It's bad script writing.
I would say they're HEAT-FS rounds. The principle is the same enough, just that it has a molten jet penetrator.
Probably used the m908 obstacle reduction round, it's basically fin stabilized HE and it's what I would use on a group of foot mobiles
While the writers probably wanted Beeg Boom, the round they would likely use is essentially a giant shotgun round.
