    Just want to clear the air. Everyone there was super nice to me and we all talked and were laughing together. Nobody treats me different because they think I’m a “Scooter kid” or think I haven’t been around long enough. I’ve been riding a BMX my whole life as well, even before the “Nitro Circus stuff”, people see that when I ride with them just like it’s a normal session at your local skatepark. Varga deserved 1st place and I’m proud of him, BMX ain’t going to level up if we are fighting eachother. I love BMX!

      Most of these guys have competed together for years. I think we all know ryan was in these events because his event (big air) wasnt an option. So he isnt a regular on the comp scene, and doesn't have the same close relationships most therr have. Many live close by and ride together, he just isnt a part of that. I dont think they were harsh on him. I just think they don't know him very well and know hed likely be doing big air if it were an option, and you cant build years worth of relationship in a week, so the vibe is just different. Most of those dudes are mad nice and super inclusive, ive experienced first hand. But you wouldnt make the same joke to an acquaintance as you would to your best friends would you? I think thats the dynamic we see. And in the aspect of his main event being big air, he is a square peg in this round hole, but there wasnt a square shaped big air hole, so he got in where they invited him. He was invited, so he belongs obviously, but if he had a choice, hed be doing a big air event and everyone knows it. I think ryan is great, talented, progeessive in a big way, but that doesn't mean these other guys know him very well. Toohey and buckworth do from nitro and being aussies, but the others dont have that experience. Id say we shouldnt assume the worst of situations we might not understand very well. Interpersonal dynamics are complex and rarely as simple as "theyre bullies."

    • @N-B-MMA
      @N-B-MMA 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      He honestly rode like he was out of place ..could you actually see him getting gold in any of the events?

    • @Honey_Daddy
      @Honey_Daddy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@N-B-MMA he was only invited into the best trick events, and if he had stomped the aussie roll, i do think he could have taken the gold. Thats a gnarly trick. But he didnt have the time hes used to with huge jumps, and i think the lack of airtime severely crippled his performance. That said, he does bring some of the biggest tricks done on bmx to date, and many are ones he did first. They're almost all on big air type jumps though, so while he has the bonafides to be in a best trick comp, i believe big air is really the only time his skills will shine, barring some unforseen luck. Tricks he can do on big air are not the same on a dirt jump or park sized box jump. He is so used to having a solid two or 3 seconds of airtime, so when it goes down to under or around 1 second and a third of the air, i understood why he didn't stomp his tricks at all. He is at home in big air and if he has the option, he would have shone, but i think X Games knows his bag of tricks is deep and he has a large draw, and wanted to include him where he might have fit in, absent his regular discipline. I think they did a decent thing by inviting him, and i think he deserved the chance. There was just a bunch of factors he had to overcome to take the gold, and it ended up being much more difficult than one may have guessed. I think he deserves the respect and had a place there, not only because he was invited, but because he has brought bmx forward in some aspects that some people wouldnt like to admit if they dont care for him. I disliked him for a long time because he was a scooter kid that was good at everything, but i gave him a chance to see what he is about and i had to respect it. He does things even other big air pros wouldnt do, and that's nothing small. We might disagree on his place there, or many of these things ive said, im not sure. But im just being as honest as i can about the situation and trying to be fair. He belongs in big air, and had no option for it. He tried his hand where he had an opportunity and it didn't work out. If it had, he could have taken both golds home he competed for. That was a strong possibility if he landed his tricks. But in dirt or park main events, he wouldnt medal, and he wasnt competing there because that was a known. If you disagree, i look forward to you making your points. I prefer to keep it civil, as im an adult, so i hope we can agree on that at least.

    1260 wins because it’s a nod to classic BMX. Going the highest, doing the most flips, the most spins, always takes the most balls. There’s a reason for so long the greatest trick was Mirras double flip and not some 360 tail whip bar combo thing.

    • @Honey_Daddy
      @Honey_Daddy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ive always loved the classic attacks to tricks, but there is a place for more progressive stuff like double decades and other sick stuff. There are only so many flips and spins physically possible, and while we may not have reached the flip/spin combo ceiling, i doubt anyone will do a 1440 anywhere off a big air ramp, or a size equivalent. Theres not much further to go in the spin only direction, so the sport will have to move past that being judged highest eventually. Getting super tech and still going huge is the future, and i believe it needs to be embraced if the comps want to keep relevant. The fans want to see stuff like what sandoval is throwing down. Myself included. But i fondly remember every sport racing to who could spin the most, flip the most, etc. Bmx, skateboarding, skiing, snowboarding, even gymnastics and figure skating and diving have had similar pursuits. But for bmx, that time has passed except for rare occasions, usually big air related ones.

    • @adamboyle3331
      @adamboyle3331 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Honey_Daddy true but the same mentality is happening with some of these more technical tricks. People are now racing to cram in the most barspins or whips, perfect example is Kieran Reilly doing a five bar spin truck driver.
      I do really like the Sandoval trick the most though. It’s highly technical yet unique and it looks good. First we had the era of tricks nonstop, then came the era of style where we abandoned trick difficulty and for many people took style way too far (cool turndown bro, do it again). Now we enter an age of high trick difficulty with style.

    • @Honey_Daddy
      @Honey_Daddy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@adamboyle3331 you arent wrong. Thats absolutely a fact. I am of the thought that the endless repetition type tricks all have an expiration date, and will be outdone with innovation or expansion on how these tricks are implemented in combo. For example, windshield wipers vs double whips. Theyre both two tailwhips, but one is far more difficult. One is simply a newer implementation of the same trick, but it adds a newer dimension that can be built upon. Now, whip, bar, spin/flip combos are very hard after a point and there will be decades of progress with them pushing the limits. Things like a late barspin after a big combo can make things insanely difficult too, so while one extra barspin, or an extra whip thrown in at the end doesnt read as super technical to the layman, it is still a technical addition that i believe differs from just spinning as many times as possible. There is only a certain amount of individuality that can be established within disciplines unless new tricks are established, but much like how the cash roll pushed many riders forward, especially when maddog threw them in comp, the variety of these combos is could never be as simple as spinning as many times as possible, and the skill necessary to weave some combos is next level. None of these are arguments against your point, more so just my opinions and views on how while the mindset is the same for some (5 tailwhips instead of 4, etc.. up to 360 double whip to late bar instead of 360 double whip), the level of technicality does actually rise immensely after a point and new tricks, as few as are seen in comps regularly, give exponentially more potential, and can push the sport forward in a more general sense. Doing a 1440 would push the sport in that one world record sense, but few would ever go for it. The combos that people use today (everyone does slightly differently but) many pros are able to develop the skills, expand in their own ways, and it keeps the sport fresher, in my opinion. Theres no right or wrong best trick. I just have more faith that the modern combos being used have a wider impact on the sport and open more windows to future progress. Again, you arent wrong, im not disputing it, im just making sense of why this is the direction that is most viable long term. And sandoval, ryan williams, some others are really pushing what is realistic in a progressive, sick way. Im 98% sure i remember mark webb doing a double decade 10ish years ago, but to add spins after the decade and then some...its awe inspiring. I guess what this boils down to, i love bmx. In all forms, its amazing. I think the future will always be more tech than just as many spins, whips, bars, flips, etc... One can do in a one bang, but those records have a place. I just dont see a septuple tailwhip being the future when some maniac might do a decade to truckdriver to late tailwhip in that same amount of airtime. Either way, i love this sport and enjoyed the thought your reply brought up.

Not to mention it looks like he landed 2nd/3rd try where Ryan tried how many times?... maybe if he stuck it in the first few attempts you get that wow factor at max and perhaps it’s a different story. It’s too bad there can only be one winner... cuz everyone has their own unique style or twist on the tricks they do and frankly all deserve to be admired/recognized individually. 🤷‍♂️

      The 12 was amazing. Hands down incredible trick. He fell all the way to flat. It was more like a 16 foot drop 1260. No disrespect at all.

    The M games has me remarkably suspicious. The only person I saw win anything without one of those on their head was Garrett and that would have been just too obvious given the competition. I think we have got some WWE shenanagins going on here.

    Why did they remove BMX Big Air this year and why did they not have purpose built parks for the X-Games this year? Is it because they think nobody will watch due to the Olympics and COVID issues?

      X Games is owned by Disney and they’re playing it pretty safe. I was required to wear a mask the entire time even after showing my vaccination card. Hopefully they can get back to normal next year. Heard it may be back in Los Angeles?

      @@OurBMX I hope. The commentators having to wear masks was ridiculous. I know Disney owns ESPN and thus the X-Games. They've really ruined X over the years.

      @@OurBMX X Games was what introduced me to BMX as a kid. In the 90's without the internet/social media, seeing X Games on the tv. Watching Hoffman and Miron, then seeing Dave Mirra, Nyquist, Lavin etc all killing it in the following years. 25 years later and I still love BMX, I just don't ride anymore unfortunately. I think it's a good way to highlight the sport to an audience who lay be otherwise unaware, however it has become more commercial over the years, but it is a business and that is too be expected.
