    The final fact about the car's licence plate is the scariest thing about WW1 I have ever heard.

    The driver on that day in june was Leopold Lojka.
    Named after him is the Lojka-effect. Which says that even historically insignificant people can have a major impact on history.
    Because it was Lojka that took a wrong turn in the streets of Sarajevo, and had to reverse to get back on track. All that right in front of Princip.
    So if he had done everything right, Franz Ferdinand would have probably never been killed that day.
    Simply said, the first World War, the Second World War, the Holocaust and in the end the cold war, have its origins in a car driving in the wrong direction.

      Here in the Netherlands, 11 November is "zottendag" (day of fools). It's the day when Prins Carnaval is chosen, and basically starts the whole Carnival season. While "zottendag" is actually unrelated to WWI, I've always found it pretty fitting, since the whole war was just one big example of futility

    The museum which houses the car is called "Heeresgeschichtliches Museum" it is absolutely worth to visit. They have the couch on which Dollfuß bled to death. On the first Sunday of every month the entrance is free ;). If someone plans to visit it do it in the summer, there is a special event each year "Auf Rädern und Ketten" where they show historic cars from the WWII and even a old KuK truck from the first world war.

    The Armistice took effect at the 11th Hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. My dad who was 5 all most 6 at that time, watched the troop trains bringing them home. He said there were church bells ringing for hours and people dancing in the streets to the thought that there would finely be peace in the world. Of course we know how that worked out.

    Couple of points, firstly as can be seen in the photographs and still on the car today in Arsenal Vienna. The shots fired went through the sides of the car, greatly reducing the power of the bullets, FF’s wound wasn’t considered fatal. However, he initially refused medical attention until he reached the palace. Once there doctors were unable to get to the wound due to FF being sewn into his clothes each morning by his tailor. Vanity caused his death, like most Hapsburgs. In addition the Austrians had already closed their embassy so as to avoid receiving confirmation from Serbia as to their demands thus probably accelerating the start of WW1 more than FF’s death.

    One rebel causes 16 million subsequent deaths. Kind of selfish isn't it.

    • @TheRadioativeBones
      @TheRadioativeBones 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just over Yugoslavia. Then add the deaths from ww2, which is 70-85 million (let's average that to 77.5 and add 16 to it) it's about 94 million people killed because of one man, and let's not forget that even recent conflicts might not have even happened because of it. One man... One.
