    All trucks break down sometimes. I used to own a truck with the vortec 6.0 and want to share some things that I ran into while I owned that truck. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe!
    Comment if you have also owned a 6.0 and have more insight into these engines. Thanks!

    I have a 2001 Silverado 2500hd reg cab long bed with 460k miles, heavy towing work truck and now a daily fun truck. It's got the 6.0 with a 4l80e and the 12 bolt rear end. It is an absolute legend and I'll drive it as long as I possibly can.

    I've always been a ford guy. Always owned Ford's, and have beena hardcore fanboy since birth. I was forced to drive a chevy 2500 6.0 based on some tough economic times for me. I'll be damned if this truck didnt win my heart. From a biased ford man, chevy makes the better product.

    I owned my Silverado 2500 HD, Ext cab, short box, 4x4, with the 6.0 Vortec for 7 year's. I would still have it today if it didn't get totaled. I am a mechanic and found none of the thing's in this video to be common with the 6.0 Vortec's. As far as the water pump, ball joints, wheel bearing and lifter "NOISE", are common to all vehicle's. It is not just common to 6.0 Vortec. As far as the transfer case, GM made a big flaw in them, but its in ALL GM vehicles from 1999 and up with V8 4x4, not the 6.0 only. I can pick up GM transfer cases all day longer for $400. There are several companies that sell a new pump cover plate and tail shaft housing that solves that problem. Now days I find them for $100 and are quick and easy to install. The MPG's in stock form are not impressive, but it is a truck made to pull. When I bought mine it got 13 highway 10 city and 6-8 towing HEAVY. I quickly put some aftermarket goodies on it and changed that to 16-18 highway 14-15 city and 10-12 towing HEAVY, and found the stock diesels couldn't leave me on the hills. That was also with six inches of lift and 35 inch mud terrain tires, with stock 3.73 gearing. You will have problems with your 6.0 powerstroke for days, and spend a lot of money to make them bulletproof so they stay running.

      I'm currently working on my dad's old 2002 2500hd, and the engine certainly isn't showing signs of issue. Rusted out Rocker panels, cab corners, brake lines and bed frame rust on the other hand.... but that truck never got washed, and was always full of hay and shit.
      Brake lines were a pain with ABS box but everything else was easy enough. 2 gallons of chassis saver, some angle iron, and some cheap ebay slip on panels....a summer of getting supervised by my Dad, convincing him his truck isn't broke. Fun stuff, take them while I can.

    i run 2 6.0 vortecs. had good results. they knock naturally. dont get shit for fuel economy (thats not why we bought em). we bought em for power and towing. rebuilt one transfer case. i put these trucks though some deep plowing and tough towing. They still tough. no water pump going. knock or lifter noise is what it is. no fuel economy. its not a prius. tough work truck. lifter noise keeps happening on both trucks. still pluugging through. when first start when cold.. sounds like crankshaft bearings gonna shit the bed. then goes away after 20 seconds. they dont like cold. michigan cold. once warmed up run fine. always knocking. friends make fun of , say sounds like shitty diesel. im brand loyal. do have powerstrokes too!

    I had a 2001 GMC 2500HD with the Allison 5-speed (maybe it was the 4L80e 4-speed but I can't remember) and 6.0L LQ4 Vortec. Was both a great workhorse and mud toy, even with a bad number 7 coil pack. I've always been into Nissans and Toyotas, but when it came to stuff needing to be hauled and pulled/towed, a Chevy/GMC was always the truck that didn't whine like a beverly hills brat.

    Ball joints, wheel bearings, water pumps, ect. are all normal maintenance items on all vehicles. Although the transfer case issue may be unique to this particular model, it's also of note that Chevy, Ford and Dodge all use basically the same transfer cases from New Process.

    Hey great video. Thanks for the info. I have the same lifter noise you described in the video. What did you mean by adding solvent to the oil? What kind of solvent and how much should I use?

      I was getting 11 on the highway, about 9 in town, and 7 when towing. It was pretty bad with the gas. It had 4:10 gears so thats part of why it was so bad.

    I have 07 classic 2500 316 000 miles still going Ls motors are excellent motors you don't buy a 3/4 ton truck for fuel mileage if you own a 6.0 powerstroke that should be be your point of topic that is shit and if the LS motor so bad why have you owned multiple trucks

      I have a 1999 Chevy 6.0 4x4 , I have owned it since 2012 it had 105,000 miles on it now it has 196,000 its a very tuff motor . I have pulled heavy loads pulling a heavy built 24 ft. gooseneck trailer hauling 10 to 14 4x5 round rolls of hay that weighs 1,200 lbs a peace,. We will move at least 1,000 bales a year. Plus I haul my tractor and Bushhog weighting 9,500 lbs. my trailer weighs about 6-7,000 lbs. the only thing I had to replace is the alternator , heater core, batteries, plugs, and now the fuel pump in the gas tank. And I rebuilt the transmission 4 or 5 yrs ago . Still I think it's cheaper to maintain then the Duramax My cousin spent $9,600. To rebuild his 2005 Duramax Chevy 2500hd 4x4.

  • @yorksta86
    @yorksta86 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    "heavy duty". Can hardly tow a cat 299. These are light duty category. Medium duty is a 4500/5500 .

    • @AdmiralRustyShackleford
      @AdmiralRustyShackleford 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're heavy duty for most people, as most people don't need to tow 10k+ all the time. If you do, you're better off with a 1 ton dually diesel, heavier weight trucks tow better as they don't let the trailer weight upset them.
      I like my truck to be able to handle more than I need it to, that way I'm not stressing the parts. That said, I've rented a Ford F550 and that was way more than I need. I could get away with a 3/4 ton but I'd rather use a 1 ton because the parts are more heavy duty and will last longer.
