  • In 1941, American novelist John Dos Passos wrote, “In times of change and danger when there is a quicksand of fear under men’s reasoning, a sense of continuity with generations gone before can stretch like a lifeline across the scary present.” The study of American history can give us the courage necessary to confront the challenges we face in uncertain times. Based on Dr. Wilfred McClay’s U.S. history textbook, A Land of Hope: An Invitation to the Great American Story, this online course examines the people, events, and ideas that have made America a land of hope from its discovery to the present day.

Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.
The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.
By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

Having just graduated from Liberty University Online with an undergrad degree in history, I have to say that desire was sparked by the free online courses from Hillsdale and the fact that I could not attend Hillsdale College in person to obtain that degree. I do enjoy the online courses from Hillsdale, still, as they are important for all Americans to take. Thank you for offering these courses online.

When a people stop studying history, it doesn't mean they won't have to learn it.
It just means they'll get to learn it more intensely, intimately, and tangibly.
    They will learn by experience.

Our understanding of the past isn't fixed. By that we are understanding by discovering and discussing the past. This is a good thing because it teaches us and hopefully lets us avoid repeating mistakes. Well that is what it used to do now it's to show how white people victimized POS

I never had more respect and gratitude for the freedoms I enjoy than while I was studying the historical trials, tribulations, and immense sacrifices that granted me such. And to see such being accosted without any true opposition, as we have become apathetic to politics, by design of politicians, both breaks my heart and enrages my soul. Admittedly, a small part of me longs to have the apathetic masses reap what they sow, for there are none to blame save ourselves. However, I'd far rather the masses, myself included, to put away the distractions, only speak on that which you know to be true, set aside our egos, and come together in an understanding that though we may have divergent beliefs, opinions, et cetera, we have far more in common than not. For the most part, we all yearn to be free. And yet, most of us seek out a structure to adhere to in order to simplify our lives, which is completely understandable, dare I say vital. I believe history to be what we depend upon to give us a contextual foundation. Similar to the various religious doctrines, which act as a sorta scaffolding, each designed to alleviate the anxiety of the ever beckoning unknown through the guidance and answers they provide. After all, none of us know the true meaning of life. That said, we do have the ability to identify, acknowledge, and pursue meaning wherever, or whenever we find or seek it out. I know that I would be lost without guidance from my life's guides. You see, history allows me to choose from the best of all time. Just as the various doctrines have provided me with insights derived from similar tethering across them. Such inquiry is vital to one's growth within and understanding of the mysterious journey known to us as life. The fact that we must endure, explore, and enjoy said journey as conscious beings, all the while being ultimately alone in our experience, requires as much forethought from those of days past as possible. If not for anything else, then so one may endure it gracefully, rather than with the foolhardiness of the willfully ignorant, or blindly obedient.
I appreciate you taking the time to read my comment. Take care and God bless.

@@SW-zt7mv I appreciate that. Although, such insights have been learned by way of ceaseless curiosity and a genuine yearning for what approximates the truth of being, they aren't mine to lay claim to. They are an amalgamation of various great minds that came before me. And therefore, my connection based meta-analysis surely is prone to the innate flaws of all conscious beings. Learning is a sort of addiction for me. I deeply enjoy taking religious doctrines, philosophy, psychology, quantum mechanics, neurobiology, et cetera, as well as historical context and accounts, relating them to events of today, then extrapolating in order to derive an approximation of what is likely to come to fruition. I wholeheartedly believe that our education is sorely lacking the fundamental axioms required to have a well-informed and balance society, capable of being the keepers and preservers of freedom. That said, I, too, believe that we are plagued by apathy and the inability to see beyond our own self-interests, and so to paraphrase V from V for Vendetta, "To see the responsible party, one only need look into a mirror." I believe that movie to be a master class on human nature. You see, the technological horizon, it's zenith being AI, is one that is a near absolute power, which shall be wielded by someone, and that terrifies me. We all know that famous quote of Lord Acton about absolute power, but allow me to quote another. “Liberty has not only enemies which it conquers, but perfidious friends, who rob the fruits of its victories: Absolute democracy, socialism.” - Lord Acton.
The duality of mankind has always interested me. None more so than our darkest nature. The beast within, if you will. Ergo, I strive for balance in my actions. However, having confronted both my shadow and the horrors of our collective shadow, I believe that we are standing upon a precipice, starring into the abyss, but most are too scared to look, let alone do something about it. We have become unconscious ID creatures in many cases, and when the debt bubble bursts, we shall awaken to a world in which we devour one another. I sincerely hope that I'm wrong in this. I'd like to note that economic crisis, angst ignored, and the need to silence those whom aren't in agreement with your worldview, as society divided itself along ideological lines, has been played out before in 1930's Germany. There shadow nearly consumed the world.
I don't wish to take up too much of your time, and I, too, have much to do, so I'll end this impromptu tangent by quoting a man I greatly admire. A fellow INFJ, Martin Luther king Jr, "One has not only a legal, but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws."
      Take care and God bless.

Okay, so he starts his argument by citing Aristotle on how history is fixed and "objective." Then he uses Herodotus as his first example of somebody writing history. But everybody agrees by now that Herodotus was a shameless propagandist. Herodotus just spends all his time dissing non-Greeks. We had to revise EVERYTHING that Herodotus ever told us about any non-Greek people, especially the Persians. So I suppose that means that history isn't fixed after all
    - it's in constant need of revision, because every generation of historians produces some propagandists like Herodotus.

"This alone is denied even to God: to make what has been not to have been." -0:00, quoting Aristotle
The speaker would do well to get a second opinion about Aristotle's myth.
    For example:
    (a) with God, all things are possible (Matthew 19:26),
and, specific to God's ability and authority to rewrite history:
    (b) though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow (Isaiah 1:18).
