I know. It's pretty sad how James Gandolfini's poor health made him look much older, and he died barely having made it past 50 due to poor health. It was essential to his character, but it was a curse and a blessing that established his legacy.
his face is quite youthful, it's the early balding look that ages him. he doesn't look like a movie star or anything but it's believable so many women still found him attractive despite being more paunchy earlier on at least.
One of the recurring elements in the Sopranos series is the addictions. Money, drugs, alcohol, gambling and sex. Tony is addicted to sex. As Christopher said, "You're one of the biggest cooze hounds around. You'd fokka catcher's mitt." One of Tony's narcissistic traits is constantly highlighted throughout the series. His lack of impulse control. With the women he meets, he truly is a cooze hound. Irena, Gloria, Valentina, Sonya all have one thing in common, the need for money. So, it's transactional with Tony. He doesn't mind it either. That's how he treats his daughter and his wife, gifts and money.
AJ forms a relationship with Rhiannon because they are codependents in their shared and contrasting mental difficulties. I understand and agree with the point that both his and his father is later relationships seem to spring out of nowhere, but they are borne from two completely different situations.
What you mention are the individual circumstances, which are also relevant, but I was examining the overarching and persistent themes and tendencies we see in Tony and AJ.
That's valid, and I would say their different approaches to depression create different types of relationships/results. Tony is very dependent upon satisfying his urges, subconsciously thinking he "deserves them" based on his choice of occupation. King syndrome. AJ is looking for actual love, he's just too codependent and indecisive to be functionally sound. When he was much younger he couldn't deal with a richer girl (Devon Pillsbury) and broke it off bc of his insecurities. But he's not the womanizer his father is, even though the urges that cause their individual behavior is similar.
yeah but i felt like AJ's relationship with rihannon was actually fairly healthy. it seemed like they both understood what the other was going through, which is something that AJ probably wouldnt have gotten from his family. now that i think of it i think AJ's relationships with devon and blanca were actually surprisingly healthy too. although it was moreso because Devon and Blanca were actually normal well adjusted people unlike tonys girlfriends who were as crazy as livia.
I think when it came to Sonya, and correct if I'm wrong because I haven't watched Sopranos in a while, but I think it wasn't out of left field she was introduced. Tony meets her shortly or relatively short, after Christopher's death and she did used to see Chris on the side. I think Tony is being eaten up by the guilt of Christopher and his going to see her is a way of him covertly trying to connect with a thing in Christopher's life, because isn't with her that he trips acid or something in the desert? Then yells at the top of his lungs that he did it, admitting his guilt and somewhat confronting it? I think she represents the closest thing to Christopher that Tony is gonna find, in order to gain closure.
I agree with your reading, but I wasn't saying there wasn't any other narrative logic behind Sonya, as the writers obviously thought about that very thoroughly. Sonya, in specific, and the whole Vegas stint was absolutely tied mainly to Christopher's storyline as you mentioned, but I still think she is relevant when examining Tony as a character and the show in its entire scope. The short-lived relationship she shares with Tony serves as an exemplar of his archetypal treatment of the opposite sex.
@@adamralph113 I agree, she's another fine example of what Dr. Melphie is talking about when she mentions to Tony he doesn't need to eat every sandwich.
Gotta disagree. He had zero guilt over Christopher's death, rather a feeling of righteous anger. If anything, getting with his nephew's old mistress was a way of him gloating or getting back at Chris for sleeping with the real estate lady.
@pasjan1183 I think it's a mixed bag, I believe you're correct but part of him did feel guilt. The ending of that episode alone is him expressing as much.
hey Adam, dont know how I ended up here, but this is a wonderful video. Loved your interpretation and editing, really made me interested in what you were saying 👍
Omg, this is sooo good man. Never really thought about but it’s so interesting. How did you come to the aj and Tony parallel? Also puss become an informant bc he was selling H and got caught. Good video :D
Thanks! Yeah of course, but if Tony had really treated Pussy better he might have not flipped out of respect and admiration for his friend, that was what I meant.
Tony was supposed to be in his "late thirties" at the start of the show.. He looked like early fifties for sure.

@@adamralph113 people at the same age looked older by default then
his balding hair definitely made him look quite a bit older but even if he had a full head of hair in season one he still looks like he's like 45

Aj literally had 1 hot girl the rich blonde
At least Tony passed down one good gene
Sleezeeball gang
Excellent analysis. Thanks for sharing your perspective on this element of this ground breaking series.
Thank you, my friend. I'm glad you think I provided you with something of value.
Missed an opportunity here to call the video "The Many Goomah of Tony Soprano"

i think svetlana the one legged russian lady was the mistress tony respected the most
Who's the lady at 5:35?
It's a secret.
Can anyone give the name of all the actresses in this video ?

Melfy and Meadow ate the only people who aren't awful.
The New Vegas girl...ooof madone
My vote is for The D Girl. But in her younger prime, Sara S is the best.
The d girl was very flat, no boobs or ass
