This is the best advertisement that this shop could ask for. Excellent service and actually treated the customer like a peer. Pat basically has tenure now
Even the behind the scenes trash talk was real mellow. When I worked at a custom bike shop as a mechanic we would roast some of the "idiot" customers that came through...I'd be scared if I found out our chats were filmed lol. Great shop and great mechanic...love to see it.
I'm also one of those weirdos that likes to just see is something would work. Became a machinist a few years back and that has really helped gear up the weirdness in my projects...like altering a hub on a lathe 😆
@@Nick_CF I think that is a big part of why he didn't mention to the customer how ridiculous this upgrade is (besides the parts were already bought and implied sentimental value of the bike). The urge to find out if this was actually possible is way to strong with mechanics.
@@kilianortmann9979 as a mechanic, I can confirm. I had a schwinn protocol 2.7 that came with a 150mm e2e rear shock...and I slapped a 165mm shock in there just for the fun of seeing if it would actually work. To my absolute amazement, IT DID! It was very stiff off the bat, but once it got past that stiffness, it was butter and felt bottomless, like I could ride it on anything. It certainly climbed like nothing I've owned since. It had a Suntour Epixon fork, a Marzocchi rear shock, a TransX Kitsune dropper, continental tires, and I even slapped an SLX derailleur and XT hubs on it. The only thing schwinn left on it was the frame and the saddle, lol. It was unfortunately stolen and parted out, and I let the guy who found my frame keep it for his own build. I had already moved on to building another, and then I heard a crack sound that I thought was the frame, so I abandoned that and salvaged most of its parts to build my current trail bike, which I just put under an overhaul. I just replaced my shift cable and housing, bottom bracket and crankset, rear hub, and both tires. I'm about to disassemble my suspension, replace the bearings, and lubricate my shock bushings because my suspension is a little creaky and I don't like it.
Seth: when the mechanic sees this SRAM Access shifter he's going to blow a circuit! Non-plussed mechanic: I see what you're up to. I can help with that
Literally the reason that everytime I'm in Brevard I make it a point to go-to Squatch and buy something. They are the MOST down to earth dudes and will never make anyone feel like an outsider. I love how these last two videos showcase their professionalism and passion for customer service.
So true, Mark...I do the same at great shops in towns where I go on mountain biking trips. I may not need anything, but I want to help make sure they'll be there.
Yeah a couple bike shops here and even REI are the biggest douchey snobs. Id totally spend 25% more on a bike and/or parts from a shop like that if I had one local to me.
YT and insta tought me during the last couple of years: there are no pranks without harming innocent persons possible. So,.... Thank YOU for teaching me wrong with this down-to-earth-genuine-prank. and hands down to pats professional behaviour.
Him telling him he played the part perfectly was classic lol. All us mechanics (what you work on doesn't even matter) we all know those weirdo customers that come in with off the wall requests hahaha.
I used to be a computer tech. Right when windows vista came out (it was atrocious at launch) I had a customer come in with his computer and a brand new boxed version of Vista and he wanted me to install it because he had no clue wtf he was doing. He must have paid 150 or 200€ in a store for it. For a computer that was a few years old. Made absolutely no sense. You know what I did ? I told him how much it would cost (a backup + install + backup restoration was not cheap), he said that's cool, so I installed it. In the end he paid a fortune to be a beta tester basically. Very very similar to this story except it wasn't a prank, just a weird customer ...
I had a guy who brought me some trashed old 1980s Grateful Dead skis to have $500 Look Pivot 13s put on them. He rode them for an hour, then came back in to sell us back the bindings for half what he paid, because "the skis don't ride like they used to... or maybe I don't"
i do automotive work and yeah those crazy customers come all the time had a guy bring in a rusted to hell ford ranger and a complete set of brand new Brembo brakes and rotors to install im like seriously thats 3.5k worth of parts and you want me to put it on a truck thats worth 2k at most, OK if it fits ill make it work
This prank was super entertaining and shows what your local bike shop has going for it! I like the direction you’re taking this channel Seth! Keep on dreaming up new ideas!!
The modesty of the formulation ... "I hope you learned something new today, if not I hope you were entertained"... Brilliant. Modest, ambitious but humble. Says a lot about the man you are.
I can't even think of another bike shop where the mechanic would not laugh you out of the store, or give you a little '101' lesson on bikes and parts. It's crazy how cool Pat was about it. Props to Squatch.
Try Efffect in Tokyo. I presented them some weird parts and owner was basically like: "I have never worked with this kind of things before but should be doable and I'll just figure my way out during the process". Great place.
Oh my gosh, I watched the prank video a few minutes ago, and I'm still laughing! I loved this video with all the folks involved! Thank you for this! And Pat is priceless!
Want I learned from this video…makes you look good to keep your composure and to be professional at all times. I was impressed with the mechanic. Seth has great videos. I sure wish he could put them out more frequently.
Great prank, I owned a bike shop for several years back in the 90's and Wheels Manufacturing had great stuff even back then, I remember the brand. I also remember customers coming in and asking for somewhat similar crazy upgrades, expensive forks on rigid bikes, STI shifters on old 70's racers. When you get crazy requests you have to reach out to companies like Wheels that make all sorts of adaptors and shims, and that was actually the most fun you can ever have in my opinion, making things work that shouldn't.
I don't go to bike shops too much, but I haven't for years, because the last one we took my wife's bike to, seemed like it was okay. But when I got there 3 days later to pick up the bike when the said it would be ready, they hadn't even done it. So one employee tells another one, who was probably a trainee to do it real quick. And he put the brakes on backwards. I was impressed that the guy at this bike shop, really knew what he was doing, enough to tell what was going on with the bike and how it shouldn't work, but it did.
That was funny. I still only have 12 speeds on my road bike! (I'm old, so I don't need anything fancy) It's amazing to me that SRAM is so big. I remember in the late 80s when SRAM came into the bike shop I was working at (Two Wheel Transit Authority) pitching the 'New' Grip Shift idea. Nobody at the shop, except Doug Martin and Dave DiBello, thought it was a good idea... Those were the days. Kudos to Pat's professionalism!
Seth becoming a hardcore TV producer. I would have happily watched your Bike Prank or Flip Bike shows on TV back in the day. Streaming services take note.
This entire video is so amazing, but I feel like I need to drive from Vermont to Brevard to visit that shop! Also, Pat might have been "gotcha'd" but holy hell did hie build a seriously nice bike!!! Kudos to Pat!!!!
Excellent, well done...as is the case with all your videos, but this one cranks (pun intended?) it up a few notches. Thanks for bringing some levity to my morning coffee session.
About 8 years ago or so, I picked up a Gary Fisher MB and decided to try and find Sram X.0 group that was the top of the line stuff back then... which I couldn't afford at the time. Dropped about $500 on everything new old stock, think that stuff was about $1600 the year it came out. Included buying a Connex chain in gold, new pedals, leather grips, suspension seat post (thudbuster?). Made it an absolute blast to ride. Then I converted it to electric assist with a BBHSD bottom bracket drive, took longer than I expected to convert due to a big line of weld inside the bottom bracket that I had to grind down. Once I got it dialed in it was a blast. Added a 52v 20ah battery and could cruise at about 35mph.
when i was working on motorcycles in a shop we had a really crazy project brought to us, customer was great and every thing and nothing wrong with the project but in 2016 nobody in the world would think they would be assembling a 1975 Suzuki gt750, commonly known as the water buffalo, from boxes of parts, and while i had very little hand in that as i was a high school student i heard the story about how this came to be, the guy who brought us the project bought it in 75 at the age of 16, that week since his father was against it while the customer was asleep he disassembled it as much as he could, no one in the shop had any issue with taking on this project because it was stored in parts in a house for 40 years with only 40 kilometers on it, so every thing was perfect, it was a dream project to work on honestly.
I live near there and came in just to look and to kill time. Ended up meeting the owner and he knew I wasn't there to buy anything just killing time and he still spent almost 30 minutes shooting the breeze w me. I couldn't believe how professional and incredibly nice he was to chat w someone that wasn't spending money. Beautiful store, lots of stock, knowledgeable staff etc. That's getting harder and harder to find in LBS.
It's like taking an old vehicle, not Your average classic/vintage car and giving it some love and hooking it up. There are tons of "classic" cars out there that nobody cared about at the time or were cheaper cars/whatever you want to call it.
Pat is clearly a great guy, & a capable mechanic. However, IMO, when you have expertise in a given field, you need to be the hero that customers need, rather than the hero they want! The bike was given to you by big bro, & has great sentimental value? Then clean it up, & hang on the garage wall! When you've done that, then let's chat about a cost effective frame, fork, etc, to go with those quality parts you have! (*I realise I'm suffering a sense of humour bypass, here, but that horrific mismatch, triggered me!)

I would love a kickstand on my road bike and mtb. Seriously! It would be funny as hell to hear the comments!
@@BigBisalreadytaken Road bike might be acceptable but on an MTB it's actually dangerous because if it comes lose while you ride that's a big problem
I actually might try to fit one on my road bike
