of the all time great black movies ever.
41:45 Bruce Leroy gave Sho Nuff some game in the theatre: “The secret awaits eyes unclouded by ambition… Those who are bound by desire see only that which can be held in their hands” Only for Sho Nuff to reject and mock what Leroy was trying to tell him while simultaneously proving his point. Although Sho Nuff had the skills, his arrogance and clouded ambition hindered him from reaching his full potential...Spot on Big Court.
Hot take on MVP: Ritchie is the MVP. He was more integral to Bruce Leroy's growth than the antagonist or the love interest. Ritchie was like NinjaNinja in Afro Samurai.
Ernie Reyes Jr. was trained by his father Ernie Reyes Sr. who was a martial artist and fight choreographer. They were both in Surf Ninjas. Jr had his own tv show as a kid with Gil Gerard(Buck Rogers)
Eddie Arcadian was like Ulysses Klaue in Black Panther: a villain but not the main villain. ShoNuff was like Killmonger and his confrontation with Bruce Leroy was inevitable
Leroy’s master explains why he sent him searching for the master of Sum Dum Goy. Leroy kept looking for external validation of being a master. He wanted him to realize he had to look within.
Also in my head cannon sho-nuff gained his skill and his glow from another master kung-fu/karate master like Leroy. But Leroy master was noble and made his student figure it out, but Sho-nuff master told him the secret out right. You have to have skill and the confidence that the glow is yours and you're the master. So Sho-Nuff had the glow because it's fun his ego. That's why he needed a crew to tell him how great he was, and why he needed to fight and beat Leroy because that boost beating the next great dragon would give him his full glow but not a Nobel glow. A glow of ego and hatred. Basically the light side and Dark side of the force star wars
The Last Dragon is the "level"..not the person. The whole movie is about not looking outside yourself. As nice as Leroy was, he thought his gift was based on outside things. Shonuff didn't. That's why he had glow first.
Sho Nuff could only make his hands glow. Leroy said to Laura that a great Warrior could make his hands glow. But only a master could make their entire body glow
Y’all hit everything in this episode!!! This my fav one after The Wood episode. Pause. “Catches bullets with his teeth? NIGGAH PLEEEEEEEASSSEE!!!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sho'Nuff was the Shogun of Harlem. Was there a Shogun of The Bronx? A Shogun of Manhattan? A Shogun of Brooklyn? A Shogun of Queens? A Shogun of Staten Island? The Last Dragon II: Attack of the Five Shoguns.
This is one of my favorite movies & it’s a cult classic. I would love to see a backstory on Shonuff. Michael Schultz directed this film. He also directed Which Way Is Up & Krush Groove. Fun Facts: Michael Schulz’ son is the kid who told Shonuff that Bruce Leroy is better than him. Michael Schultz said that the movie scene was inspired by when he went to see Enter The Dragon in theaters with all of the nationalities & the glow scene was inspired by Star Wars. The little brother Richie played by the late Leo O’Brien is the brother of Master Gee from The Sugarhill Story. Get we can please get stories on the following 80s movies: Purple Rain A Soldier’s Story The Color Purple She’s Gotta Have It Hollywood Shuffle Coming To America I’m Gonna Git You Sucka School Daze Do The Right Thing Harlem Nights Lean On Me Go Tell It On The Mountain Hard Lessons The Mighty Quinn Glory Krush Groove Rapping Action Jackson
Based upon what you guys are saying about the relevancy of martial arts nowadays, if they were to do a reboot, Leroy's moniker could used mockingly, since his martial arts style is more traditional, and Sho'Nuff's school would be more modern (MMA), and he would challenge Leroy in the same way MMA practitioners like to challenge other traditional martial artists to show whose style is more superior.
One thing about The Last Dragon that nobody ever talks about is how Bruce Leroy represents the Chinese style of Martial Arts and Shonuff represents the Japanese style, hence the title “Shogun!” I also realized how some of the old Kung Fu Films focused heavily on how the invading Japanese kill and try to take over the Chinese. Chinese Super Ninjas comes to mind on this subject.
Maaan y’all just don’t know how many younger black folks love this movie just as much as y’all. Ima mid 90s baby so I was just born when Jah was still pop lock-in out of rope 😂. But my pops ( a 70s baby) and my grandma put me on a lot of old movies. I knew about Star Wars before the newer ones came out and everything. But this was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I loved martial arts too and I was in the class too until my people took me out. But me and my best friend quote this movie word for word anytime we talk about it. And big court a hater for callin Beast a flunky 😂😂😂😂we always say “ I got em show! I got em!” And “BOW! Or ima SNAP this clown in twooo!”. And the “get up Lerooy, I got somethin real for yo ass in these hands “ lmfao. This and tales from the hood are easily in my top 5 favorite black busters. And brotha Tone definitely needs to get into writing films. That idea with Johnny being a villain could actually work. I’d tweak it a lil bit since y’all said it wouldn’t work because Sho couldn’t beat Leroy. The fact that Johnny trained under Leroy and then Sho would /should make him an actual threat to Leroy. He could have the full red glow that Sho couldn’t get to. And court was right about that. Because the master did say in the beginning that Leroy would have a sublime glow all over when he reached the final level. Sho did only have it in his hands, BUT he could’ve just been holding back thinkin he could beat Leroy without the full on glow.
I had to stop at the 46 minute mark to write this comment out. I'm 33 and really young, my uncle showed me this movie when u was roughly 12 or 13. I loved this movie and also had this crazy idea for a sequel to the movie. Bruce Leroy has become this myth in Harlem (if he was still a live today) his lil brother became a famous DJ in NY (like a Kid Capri) and he would always tell this story about how great his brother was but it's been so long no one remembers or belive him anymore. Bruce Leroy gave up fighting and teaching because he became too cocky while defending the neighborhood from the up take of gangs in Harlem and he allowed someone to get killed. Sho-Nuff actually went crazy from losing his fight with Leroy and lives on the streets always screaming he's the real master. Sho-Nuff still had his skill and his red glow but his mental state keeps him from being what he used to be. Leroy is in self exile and even watches over sho-nuff by giving him food and even still spars with him sometimes.
Funny I was just thinking if they'll do this classic. This HOF material here! My 2 yr old daughter loves Sho-Nuff. Let's get it!!! Just directa your feetza to daddy green's pizza!
+ I think Sho was the master for the longest but started hearing stories about this "Bruce Leroy" but never found him. Maybe they were from different boroughs. When the movie picks up you see Leroy looking for self discovery and he runs into Sho Nuff.
I been waiting on this review. 👌🏾 Magnificent, Classic and Hilarious review. Keep em coming. Another suggestion for a Black Buster is "Uninvited Guest" with Mekhi Phifer. Its not a classic movie but it would hilarious to hear ya'll critic the movie.
Broskis, I applaud you for speaking on this classic. I know I asked you to review a few movies but I don't remember whether I added this one. Great choice though.
This was good 👍🏾 Brought back memories of me watching this when I was younger with my aunt (who's not not that much older than me) . I think she had a thing for Bruce Leroy 🤣 back then
Dawg Team, I know this post old but I just watched Last Dragon again ... how did Shonuff hear about him catching bullets with his teeth . When did somebody shoot at Leroy?
Speaking of mystique, I actually met Vanity in 89 and saw Taimak taking out his trash on my way to work the same summer. Both were very cool. Yes, she's that fine in person
Shout out to the dude with the blue shirt he said something I never thought about even after years of watching that movie Sho’Nuff only got the glow in his hands. He didn’t get it all over his body.
Hey yall if they did a remake who would yall cast as who???? Michael Jai White as Sho'Nuff Halle Bailey or Zoë Kravitz as Laura Charles Andy Serkis as Eddie Arcadian
Also I think the thing holding Sho nuff back was he needed outside respect he trained enough to get the glow but he didn’t believe in himself. He knew he was bad but he needed & craved validation till it held him back.
Great Film, absolutely love this one. Tessa Thompson delivers the “Tits” speech in another Black led and directed movie, Sorry To Bother You (2018). Great film about code switching and capitalism.
Something I notice a lot of people miss is that in the beginning, the master says that Leroy has to confront fear, vengeance, and love before he can achieve the status of "Master". Throughout the film he achieves this with his interactions with Eddie Arkadian, Sho Nuff and Laura Charles.
I didn’t miss it. Watched this movie too many times for that lol.

Facts! That is very true! Even in real life.... that's real!
All facets must be embraced
I definitely missed it. Thank you.
Funniest part is when Bruce Leroy gets the glow finally, squeezes Shonuff’s hand and you hear Shonuff say “Lemme go nigga lemme goooo!” 😂
I always thought he said "Lemme go Muthafugga Lemme go!"
This is literally my favorite movie ever. I’ve had it in vHS, DVD, and now Blu-Ray. I’ve probably watched it over 1000 times. This has got to be one of the all time great black movies ever.
Sho Nuff was the Detroit Pistons to Bruce Leroy's Michael Jordan
We did have Jim Kelly and Ron Van Clief (who is Taimak's sensei) in the 70s, so they kinda laid the groundwork for Bruce Leroy to take off.
Don’t forget Dolemite😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
41:45 Bruce Leroy gave Sho Nuff some game in the theatre:
“The secret awaits eyes unclouded by ambition… Those who are bound by desire see only that which can be held in their hands”
Only for Sho Nuff to reject and mock what Leroy was trying to tell him while simultaneously proving his point. Although Sho Nuff had the skills, his arrogance and clouded ambition hindered him from reaching his full potential...Spot on Big Court.
This was such a dope conversation. Felt like I was in it with my guys. A brilliant idea for a series. Keep it up gents!
I've literally had a smile on my face this ENTIRE episode; love all the content... looking forward to the first big screen production.
Hot take on MVP: Ritchie is the MVP. He was more integral to Bruce Leroy's growth than the antagonist or the love interest. Ritchie was like NinjaNinja in Afro Samurai.
Fun Fact: He was the brother of Master Gee from The Sugarhill Gang
Richie pop locking out of the ropes… gave me such hope for the world….😅
@@ohin27 on the real! That was one of my favor scenes besides him telling Eddie to let go of his woman🤣
I was a teenager when this movie came out, and me and my friends saw it at the theater 3 times! We loved it.
I think Show-Nuf is the MVP because anyone who sees this movie will walk around afterwards saying…”who am I ?…Show-Nuf! “
Ernie Reyes Jr. was trained by his father Ernie Reyes Sr. who was a martial artist and fight choreographer. They were both in Surf Ninjas. Jr had his own tv show as a kid with Gil Gerard(Buck Rogers)

Datz a dope comparison rt
Very true!!!
Leroy’s master explains why he sent him searching for the master of Sum Dum Goy. Leroy kept looking for external validation of being a master. He wanted him to realize he had to look within.
Also.. he wanted Leroy to experience life.. The things he couldn't learn in a dojo. Like love and vengeance.
This a certified classic man.Podcast is so DOPE. Yall gotta do He got game too!
I grew up on this movie.. bought 3 times on DVD.. a great movie till this day
I'm super ready for this one!!!! Me and my brothers fought over VANITY!!! So many quotables!!!!
Or should I say " Laura Charles!"

If only he listened to Willie Hutch.

Boom! That’s one of my childhood favorites done. Now we just gotta get that “Meteor Man” in and my heart will be content.
I was definitely thinking the Last Dragon should get a Cobra Kai type series. We need more orgin story from Leroy and Sho-nuff.
“Laura Charles…I would like to see her” WHO WOULDNT FOOL! 😂
This is what I’m talking about!! Black classic!! Can’t wait.
One of my favorite breakdowns from yall 🔥
Fun fact : one of Shonuff girls was the MJs girl from Thriller

Ernie Reyes Jr's dad was the stunt coordinator for the movie.

This is one the best movies about growing and confidence and how hard it'll be to realize your own potential
A prequel to The Last Dragon called the Shogun of Harlem would be dope......showing how Shonuff became who he was

As a recast for Taimak. Dude from How I got away with Murder. Rome Flynn.

This was a great movie review. One of the great classics, appreciate the luv. Keep these coming.
Can we get Krush Groove or Beat Street next
Yes
That was the movie theater vibe in Times Square at the time
Shogun was THE FINAL LEVEL. My favorite movie of all time. I've seen it at least 10,000 times. Leroy mission was to find the master [Sho]
This was my childhood still my favorite movie ever
I’ve been WAITING for this one. My all time favorite movie.

Brought back memories of me watching this when I was younger with my aunt (who's not not that much older than me) . I think she had a thing for Bruce Leroy 🤣 back then
Shit, I figured that Shonuff took his look from the wrestling tag team The Road Warriors 😂 47:58

So we ain't gone talk about how Sho Nuff whooped everybody that ran up on that stage in the movie theater?
Remember when cats use to rock the karate suits and shoes in the hood 😂
Great episode! Love this movie and discussion.
Growing up I always thought if they remade the movie busta rhymes should play sho nuff.
Naw it should be Nick Cannon as Sho Nuff and Chris Brown as Bruce Leroy cause they both real martial artists
Y’all should do step-by-step breakdown no skipping to the end or the middle
Someone should make a prequel showing the origin of Shownuff
Shout out to the dude with the blue shirt he said something I never thought about even after years of watching that movie Sho’Nuff only got the glow in his hands. He didn’t get it all over his body.
Who would you rather sign a recording contract with: Eddie Arkadian or Big Red from The Five Heartbeats?
Eddie Arkadian. Big Red will hang you out of the window & kill you.
Yall need do a review of Action Jackson
i hope a Last Dragon renaissance is comin!
The last great Ninja Movie was Ninja Assassin 2009. Hands down. FACTS!
Willie Hutch had some slaps on the Last Dragon soundtrack also
Hey yall if they did a remake who would yall cast as who????
Michael Jai White as Sho'Nuff
Halle Bailey or Zoë Kravitz as Laura Charles
Andy Serkis as Eddie Arcadian
Shonuff caught a simple assault/pcp possession charge the summer before.
🤣🤣 U tore up for that one ... But it's sooo believable !! Sho had too do a time but now he's back in Harlem wrecking havoc!!!!
Had me cracking up through the whole thing. The Last Dragon was the final rank in his training
Who do I have to contact to audition to be Sho in his origin story...ima 2nd degree black belt in karate, I'm 6'3 and I got the hair
This fucking movie molded me as a child bruh
Literally my favorite movie as a young girl I came home and watched it every day for years 😂
Also I think the thing holding Sho nuff back was he needed outside respect he trained enough to get the glow but he didn’t believe in himself. He knew he was bad but he needed & craved validation till it held him back.
I just watched that like a month ago one of the favorites of all time you got that glow was the cut
Great Film, absolutely love this one. Tessa Thompson delivers the “Tits” speech in another Black led and directed movie, Sorry To Bother You (2018). Great film about code switching and capitalism.
Favorite movie as a kid krush groove next
A animated series would work as some actors are dead. I would have the children of Leroy and shogun being trained by Leroy
5✊🏾 EASY! Still can watch it today and enjoy the movie! It’s one of those movies that I’m hype to show my son one day!
ShoNuff had the self confidence and bravado. He was the Shogun of Harlem. The Shogun was only second to the Emperor in Japan.
My Sensai in Dallas (Oak Cliff) Lee Kung Fu was the same way with the gi you had to earn it and stick with it
My favorite childhood movie walking out th theater trying to get the glow
I lost it and felt the fear for Leroy when Sho Nuff unveiled his red aura! 😮
Leroy was looking like where’s mine at!!!!
great break down
Would like to see a review of Queen and Slim
