For context: This video was posted before the whole Season 15 episode length debacle, back when the only 40 minute episodes were shot with that length in mind (seasons 1-9) rather than it suddenly being tacked on later (season 15).
Yes, I think season 15 has been ruined by the episode length and because the cast is SO big with these tiny episodes. That being said, I still think seasons 1-9 had great stories, pacing and they allowed us to get to know all the queens because they were edited well (unlike season 15).
I don’t necessarily fully disagree with myself in the vid since I still love seasons 1-9. But I also don’t fully agree either with myself here either.
I wouldn’t mind the 40 min episodes if (thinking of season 15 here) they didn’t take up 10 minutes of every episode with the mirror scene crying awful childhood trauma stories (is that an unpopular DR opinion? Did I do it? 😂)
I understand we want to get to know the queens better and in earlier seasons when the sad stories seemed to come out organically, I didn’t mind… but now they seem so produced and forced. And it’s like every episode too. I don’t watch drag race to watch drag queens cry and make me depressed dang it!
@@KG9551 agree, and the problem is that those mirror scenes started during the longer episode era, when we could take 10 minutes doing that and still have a fully-formed episode. but now that they're a common feature of the show, the editors wanted to include them in season 15 even though it meant cutting the content we care more about seeing. the 40-minute episodes of seasons 1-9 didn't have those.
I prefer the 40 minute episodes. Period. If the editors aren't good enough to tell a story in 40 minutes ....what are they doing? We have 20 minute cartoons that tell more story than some drag race episodes tell in 90 minutes.

The Makeover is one of the worst "classic" challenges of the franchise. The judging is always iffy, one of my favorites is usually sent home in this episode and the queens kinda lost their protagonism to become Fairy Godmothers to their made-overs.
I 100% agree about the judging. It really is the “we can send anyone we want home without any justification” episode of every season #JusticeForCherylHole
the judging is always so bad for makeovers but the episodes are always the most feel-good then u get a kick to the stomach

Yes the guide lines are always blurred; sometimes they want same outfits (that are just brought from home) sometimes they want cool unique different looks and what they count as “drag family resemblance” is always inconsistent

i think lipsyncing for the crown is fine but it should be individual and a song that the queens pick themselves because everybody has a different style
Yeah I totally understand why people like the S14 finale format more (and it’s definitely more fair lol). But to me, I still enjoy the “oh my God. Two of my faves are against each other. Whose gonna survive?” energy of the LSFTC.
I love the personal songs for esch queen (I still listen to Fat, Femme and Asian) but I do agree that the last 2 should lip sync against each other

I think it’s still so great. The concept of it where the crown grows onto her head, the gasp moment when she was revealed, the royalty of how she sells that dress. It’s iconic not just because of of the look but also the moment and how the garment was sold

FINALLY somebody giving canada season 1 its flowers. it is probably one of my favorite seasons ever just because it harkens back to season 2 style chaos and foolishness and overall fun. it was way better than season 2 which was the opposite, having all the polish and budget but no heart, and im so happy season 3 combined the two in a way and is an objectively strong season.

I feel like the queens hard carried AS1 and that's it's biggest problem. They had such a terrific cast and proactively worked against. It almost stings more thinking about how great it could've been.

i just rewatched as1 and i was kinda entertained throughout? i was confused bc i expected to hate it alot more. we'll never have such an iconic cast all together at once unless all winners 2 gets the casting we deserve

My unpopular opinions:
1. I actually quite like the snatch game of love. It switches up the formula and allows for some fun answers and interactions.
2. Half the time I skip the lipsync for your life/legacy. I just find the lipsyncs uninteresting and the winner is usually obvious before the lipsync even starts.
3. All stars 5 should've had a double crowning for Jujubee and Shea.
4. More older queens need to be cast on the show. Since season 13, there's been a lack of experienced queens in favour of young queens who all look the same, have the same style of drag, and rely on lipsyncs to get by.
5. All Stars seasons are a way for Ru to crown her favourites and the riggory is beyond obvious. All stars 1 was for Chad Michaels, 2 was for Alaska, 3 was made for Bendelacreme before she eliminated herself, 4 was made for Manila before she was eliminated, 5 was for Shea, 6 seemed to be in Ginger's favour before the final lipsync, and 8 is definitely for Jimbo (why else would she be cast on a non-international season?).
6. Sasha Velour's returning look was better than Violet's.
7. Shuga Cain would've made top 4 if production gave a shit about her
its crazy how the lsfyl used to be my absolute highlight of every episode in earlier seasons, but nowadays (i think s10 onwards) it seems like the winner of the lsfyl is predetermined no matter how well they actually perform. also the performances have somehow gotten boring, and i dont know if thats factual or just fatigue

@RunnerEye I actually saw another video essay person say "what if they were early outs for a reason" and I can totally understand that from a production casting standpoint which is probably why this upcoming Allstars is a half and half split of early outs and top 6s. I'm excited.
You are so right though, All Stars 1 was like…not GOOD but I was entertained. And the untucked from Ep. 1 is one of the top moments from the show ever! Compare that to Down Under 1, AS5, Holland 2…it’s not the worst by a long stretch.

ive always said (and its not just because im from canada and knew some of the queens before hand lmfao) that Canada season 1 has one of the best new casts of all time. the show didnt have the budget to succeed with their cast but EVERY single queen from that season is so sickening and has gone on to do well outside the show

I agree that there have been other amazing looks like Violet's since hers, but for me that dress is all about the MOMENT. I watched the finale when it was airing and I still remember how my heart stopped when I saw her appear in that dress. I GASPED, everyone did. She looked so regal and otherworldly... It's simply something you don't forget. The dress (and the whole look) is amazing on its own but seeing it in the moment and in the context of the finale was what made it so iconic. I haven't kept up with all the later seasons on RPDR so there very well may be a look that would top it for me, but it will forever be my favourite memory of a RPDR look.

I LOVE the lip sync between Heidi and Jackie which was a double shantay..... one of my favourite lip syncs on S12. Two different approaches, stunts, camp, both interacted with each other. Jackie and Heidi got very emotional.
I dont care what the stupid fandom says about that lip sync. I really enjoy it all the time.

I agree so hard about Violet's Season 8 Finale look not being the best look ever. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful look and the construction of the dress is lovely. But when you look past the prosthetics and the snitched in waist, it becomes not so unique. There are simply looks that I personally find more iconic and beautiful like Kim Chi's mom look from the Book Ball, Rock M Sakura's Tulle dress, Utica's Sleeping Bag Dress, a lot of Jaida's looks, Shea's skin look from AS5. Those were just some looks of the top if my head that I think of more often than I think of Violet's S8 look.

blu vs mo wasn't necessarily bad. i think it was okay. compared to shea vs monet it obviously loses. blu's moves fit the song well and she didn't just randomly start doing every move she knew BUT the execution of those moves... was wildly crusty😭 very white girl who's "so into voguing right now"
I genuinely unironically really like Blu’s dance moves and will defend them to the day I pass. They ascend me to a higher state of being.
also people were pulling on Mo for not doing shablams and stunts but i think she really gave a nice clean lipsync, i really enjoyed it. its kinda tiring to see 5 splits every lipsync anyway, and i think they both gave a fun enjoyable lipsync in their own style ❤
Unpopular opinion. I don’t disagree with any decision that lead to Tamisha and Denali’s eliminations in season 13, despite how much I love both queens.
Mik def should’ve been low for discomentary, but she at least gave energy where Tamisha didn’t. And it fully made sense to judge the makeover challenge as teams the same way they’ve judged every other challenge where queens are paired up.
Other unpopular take is I think a runway should be able to save a queen from the bottom if it’s significantly strong enough even if they did the worst in the challenge. See Veronica getting saved with her Medusa runway in UK2. Cuz otherwise what’s the point of having runways each episode.

Because the purpose of it wasn't to excite the audience by ruvealing but to enhance her performance. It isn't as bomabstic as Silky's or Yvie's because it has an actual purpose than just showing odf.
Violet's look is also far away from being my fav... And I also prefer there shorter episodes. I just watched DRE3 and its 1h 20m episodes felt so long for no reason.

Canada's Drag Race season 1 is great if you can ignore the judging. I'm glad I watched it because the talent is great but the judging is really hard to get over and I found myself cursing at them
I gotta agree with you on AS1. I feel like it really had so much potential, and objectively, the teams format screwed over some talented queens. That said, it is so iconic in so many ways that I can't really hate it as a whole. I just hate the teams format.

My unpopular opinions:
1-Not all of the international franchises are created equal and we need to stop shaming people for keeping up with their favorite especially if their favorite is the original US flagship.
2-The fandom is not toxic. They are just passionate and enjoying the show. We need to stop shaming them for having opinions.
3- Silky should have won AS6. AS6 was a good season but not as good as people give it credit for.
4 - AS8 has become quite an entertaining and cutthroat competition and history will look back on it favorably.
5 - Shangela did not deserve to win AS3. Dela or Kennedy made more sense as winners but Trixie was the right decision for WoW.

Here’s what I think they should have done with All Stars 1
Since they were limited to 6 episodes, and they wanted a decent sized cast, instead of having teams, they should have done a bottom 3, instead of a bottom 2. Think about it, this is All Stars we’re talking about, the best of the best, so make it so that one little slip up could send you end the bottom. Also, to keep it at 6 episodes, eliminate two of the bottom queens each week, and have one win the lip sync.
I probably didn’t articulate this that well, but I hope it can be at least understood
This is a really interesting format for a season! I wonder how the season would have played out with this kind of format.
@@RunnerEye I feel like the first two eliminated probably would have been Mimi and Tammie, mainly because of they were eliminated early on there original seasons, and production wouldn’t want them to go far. I feel like Pandora would have made it farther, Probably not too 3, but definitely top 4 or 5. Everything else however, I’d have to do more of an in depth analysis.

I don’t think all stars should be just front runners but also there should definitely be a bigger gap between seasons so those queens can have more time after their run to really grow and have us miss them a bit more

I don’t mind the 40 minute format, but the production needs to FILM for the 40 minute format. There’s a way to give the queens the proper format needed to showcase their package, but the production needs to film for storylines that can be filmed in 40-min time slots and not be overloaded with content that they have to pick and choose what is crucial enough to keep.
Definitely agree on the episode length. It should’ve been 40 min and all stars once every two years or something. Ultimately quality over quantity, we are getting so much drag race that the quality goes down. Things that used to be hyped like a double save or double boot or split premier are now boring cause it’s all the time

Even though the makeover challenges are bullshit because of the crappy judging (it’s basically a chance for the producers to save/eliminate whoever they want to because it’s so hard to judge a challenge like that, as a lot of it is subjective), I think the process in the workroom is great for storytelling because a lot of the time the Queens get to show their softer side with people who they aren’t directly competing against. So like the challenge as a whole is bullshit but for storytelling narratives it’s pretty useful imo.

I watch drag race at 1,25x or 1,5x and slow down during lipsyncs, ocasionally during runways, never been happier
I think that the 1 hr format gives to the larger cast size that the show has to fill for the contracted amount of episodes. Other than that I think that the 40 minute length can be just as fulfilling as an hr. I also agree that seeing the queens on drag race for a 3rd time is actually a good thing bc I think sometimes production is too fast to cast the girls on all-stars right after their season when there hasn't been a chance for all-stars level growth,.
I don't think Drag Race All Stars should only be stacked with frontrunner queens...
But I do think that maybe pumping the brakes and doing it every other year or something would be appreciated and help with the extreme burnout I've had with drag race the last couple of years

The worst seasons are Season 8, and the last six seasons straight, save for season 11. All Stars 1 is a perfectly fine season, I still watch it from time to time.
my unpopular opinion/hot take is that they did that whole “look we’ve got singers” at the S6 finale with adore and courtney but i honestly think S5 had better singers in it’s top 3 than S6

Not sure how unpopular this is, but All Stars 5 was less entertaining as a season than AS1.
Also unpopular, but I thought the post apocalapkik (sic) outfit from The Princess was awesome, despite Michelle’s critiques.
I totally agree about the 1h vs 40min format
