    Nice review video as always! If I could express a wish, I know how hard and tricky it is to get the privilege of watching a "behind the scene / making of" of your pro gigs. but man-oh-man, these videos that show how things are done, and how the creative process works from a real set are soooo precious. I keep crossing my fingers we'd see more of those. thanks!! :)

    "I think that's syphilis under a microscope."
    Seems about right!
    All jokes aside, really quite impressed with these units for the money - particularly the projection unit which is frankly incredible for the price. Came here entirely sceptical that these would be any good as they're so cheap, but you're right on the money regarding kit prejudice.

    I bought one of these Godox projection lens for use on my classic dedo 150w... there are a few issues; the flange on the projection barrel that rest into the barn door holders of the light is not milled to very tight specs, mine has varying thickness which means it only goes onto the light when in a specific orientation... and this extra thickness prevents the projection barrel from being rotated... i think the fix is for me to carefully file down the flange. There is also a thin rubber piece that sits in the grove of this flange which i think is not necessary on the Dedo and I removed it (perhaps it for use on Godox own s30). The other issue is the 4 shutter blades are not so cleanly perfect so that you see some unevenness because its not a perfect straight edge... this goes away once de-focused. May try to run some 1000 grit sand paper along the edge. Given the price these are not deal breakers, i ordered a 2nd one.

    • @NYCgaffer
      @NYCgaffer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @John Roche I did end up grinding down the flanges on the 2 godox projection lens i bought. they now work perfectly on the classic dedo 150 as well as on my S30's. Neither would really fit the 150 straight out of the box.

    I did not realize they basically make Graduated ND filters for lights, or the thirds scrim. I can think a lot of uses for this but like you said evening out light intensity of say a wall back light going up or down a wall could be really nice instead of getting a hot spot near the source. Really interesting to note.

A lot of work I do (if we are not competing with any daylight, so say night scenes) tends to be at around 800 to 2000 ISO. But this is mostly due to budget situations in Australia. Often my dedo lights are running at sub 10%.

    Hello Andrew! Great and helpful review as always. I'm currently contemplating between getting a couple of these and maybe a projection attachment in the future OR a set of Aputure LS Mini 20s, which are quite similar but have number of differences (7500k vs 5600k, 20 to 80 vs 6 to 55 degree beam angle, full power vs 1/3 power when battery powered). Unfortunately, due to differences in bundle ingeridents, Godox set of 3 lights is 300$ pricier than the set of Aputure ones.
    What would you recommend among the two as an addition to an all-arounder set of lights?

    • @gaffergear

  • @noahyv
    @noahyv 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you mount the projection mount, do these lights have to be in spot or flood? Does changing the spot/flood focus of the s30/dedo affect the projection optics and overall photometrics? Seems like the projection mount may be designed to take a collimated light beam?

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't used them in a long time so I'm going by memory, but I think the dedo needs to be spotted up about 1/3 to get best light levels and even beam.
      You can go to a tighter beam and create a hot spot that can be used for effect with some gobos.

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      These are vastly superior optics. Especially if your subject moves forward or backwards of the focal point with a beam edge or cut on them. Almost no colour fraying at all, you have to be looking for it and it's less than a mm wide.

    If this light is dimmable, is there any need for scrims?

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question!
      Yes, if I get a DP that wants to shoot at f1.4 then I'm stuck at the bottom of the dimmer (5% to 10%) with no room to trim.
      Scrims enable me to get some range back into the dimmers.

      @@tonelessbod can't remember the numbers, but the Aputure 300D and spotlight is about 6 or 7 times brighter by memory. The Dedo DLED 7 is a disappointment for light level, especially for the cost, and the S-30 is only 30 watt.
