I love Larry Murphy. He was an integral part of the Red Wings back to back Stanley Cups and along with Mickey Redmond and Ken Daniels he's been a great part of the Red Wings broadcast team for many years.
He was the defensive Shanny, once brought in, we made it to the top of the mountain

@@klompsauce Indeed. Everyone credits Shanahan with being the final piece of the puzzle to get the Wings over the hump, but Larry Murphy was just as important. His play in the Finals against the Lindros line in '97 really helped make that a short series.
I have that same exact Larry Murphy #206 Card. And I have every cards #1-#439 as well as the B numbered (B1-B5) and T Numbered (1T-105T) cards
Larry Murphy has said that he was never a great skater, but he compensated for it with smarts, accuracy, and responsibility. I often feel that one of the marks of greatness is turning your weakness into a strength. He's a prime example of that.

@Todd Peterson I was replying to the original poster lol but thank you for the comment. Leetch and Messier are my 2 favorite Rangers of all-time. The 90's were stacked with great defensemen so it's a miracle to me that Leetch won 2 Norris Trophies. Lidstrom was great but had literally nobody to compete against. A weak era for Dmen which is why he has 7 Norris Trophies.

A favorite player; hated seeing my Kings trade him for basically nothing. Great career and deserving HOF.

he played in an era where there was actual "hockey trades" and a good team was always able to put his talent/leadership to good use....as for the leafs part-now you know why they havent won since'67....media/fans too busy chasing good players out and playing the 'blame game"....

As a Kings fan looked around and found this to explain why Kings traded him :
Murphy had a great rookie season, but after head coach Bob Berry was fired on May 22, 1981, friction developed between Murphy and the coaching staff.
Replacing Berry was Parker MacDonald, who served as head coach for about six months until Don Perry was hired on January 11, 1982.
Both MacDonald, and especially Perry, expected Murphy to play a much more physical game than he had ever played before, something that was never part of his game.
“He was such a laid back person, and that’s the way he played,” said former Kings left wing Charlie Simmer, a member of the famed Triple Crown Line with Marcel Dionne and Dave Taylor. “He was misunderstood. He was a bigger guy, and that was the era of fighting, the Broad Street Bullies [Philadelphia Flyers] and the Big, Bad Bruins [Boston Bruins].”
“They were always trying to get him into that type of mode, but that’s not him,” added Simmer, who played with Murphy throughout the time Murphy was with the Kings. “His game, as we saw through his whole career, was a point-getting, calm defenseman. He didn’t change, other than he just got better and better with confidence and experience.”
Rather than adapt their coaching style and tactics to the players on the roster, MacDonald, and especially Perry, stubbornly and foolishly forced their players into a particular mold and style of play, which included more hitting and fighting. This proved to be a huge mistake, especially with a player of Murphy’s caliber.
“The key for a player is to be effective,” Murphy noted. “There are different ways to skin a cat, right? When Bob Berry was here, that was not the case. He had patience. He expected me to play well in my own zone, be responsible, and cover my man. If I did that, if I was effective, defensively, that’s all he wanted.”
“Different guys bring different things to the table, but it’s consistent throughout the lineup,” Murphy added. “You expect everybody to be able to cover their man, move the puck, don’t give it away, be smart. Beyond that, guys have different ways to be [effective and contribute]. Good coaches see that, and they utilize guys that way. Poor coaches are guys who put you into a mold. Things got crazy here in that sense, and that’s not how I was going to be an effective player out there.”
“Good coaches demand a level of smart play. But they let the player achieve it by utilizing their best skills.”

I was fortunate enough to see him play as a rookie out in LA twice, and I was always a huge fan of his. Thanks for doing this video, too many people forget how good of a player he was. That whole disaster in Toronto was a joke...Leafs fans don't know anything about hockey.
I've always thought that Murphy was underrated. Whenever he was on the ice, the other team had to pay attention to him, and that made other guys like Ulf Samulelsson or Slava Fetisov better.
Love these career videos on underappreciated players from the past, it's great hearing about players that played well before I started watching hockey
He was one of those role players later in his career that helped Pittsburgh and Detroit win their Stanley Cups.
Yeah, but, his later career would have been wasted had he stayed there longer, that team fell off a cliff, after, 1993, until 2009, that is.

I meet him when I was in grade 8 at an autograph signing, and as a life long Red Wings fan I was crushed because he was not a very nice guy. I just remember he was like “ok, here’s your autograph, who’s next.” I want to give him the benefit he was just having a bad day.
I've met him several times and he's always been really nice. He's a quiet, unassuming guy, which is why I find it funny he's in broadcasting now.
I think Murphy also had a good showing at the '87 Canada Cup, if I recall correctly.
The idea of points making a defenseman "good" makes me want to see more videos about defensemen (or even forwards) that made their goalie's jobs easier. As you mentioned Rod Langway in this video as a good example of that sort of thing, others like Derian Hatcher, Brad McCrimmon, or ones you grew up with that you loved on your teams or greatly respected.
Murphy was huge for Detroit. In the ‘97 playoffs he and Lidström were paired up against the opposing teams’ best lines, including Colorado’s and Philly’s Legion of Doom. Did a great job shutting them down and contributing to Vernon’s Conn Smythe (Vernon had a 1.76 GAA that run). And despite going against opposing teams’ best players he went +16 in the playoffs which led the team and I’m pretty sure was tops across all players.
The #2 defensive pairing in those playoffs was Konstantinov and Fetisov as well…amazing top-4 D they had that year.
Watching him on home ice in Toronto. Poor guy. Those fans never gave him a break. Constant Boo’s

Funny enough I met him a few years ago at the stadium series between Colorado and Detroit, I actually was able to play nhl 16 against him. Smoked him obviously. But he signed a picture to me saying I got lucky. Really nice guy

Murphy had a big influence on Lidstrom. Without Murphy who knows how good Nick would have been. Thanks to Toronto for giving up on him

Smooth skating, calm, creative, quick thinking and never did anything flashy. Just what you want from a D-man......he also invented the flip dump without icing the puck.
Murphy was a solid under the radar defenseman for a very long time. Not flashy but skilled, outstanding puck mover and passer. Smooth and efficient in everything he did. Was never a great pure defender, but was definitely above average in that regard

There were times on the broadcasts where it seemed as though he was really slurring his words or struggling to formulate a complete thought. I do not want to perpetuate rumors, especially considering he's been great since returning to the broadcast team. If, IIIIIIIFFFFF, he was let go due to a drinking problem and he was able to get himself squared away, that's a great redemption arch for a heck of a player and an interesting analyst.
It may have been head injuries, given the substantial length of his career, that might prove to be a more likely explanation.

Shows you a lot about the Detroit organization when so many players stick with the organization after retirement. Murph was steady on the blueline and a great breakout passer. Yes, he was constantly overshadowed by Lidstrom, Bourke and Chelios but nobody plays 20 years in the NHL without being a stud. Well deserved HOF induction.

Nice story...with all the great players in the 80s and 90s it was easy to get lost in the shuffle...hats off to Larry Murphy..BTW.... maybe an episode on the Sutter brothers...and don't forget Joey and Brian Mullen...
I saw Murphy play at the Capital Centre in Landover as a Cap many nights. Early on there were times I thought he was the best defenseman on the Caps. His points may have been down but the Caps were not playing such a wide open offensive style with Bryan Murray as coach, (if they had, they might have kept Maruk). A lot of fans in Washington never took to Larry and were too tough on him. Later they would yell "Whoops! Whoops! Whoops!" when he'd get the puck at the point on the power play and I think he let it affect his game. He had some clutch moments with the Caps. I remember a regular season game where he scored 2 goals and an assist and was number 1 star. At one point during the game, there was a 2 on 1 break where he was back. The Capital Centre went silent but he made a beautiful poke check, knocking the puck off one of the skaters' stick and broke it up. He just didn't take the opposing player into tomorrow like Langway or Stevens might have. In another game, I remember him scoring a goal with less than a minute in the third period, either to tie the game or to go ahead by 1, (I think the later). Of course there was the headman pass that sprung Dale Hunter who scored in game 7 against the Flyers in o.t. I am glad he won the cups he did, even if two of them were with the Penguins.
Fantastic dman. I'm an Isles fan so I have no bias here. Great two way dman. I never understood how so many teams let him go. Shame on Toronto fans for booing him out of town.
Miss him as a Capital. It was so hard seeing him as a Penguin!!
He would have stayed longer had the Penguins not broken up overnight, oh, the Spring of 1993, when everything was perfect in Pittsburgh, until it wasn't.

Kinda crazy that he never won a Norris trophy when you look at his career stats like that. Kinda reminds me of John Carlson in that way. Puts up big numbers every year, but somehow never wins the Norris. Both Caps legends too.
Interesting to discuss about who's the greatest defenceman who hasn't won the Norris Trophy. Larry Myrphy is definitely a serious candidate for that title.
I'd throw Adam Foote into that discussion, he was so, much like Rod Langway, but, he was never that good offensively, and, that really cost him.
If Evan Bouchard can be 10% of Larry Murphy, that’s a win for Edmonton.
Top 5 biggest trade mistake of Toronto...He deserved his cup in Detroit !
I don't know if you ever did that video on players who came in strong and faded fast, but near the top of that list would have to be Guy Chouinard. Scored 50 goals in his third season, averaged over 1.27ppg from '78-'82, tapered off for a couple of seasons then was retired from the NHL by age 27. Not due to injury or anything either, he got demoted to the IHL at the start of '84 and just packed it in after 9 games. I looked up Ken Houston's career, and it doesn't really seem to match with the "came in really strong and didn't last long" model. He had 11 points in 38 games his rookie year, then settled in to the 40-50 point range pretty much every year after that. So really kind of the opposite of coming in strong, and while his career wasn't extraordinarily long, it wasn't short either, 8 full seasons, retiring at age 31.
Larry Murphy's career totals are insane and it seems like he quietly did it too.

I could tell in the 99-00/00-1 season he was pretty much done. During the playoffs he was getting beat a lot. Milan Hejduk from Colorado was clearly whipping by him.
If I also recall correctly. In the 2001-2002 season, Colorado was looking for a veteran depth defensemen and I think they talked to him but went with Todd Gill instead.

Another name to add for the started strong, didn't last career would be Jimmy Carson. 141 goals in his first 240 games/first three seasons. Then 134 goals in 386 games, for the rest of his career.
Not to mention that the first lines of his obit will read, traded for Wayne Gretzky, and, didn't even stick around town long enough to win a Cup merely by showing up.
@@haraldgriefbacon1373 The stat that always stood out to me about Carson, was the number of power play goals. I think his ratio of PP goals to even strength goals in his first 3-4 years, was something like 45%. So, if you're not on the PP, you won't score goals. In Detroit, he was third line center, and not getting the PP time.

Larry "Murph" is a great play by play announcer, but was let go after some episodes of un-professionalism while on the job. With Darren Elliot (who sucked) moving from FoxDetroit over to LV Golden Knights, Larry was brought back on a probation status and he still is a great announcer but a bit of a homer. Stats aside Larry turned the tide for the Red Wings roster after being cast off by Toronto. Scotty Bowman leap at the chance to add the veteran to the roster.

The Capitals of the late 80’s had Scott Stevens, Rod Langway, Larry Murphy, and Mike Gartner. Four Hall of Famers and they didn’t even manage to get to the Stanley Cup Final. How?

Career of Bob Probert
He's basically Scott Stevens without the hardware, and/or, Dale Hunter without the production, without hockey, he's a pimp, or, a legbreaker, unquestionably.
An interesting series might be looking at one Year wonders. As I have done before in comments I can give an NFL example because I know it more but I want you to teach me some examples of this in the NHL. So an example is Peyton Hillis who about 8-9 years ago became this breakout runningback for the Browns and even got voted to be the cover of Madden 12, and then he never did much after that one year and never did much before that year either. Pretty much that one year and being on the cover of the game are all he is known for. The year after his 1100 yard and 11 TD rushing and 2 receiving TD season he had half as many yards rushing and only 3 rushing TD with none receiving. And his first year he had 300 some odd yards. With every year after the 550 yard season going down in production with 309,247 and 115 his last year rushing and nothing impressive receiving either.

Leafs have a bad habit of putting really good secondary players in leading roles and being surprised when they can't lead. Murphy, Kessel, Versteeg, Blake.....
It went on for far longer than that, they, somehow, thought Doug Gilmour, Wendel Clark, and, Felix Potvin, were leaders of men, when they really were all simply massive underachievers.
Toronto booed Murphy out of town and let me tell you it was well justified.
How? Looking at the stats. His first yr there he was almost a point a game. The 2nd yr wasn't has good. Did he have an injury that yr? Because he came back and wins back to back cups.
Brady Williams This is one of those cases where stats don’t tell the whole story.By the time he landed in Toronto he was starting to get up there in age.(mid thirties)
His foot speed was most notably slower.He kept getting hemmed in his own zone.It was clear the other teams targeted him on the forecheck.He was a turnover machine.
Think Jake Gardiner x2 minus the skating ability.
He was quite good on the powerplay.I wont take that away from him.Thats is where most of the stats came from.
On top of all that he had that personality where he wouldn’t take responsibility.
It just rubbed people the wrong way I think
In Detroit however he was well insulated.That team was absolutely stacked.
Yzerman,Federov,Shanahan,Larionov,Lidstrom,Konstantinov,Fetisov.
Along with good support players Kozlov, Lapointe, and Mccarty,to name a few.
He just needed to be a support player.I really don’t think he spent nearly as much time in his own zone to be targeted.
To his credit though he seemed rejuvenated.Detroit was a team that wanted him I think he felt more appreciated there and that motivated him.
In any case it wasn’t a good fit in Toronto.He was much more exposed there.
