Matt, I have two male cats that took down a full grown wild rabbit. We have domesticated chickens and turkeys on our farm as well. The cats know not to mess with them, but I can all but guarantee a feral cat can and will eat the chickens. And cats, as you know being a veterinarian, are crafty and can get through some seemingly impenetrable barriers when there is food on the line. The fact that the feral cat was there by the coop indicates to me that he was not looking out for your chickens' best interests...😅

If the cat's head fits through, everything fits through. Their shoulderblades are loose and can shift around so they can squeeze through incredible small places.

I obviously don't remember it, but my folks tell me that I took my first steps (at 11months) because my Uncle's Border Collie, Dodgy, used to watch me for my Mom, and part of that watching was her crouching down next to me til I grabbed her collar and then stand up so I could haul on her to steady myself as I stood up, and then one day Dodgy decided that I was ready to walk so she led me a couple steps, and by the end of that day I was walking/toddling-around without her helping me to balance 😁👍

There is another aspect that may not have been mentioned regarding keeping the sheep on the ranch… Wildland fire fuel mitigation. That property, regardless of what happens with those sheep needs some form of continuous fuel mitigation. The other alternative is to grow your Boer Goat herd from your mansion and as you get your perimeter fencing and cross fencing infrastructure set up… phase out sheep and have an epic herd of Boer Goats that keep all the grass down and leaves up. This is only going to become more important as the resort grows and the number of potential ignition sources grows. It may be a good idea to consult with a couple of experienced Wild land fire professionals regarding strategic fuel breaks and thinning out the Cedar forest… a good ignition with a good wind behind it is not a pretty picture for your particular situation. Best unasked advice I can provide.

Matt, I have been to a few ranges that use pallets made into small rooms/huts that can be placed to make houses or close combat challenges. They are simple cost bugger all and with a nail gun and prybar can make anything you need. The course is modular so you can change entry points, layouts, choke points and blind spots any time needed.
May I also suggest Crown Vics as range cars, once again low cost and all the local law will love the home like feeling plus if you ask that crazy Florida man, he may even help with parts from his bone yard of Vics. I know you are thinking of $$$ in the build process, I was thinking of a team building exercise/working bee with all available law enforcement chipping in to create their own training tools. Having them strip pallets and build everything they need will give them a sense of ownership and pride in the creative process that I hope will only make your job as owner easier.

Feral cats and domestic cats free-ranging kill everything from tiny lizards and voles to bigger birds. They're killing machines. Not all individuals have the instincts to kill for the sport of it but the 20-30% that seem to enjoy the slaughter kill everything they see. Cats in the wild are basically an invasive species. I know it's not about this one cat, but these kinds of cats don't belong in the Texas forests and shrubs.

The structural mat will stay in place AND hold soil in place. The one I’m thinking about is the hexagonal structure that is about 2 or 3 inches thick and the hexagons are about the same. Hold soil well, slows down the water percolation and improves seed germination.

Matt, what kind of camera do you use? The reason why am asking is because your audio always sounds so good but I never see anyone ever wearing a mic.
As a new creator myself, just starting out, I struggle with quality audio - how do you keep your audio sounding so good?

I'm using my wife's tablet. One thing you could do before you put dirt down is back the targets away from the berm. That way you don't get rock chunks coming back at you.

I sure hope there is room for an Archery range somewhere on the Ranch. I don't mean just a few hey bails. I mean a full blown 16 target course with ATVs, golf carts, walking paths, and a main area with static and moving targets. It's one of my favorite memories from my childhood, going to the archery shoots on the weekend with my Mom and Dad. Mom was a Indiana archery champion for 2 years in a row, I remember the trophies just not what years. I had a few archery trophies myself, just local shoots.

You should keep the sheep on the ranch. They’re like an icon, plus they kinda have some history on that land and they chose to stay when others left. People would love to see them when they visit, at least a few maybe 5-10 just for sentimental reasons.

With DemoRanch and OffTheRanch it's easy to see that Matt really Likes DemoRanch and enjoys the content he gets to do on that channel, but there's a passion in the OffRanch videos that clearly tells a story that this is closer to his heart and what he wants to "be his legacy" for the future. DemoRanch is his Hobby, OffTheRanch is his Life.

Maybe plant some trees and bushes along the top of the berm? Roots eventually big enough to anchor all the dirt and rock of the berm?
To be most epic, you’d need a mountain for a berm. See the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, NM. 2nd place ain’t bad, though.

you should really look in to hydroseed, it lets you spray the mix down and it sticks so it will hold up if you get some rain and keep it from eroding before the roots take hold.

As already stated, some structural netting would help massively in stopping erosion on that berm. Ideally pour a few inches of soil, lay a net down, another few inches of soil, then seed or turf it. Grass roots should touch the net, but not the rocks underneath, and it'll last for ages.

Have you ever thought of defensive planting on the borders of your land?
There is alot of cool eco systems you can create that create a living fence that just gets more and more secure the longer it grows?
Some can even wild harvestable fruits, shoots and roots as an extra resource

What a massive project! You definitely do anything halfway. We all wish you the best of luck with it. Love the idea of local law enforcement having a great range to go to and train.
One thing though, define long range. How far can someone shoot there right now and what are your plans for long range when it's done?
