some people are actually too simple to understand the complexity of the plot in the 2nd and third movie. (More the third then the second). I personally loved the trillogy, 4 isn't cannon and five was just too sad for me to watch. (Depp really was a shell of a shell of the man he was during the first 3)

Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush are unpleasant? Why?
In Depps case, if you’re referring to the Amber Heard incedent, she was proven to be a liar and lost favor of her fans and family from all the Courtroom Drama she cultivated.
Yeah Depp isn’t an Angel either(drugs and all) but he has proven multiple times he’s never abused anyone. He also isn’t the one to take a shit in someone’s bed either, unlike Amber.

Disagree slightly on the "problematic" aspects. I always thought the way the story was told resembled the tale of an old sailor, with all the exaggerations and weird stuff. So the fact that the chinese pirates have spent so much time in their bathhouse that fungi were growing on them was hilarious to me, not racist or problematic. Of course nobody wanted to say that that is how it really is or was. Same with the cannibals.
    But great video!

    • @pewpewpandas9203
      @pewpewpandas9203 2 ปีที่แล้ว +69

Tbh I can't think of a single problematic representation in the movie. All the pirates of different races were treated as equals, the women were pretty much all empowered (Elizabeth obviously, the one Jack owed a boat to in the first movie, even the prostitutes wouldn't take shit from Jack and were constantly slapping him for his BS). As for the cannibals, I thought they were handled quite tastefully. It's not like cannibalistic cultures didn't exist, and they weren't really savages. They had a culture, built huts, bridges and roads, and had tools, agriculture, and a seemingly sophisticated language. Any stereotypes, as you've stated, were exaggerated beyond the point of believability, and as such couldn't be taken seriously. The only thing that might be bad was the voodoo lady from movie 2, but in movie 3 you find out that she can only do voodoo since she's the literal vessel of a god, so I think it slides.

@@TomatoFettuccini Fair enough. It's not that I think it was problematic that voodoo was shown at all, I just worry that it wasn't shown properly. I'm not at all an expert on voodoo or how it's practiced, but I worry that for the use of it in the movie, they probably didn't look into it too much. It would be like how American Indians are often portrayed in movies as generic tribes people with mystical knowledge of nature and feather headdresses. It's taking the aesthetic without respecting the actual culture. I don't know if that's the case for sure, as again I don't really know much about voodoo, but I think it's a safe bet to make.

Because if you’re referring to Depp and Amber, the case came out that she was the abuser, not him. And as for Geoffrey Rush, he was proven innocent on any allegations. Loved this video. I'd disagree on some points, but not because I think you're wrong, I'm just a weirdo. You see, I thought the Keith Richards cameo was great, from a storytelling perspective. From the sound of it, it was going to happen whether anyone wanted it to or not, but the way they handled it was genius, I think.
First, they assigned Richards to an essential plot device: Keeper of the Code, a Lawful-Neutral character scary enough to force the Brethern Court to act outside of their kneejerk, selfish instincts, and someone who can ultimately be pointed like a weapon by anyone clever enough to game the rules. He's a character the story needed to move forward regardless of who played him or what his relationship to Jack was.
And from a meta-perspective, it just makes sense that Jack's "Mother Mary" is Keith Richards. Also, I think it's hilarious that two legendary Pirate Lords were at a stalemate, so one told on the other to his dad.

The Davy Jones saga alone elevates the movies, and the story itself is extremely ambitious. And good grief-- the ENDING of At World's End? A bittersweet and even tragic finale for all involved. For anybody who is always praising the first movie to be the best. I have been studying 1-3 and I constantly re-watch them. Pirates of the Caribbean does not go downhill in writing after the first movie. That is your business to believe that opinion everyone else goes with.
Dead man’s chest gave the characters more depth! Elizabeth and William barely have anything to work with in the first movie. William’s relationship with his father that was hinted in the first movie of his father‘s existence. Paid off wonderfully. William’s character had way more in depth now and you have something to truly care about him for. You get both perspectives when you understand their Reunion! Bootstrap didn’t want Will to become a pirate like him, he wanted him to have a free life from the pirate life. William had a hard time accepting he was half Pirate but when he accepted his life and his father… He has a new journey to stab the heart of Davy Jones to set his father free.
And you’re implying William is better in the first movie just because he wanted to save the girl he loved? William in the second movie now has Elizabeth as a lover. And now a new journey to rescue his father someone else he cares about. And this became a difficult situation when bootstrap told Elizabeth at world‘s end. William has to make a decision. Either don’t kill Davy Jones so he can be with you. Or he does kill Davy Jones and set me free, but he won’t be able to be on land for 10 years. If I were him I wouldn’t pick me! :/ The emotional weight on William’s character gets better and better.
Elizabeth in the first movie was just a damsel in distress girl. She wasn’t useless in the first movie but you get the point. In the second movie, Elizabeth learned to wield a sword and she used it in the battle. She pulled a gun to Beckett‘s head.. went on her own journey to save will.
She has grown a lot since the first movie who was just an innocent girl! Elizabeth got better as a character in 2 and 3!
As for Jack sparrow. He does not become a joke at all in all 3 movies.
Jack sparrow is at his best in the second movie and in the third movie. There was a moment in dead men’s chest… Where Jack didn’t know what he truly wanted so the compass couldn’t locate what he desired. So when Elizabeth went on her journey and then found Jack.. Jack used her for his advantage! He took advantage of Elizabeth’s feelings by telling her if you want to save Will you have to want to find the chest of Davy Jones! In order to get will back.. That’s why Jack gave her the compass. Jack knew if he couldn’t figure what he wanted out he was going to get it out of Elizabeth. Since Elizabeth now wants to find the chest of Davy Jones to save will. This gives Jack the huge opportunity to find the chest to stab the heart in it. But instead he wants to control DavyJones before killing him. Jack sparrow is not stupid! When will was trying to stab the heart towards the end of the second movie. Jack knows just because Davy Jones is dead, does not mean the Kraken will be stopped as well. And you’re telling me Jack is dumb after part 1??
As for Beckett. He was a well executed villain who uses dialogue and negotiation to control people. The Reason why Beckett didn’t fire his cannons at worlds end. Was because it would be totally out of his character to use weapons. Beckett uses certain words to get through people and how to control them behind the scenes. Beckett at the end of the movie had nothing left to negotiate with. Davy Jones was dead, Jack sparrow is alive and well. Will Turner is now the new captain of the Flying Dutchman. Beckett had literally nothing to use against on people. He was caught in shocked and he decided to die..
Anyways I could defend the Gore Verbinski’s Trilogy all night. His trilogy is an underrated trilogy. It had great character writing and amazing detail of its depth.
Also Will vs Davy Jones!!! 😈😈😈
    when Will challenging Davy Jones.
Davy Jones asks him how do you know about the key?
Will replies and says, that's NOT part of the game is it? 😏 You can STILL walk away!! 😏
As for pirates 4/5 they are not even Canon they are filler movies. The story ended at worlds end! ☠️

You expressed my thoughts perfectly though I probably wouldn’t be able to phrase them as eloquently.
Elizabeth is easily one of my favorite characters of all time. Despite being the damsel in distress she is never helpless and takes advantage of any opportunity to improve her situation. Throughout the trilogy she regularly fools the people around her. Like how she poses as a maid of the manor assuming that they would try to ransom her otherwise. Or how she not only surmise the purpose of the raid on port royal but also called out their bluff when they stated otherwise. Her quick-wittedness isn’t as overt in the following two films but it’s still a big characteristic of hers that I love.

I thought I was the only one that felt this way about World's End. I wasn't the biggest fan of Dead Man's chest, loved the effects, loved the setups, but World's End captivated me from beginning to end. I was ROOTING for Elizabeth. She was legitimately bad-ass, and I would've loved to see some pirate spin-off films with her. I even cared about Will! The way the story came together, and the full on ridiculousness, absurdity, and even mild psychedelia floored me. Then I found out that most people I knew I didn't like it at all. Although straight up, I disagree with you on the Johnny Depp of it all comment. And the Keith Richards jibe. That scene was a brilliant surprise for me in theatres. Knowing that he had in part been a large inspiration to Depp for Captain Jack, and then actually SEEING the man himself show up as his father? I loved every minute of it.

As for the actors off-set. Pretty sure Rush was accused of something but I never heard of it again so I assume there was nothing there and Depp has a massive wave of support right now as it appears things are headed towards Amber Heard being exposed as a liar and an abuser which I hope to some degree allows Johnny the peace of mind to focus and get back in the right mindset for his craft and give us more great moments

I hope he isn’t referring to the Amber Heard allegations as what makes Depp problematic. Because they are quite literally false. Depp isn’t an angel or saint, but in that situation he seems to be the main victim and he got shit on by Hollywood for it. As for Rush, I saw another person say that he had a case go to court about sexual misconduct/defamation and he won (I acknowledge that this case was against a newspaper that was defaming him, and I can’t find info about the actual sexual misconduct beyond the allegations). So yeah hope he wasn’t referring to that stuff as to what makes both the actors problematic.

As a lot of others have pointed out in the comments, your vague attacks on Johnny Depp and rush and the 3rd guy really drags the quality of this video down. Throw in also the whole cultural problematic complaints which make no sense to me, as far as the cannibals there are actual tribes who are thought to engage in cannibalism so I don't see the problem with that, as for the bathhouse guys I never once thought that scene said anything about them as a race/ ethnicity just that those individual guys are a little crazy and did that as a fear factor cause I would of been terrified to see that.

The pirates trilogy has always been amazing to me growing up.
4 was a disappointment, but not the worst thing. Preferably removing the character that takes Jack's identity. The dynamic for me was uninteresting or cringe. The story would have been better if it was simply a race to get to the fountain of youth. Thay being said, it's not the pirates movie I would put on if I was to watch one on movie night but I would watch it again. There are things about the movie I really enjoy.
I saw the 5th movie outside of the US, I am not sure the quality of the movie. Like there were absolutely massive plot holes that I could ha e solved right after the movie, or they directly ignored what they layed put previously. Jack sparrow was in enjoyable and nothing else redeemed that. It seems like they ram put of budget halfway through and just ended it.
My point is the trilogy is the nest by far, but the 4th got more hate than it deserved. Myself included.

    • @jordyalmonte42
      @jordyalmonte42 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree 4 gets more shit than it deserves. In my opinion it’s not bad at all. Is it at the level of the trilogy? Heck no. Does it expand on the trilogy? Heck no. But maybe that’s the point of the 4th. To be a small footnote. Johnny Depp is still classic Sparrow, unlike the 5th movie. And I like that 4 doesn’t tamper with the trilogy, unlike 5, that retcons a lot of stuff in a cheaper way. I also like that we see jack once again set aside his selfish impulses to save a person he cares about (Angelica)

Your virtue signaling with what you consider to be culturally inappropriate scenes in the movie does not really make sense considering what the reality of the storytelling is trying to get across.
