June 17, 1997 - Quite possibly Nintendo's most secretive game, Banjo-Kazooie has been shrouded in mystery ever since rumors surfaced of its existence as "project: Dream" sometime ago. Until now, all that was known about Rare's title was its new name, Banjo-Kazooie, and that it would rival Super Mario 64 in more ways than one.
Sources close to Nintendo have finally leaked a bit of information about the two main characters and the gameplay, itself. Banjo-Kazooie stands for Banjo and Kazooie, two different characters who play as a team. Banjo is a bear and Kazooie is a small bird that rides in Banjo's back-pack. Strange? You bet. But with multiple abilities per character -- like swimming, flying and what have you, nobody's complaining.
The game takes place in a 3D world very similar to Super Mario 64. Where the game differs from the fat Italian plumber's, however, is in its enhanced gameplay and country western setting. Banjo and Kazooie travel through the game collecting musical notes and golden puzzle pieces. The 3D worlds are much bigger than that of Super Mario 64, all but begging players to explore, explore, and explore some more.
With beautiful, rich textures that eclipse Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie could be the game that finally does away with the "Nintendo 64" look. Rare has been working hard on this title and Nintendo is backing it with all of its power.

It's kinda funny how much charm the old quality gives to a lot of this beta footage. It makes it look more magical I guess? It applies to a lot of games.
thanks goodness they changed the sfx for collecting the eggs. very annoying

lol it's the same as in the finished version, just a different instrument. the kazoo makes more sense actually. also, the final sound is annoying, too.
That sound when picking up eggs, good thing they did change it :p
Creeps me out seeing the game like this.. ha
I would kill to play this rom. God I hope they release these old early builds someday. I would kill to play them.
It actually is! It was from Fungus Forest. You Know, the one you can change to Day and Night? Anyway, Banjo Kazooie was going to have Fungus Forest, but was scrapped, and put into Donkey Kong 64 instead. I saw a theory that this scene was Fungus Forest. See how it is green and the water is not murky? And look at that shark. It kind of looks like a non-metal version of Clanker. Could Clanker have played a roll in Fungus Forest? You decide!
RFunk195 Actually part of Fungus Forest was made into Clankers cavern but it was heavily changed to make it unique in comparison to the other levels.
It's Fungi Forest
But it was going to be called fungus forest in Banjo-Kazooie @@P0chuL1ver
i would LOVE to see this version of Clanker's Cavern!
Time's like this makes me wish that Fungus Forest and the other levels were in the final product, and personally, I'd prefer listen to some of the beta themes instead of the final.
gameguy 64 These levels did make it into the final game they were just severely changed since this was an early version of the game. That first level, hammerhead beach, became treasure trove cove. That other level, Fungus Forest, became clankers cavern. Well part of it. The other part became Fungi Forest in DK64. And the levels that didn't make the cut for BK were reused in Banjo-Tooie and Donkey Kong 64. That's where a lot of unused assets went.
Yeah, originally they had planned a level for Banjo-Kazooie called "Fungus Forest" wich many believe featured the beta version of "Clanker the Whale" and was originally intended to be somewhere around the Click Clock Woods Jigsaw, since the actual Click Clock Woods are so far away from its Jigsaw and the Trees in the area are covered with moos and fungus. But the level was later removed and according to the rumor, it's first part was used for Clankers Cavern while its music went into DK64 ^^
LOL that egg sound though!! xD
Sebazztion1994 Yeah obvious why they changed it. Lol

Wow, I think the music was better in the beta. I also think my heart skipped a beat when they flew without any pad.
That would've actually been a great feature to have.
The little tune that plays (silently) when Banjo goes into Mumbo's hut sounds suspiciously like Tiny Kong's tune when you switch to playing as her in the tag barrel in DK64.
It was the Beta theme for mumbo mountain
GRANT FOUND THE BETA MUSIC FILE FOR MUMBOS MOUNTAIN.
1:09 Donkey Kong 64 music
penssmell997 throughout the whole video, I was reminded of DK64 because of the music.
Fungi forest theme
also 0:48 is a variation of Tiny Kong's character select theme
Well he is Rare's
Originally it was for ''clanker's river''
Interesting that none of the music, the three tracks played here, in this video made it in the final game. Also, I'm wondering why Grant Kirkhope has not released the music that played in the Clanker's Cavern clip.
Oh no...that egg pick-up theme certainly is not ANNOYING. XD
The only beta songs were missing that we know of are from the temple level in the Spanish video, and the the song that plays at the end of this video as they swim by clanker. The Fungi forest Beta music grant posted doesn't have that middle section that the DK64 version that that plays at the end of this video... Meaning that there was another song out there at one point!
I think the underwater level in the beta version was used for Fungi Forest later in Donkey Kong 64.
I got this tape
The last part wasn't Atlantis or Clanker's Cavern. It was Fungus Forest. One of the beta levels in Banjo-Kazooie.
Sweet, the old Treasure Trove Cove music sounds like a Beanland composition.
And thank god they changed the egg sound effect.
They just could used a debug feature and it was never planed to be in the game. But you're right, it would save alot of time.
i remember when i got this game on its launch day...got the game, n64 t-shirt, and the game soundtrack...good memories from a super cool game
1:09-1:17 sounds like the theme for DK64's Fungi Forest in the daytme.
I like the beta music and the finished game music.
Cool! Someone else noticed it too! It makes sense seeing as Fungi Forest was meant to be in BK but they already had like... 9? So, they put in DK64 instead!
thank god they toned down the "egg chime" thingy
My god that egg pickup sound would have been annoying.
@kaesefilm Clankers Cavern was supposed to be a level in BK, but it was scrapped and clankers cavern is whats left. They eventually completely re-made it in DK64.
Well he'll be in smash bros ultimate
Hard to believe N64 magazine (more recently called Nintendo Gamer) is out of print, especially seeing videos like these pop up on youtube.
AWWWWW that egg pickup sound is ANNOYING!!!! LOL!!!
very interesting, I like the music for Treasure Trove Cove in the beta version. To tell you the truth, I am almost tempted that I like it better than the one in the final version. But I only heard part of it, so I don't know if it's actually better. The one in the final version is great.
It sounds like it's part of the jungle level from DK64. It's not but it uses the same instruments.
Probably why it went on to be used for Jungle Japes in DK64 (you can hear the similarity).
The Treasure Trove Cove Beta music sounds MUCH better than the released version.
Hey! The last song is from DK64! 😮
That real shark clanker always make me feel waos
Actually that's not Fungus Forest Music. This was actually a tune called "Advent" that was going to be used in a map screen. But it never got used.
At the end was Fungi Forest music at nighttime! from donkey kong 64
i probably would have taken the game and thrown it out the window due to listening to the egg pick-up sounds *DUDANANAY!*
WTF...fungus forest at the end? EPIC
@kaesefilm yes it is very rumored to almost/might/is confirmed to be fungi forest. but was scrapped from banjo kazooie and i guess the elements were put in donkey kong 64 (and people say clankers cavern is what replaced fungi forest hens that shark and overall familiar layout we see there)
0:28 Not needing Flight Pads to fly = best thing ever.
DAMMIT WHY DIDN'T THEY LEAVE THAT IN D:
I actually prefer this model of Mumbo to the final one. But in general I always felt they couldn't quite nail his 3D look on N64, of all the characters he looked the least like his official artwork and CG renders.
No, Advent was not the Fungi Forest song. It was the theme for the map/hub.
this is the first game ive owned and my favorite game ive owned.
wow, the beta made Clanker look like a normal non-mechanical shark.
Looks like Clanker used to be a real, flesh and blood shark. Wonder why they changed him to be so much more terrifying.
Isn't the music they used in the beta Clanker's Cavern level from Fungi Forest in DK64?
Anyway, awesome look at the beta version of Banjo.
The music in clankers cavern was fungi forest from dk64 fungi forest was actually supposed to be in banjo kazooie
The final seconds of the video: I believe that may be a beta version of Clanker's Cavern! So he used to be gray?
I think that end piece was something they reused in Donkey Kong 64, it sounds like Fungi Forest.
Wow, very cool video though.
That music sounds much nicer than the final version. And I liked the music in the final version.
Thing is, Grant Kirkhope composed all of these for one game and the tracks were split between them, some not getting used at all.
0:57 it's me or 😞mumbo make the aku aku sound effect
@MarioKoopa6490 It is an amazing thing called "swimming". It is in the finished game too. :P
Clanker, you can compare it and see it's the same, minus a live shark... and textures... and the giant boulder in the passgeway...
Some people believe that Clanker's Cavern may have actually originally been Fungus Forest.
He finally got it back.
Sounds like the music from Clanker's Cavern would later become the music for Fungi Forest in Donkey Kong 64.
yes it's the music of Fungi Forest
The Clankers cavern music reminds me of Atlanta in Banjo Tooie.
1:10 clanker...
Makes sense - I just wonder what possessed them to make his insides both robotic -and- fleshy. At least it's less creepy that you knock his teeth in to get into his mouth with him being a robot.
OMFGGGGG I REMEBER THIS
i used to love this game
the last song that was played in that beta that song would be put in donkey kong 64 and the song from treasure trove cove that song got discarded and the egg sound got descarded as well when they were cleaning up the beta even mumbos original house
wow i had this video tape, cause i'm german. and i remember me watching this banjo part over and over again.
1:05 is the best part
Notice the Music at the end is exactly the same as parts of the Music in DK64's Fungi Forest. I guess they probably changed Clanker from a real Shark (even thou he has a blow hole lol) to a robot because some people would instantly shout "ANIMAL CRUELTY!!!"
Just noticed, at 00:49 the world music starts to fade out, and it kinda sounds like a sped-up and higher keyed Hailfire Peaks... Mt. Fire Eyes?!?
yes it's Fungi Forest music in the daytime.
He just gave an update on that; and he found the full song! It will be up soon.
he actually did get that track back and a couple of others
Whoa they started flying without a flying pad
i have this game on my console n64, clanker's cavern music is like DK64 fungi forest music. it's a rare game, i'll never sell to anyone.
The old TTC theme sounds part of Jungle Japes in DK64.
That music at 1:10 was used in Donkey Kong 64.
@NitronicTM that's because it WAS Fungi Forest.
That egg pickup sound....good god that was terrible.
fungi forest music... this beta is better than the final version
The music in the first level somehow reminds me of Conker so much...
Treasure Trove Cove's music sounds nice in the beta. Does anybody knows if it's still in the game?
Maybe using a gameshark to get it?
I would like to hear the entire music.
Kazooie can fly without flight pads! The honeycombs are 8 feet high! The notes are absolutely still! There are no snapping chests! Mumbo Jumbo dosen't talk! WHAT'S GOING ON HERE??!!
I prefer Kazooie's beta wings.
Look closely at them while Banjo is flying.
the music in clankers cavern.. did they use it on donkey kong 64? reminds me of it.
Fungi Forest music in Clanker's Cavern! lol
Mumbo eyes were scary back then!
Whoa...major difference in the SFX and music.
you can find beta mumbos mountain music in the ant fortress thing
@kaesefilm I'm halfway sure the music in Clanker's Cavern is the same tune in Cranky Kong's Lab.
Wow Clankers a real shark! :D
What do you mean terrible? At the time, there weren't many games around that could match Banjo as far as graphics went. The N64 was a powerful little console in its day.
Was the last bit (With the Fungi Forest music from DK64) supposed to be Fungus Forest? That music definitely did not fit Clanker's Cavern, and yes, Clanker was originally supposed to be a true shark.
@AbbyMireene No it was used for Fungi Forest
You mean daytime, and yeah, that sounds alot like the song.
Bro this was really made 2 years before banjo kazooie nab
There's a bunch of fan forums/website/videos that were made way before NAB as well
clanker looks more scary as an real whale
That music is from Donkey Kong 64. They must have scrapped it for BK and used it in DK years later.
The beta one looks much better than the final version...
@xThExJacKx Ya I know clanker's cavern is still a world, I've made a typo. I meant that Fungus Forest was going to be a level in BK.
Yeah, and it was underwater. What do you think it could have sounded like above water?
To shadow77890:
I want a shirt, but I was just a small child, so I didn't really check out anything...
