    Hey guys! I hope you enjoy this video :) It ended up being really long as it turns out I had a lot to say. I have also done an accompanying blogpost with some more information here: wildandwords.com/blogpost/what-i-wear-for-hillwalking. Next week I'll make a video about what I pack in my bag also. Thanks for watching!

      Athena : Hello! there. Good video, I understand trying to use walking poles would be difficult for you filming, though even one might help walking over rough, broken ground, whilst looking at the camera, instead of the track immediately in front of your feet.
      Looking forward to the next video.
      The state of those boots... 😂

    • @StevenKeery
      @StevenKeery 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Athena : Hello! again, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me, so I watched your video again.
      Your second back pack seemed to change colour from mustard, to yellow and then to orange, in the video excerpts.
      It must be your editing software. 😂
      Some people dislike bright, clothing colours in the landscape. I think they can be useful to attract attention if you have had a fall, (easier to see from a distance, or from the air), they also stand out in photographs.
      A little red will balance out a lot of green, so for figures in a landscape, it can make for a very nice photograph.
      Wonderful videos, keep them coming.
      ATB Steven.

      @@jittabug8321 like anything it depends , what counts is the specs and how reliable the brand giving out the specs is or if you actually need it in a particular situation. For example Fjallraven pants, I have them, they are great and hard wearing for cold weather but in warm climate its better to wear some cheaper columbia Silver ridge pants that are not as hard wearing but more breathable.(overall Columbia is a very mediocre brand IMO, but with their silver ridge pants they did good.)

    Hi Athena, I just wanted to say what an excellent guide this is. I've been walking in the hills (mainly in the Lake District) for a good while now and feel like my layering system is pretty well sorted by now, but it can be really challenging for people who are new to the outdoors to get their head around. You've made it accessible and simple here, and hopefully many people will learn a lot from your experience. I'm certainly going to try a couple of synthetic insulation jackets in place of my down stuff on the back of this. Thanks!

    Really great video again and I totally agree on buying one or two good quality over lots of cheaper options. I read your blog post a while back and bought the Fjallraven tracking trousers after doing much research (because yes... they are expensive) but have loved them so much AND the "open" pocket fits the large iPhone which was important to me. I am quite short so I do have to fold the bottoms over, but as you said... not a big deal. I love Patagonia but only have their undergarments so far LOL as I have a pretty good setup at this time for hiking. I am in the UK a lot walking/hiking with my BF and it definitely is a different environment than Arizona so I have my favorites for each part of the world :))) Looking forward to your next video!

    This video covers well how I feel about layering using merino and mid / insulation waterproof layers . I walk a lot in the Peak District and it provides lots of options for ascent , descent and the plateaus where weather changes quickly . I also like how the video shows how it’s good to open up to other types of gear that may fit your purpose like the longer snowboard jacket as a waterproof layer. Personally I like Howies merino long sleeve tops for layering. I also like merino long johns for layering . I will need new boots in the next year or so so will be looking into the Malhams . It’s always good to see other people’s perceptions of kit for hiking in the damp cold northern uk . The need differs from the west coast us and alpine vlogs.

    One thing I don't like though is all that mud on your Altbergs! Got the same boots myself last month and love them. I clean and oil them with leder gris after each walk. So happy I spent the money on them and it's making me get out more to make sure I get my wear out them.

    Another great video Athena, thank you!! I've been looking for a good rain jacket for a while now. I currently have a Mammut jacket (don't know the exact model). I've had this jacket for a number of years. It was not a cheap jacket and although it is quit good against the wind, I'm not satisfied about its rain protection qualities. It's a Goretex jacket and it did have a good rain protection in the beginning (when it was new) but it degraded quite fast. I have washed the jacket with Nikwax but it still isn't great in a good downpour. So since quite a while I've been looking at a replacement for that jacket but I'm afraid to be let down again about the rain protection qualities. I have looked at several Patagonia jackets (by other TH-camrs and their website). I don't mind the investment if it serves me well. I should mention that I use the jacket mainly for hiking (I'm a landscape photographer) but I might use the jacket for skiing as well. You mentioned snowboarding jacket in the video. How long do you have the Patagonia jacket and how do you maintain it (as in washing with rain protection in mind)? How good is the Patagonia jacket in rain over the years?

    Hi, fantastic and informative video! I couldn't agree more on your top two most important items: boots and an insulating layer are a must!
    Here's a tip that worked out for me, regarding gloves: I always pack a pair of latex gloves (like the ones used by doctors), and if it starts raining I put them on over my gloves. They are super light, small and completely waterproof (the only downside is that they're not breathable at all)!
    Cheers from Italy!😁

    I have the down version of your jacket from Patagonia. I just wear an ultralight rain jacket over it from a brand called Outdoor Research. I'm into very light gear, mostly for health reasons, so I really love how minimal that combination is. Also it's awesome that it compresses into its own bag. I always lose stuff sacks. Apart from Patagonia, I also like Haglöfs and Fjällräven. Their pants are indestructible and their packs as well. And they also recycle stuff and use wax for waterproofing, which I prefer over chemical waterproofing.

    My best advice to novice hikers is to don’t load up on gear (weight) and to start cold after a half hour/hour of hiking you still feel a chill add layers then don’t start with lots of layers then try to take off will be much harder to find the sweet spot then,

    Hi Athena, thanks for the video. I might try wearing 2 base layers of marino wool. Also, my wife and I have started carrying a small half sponge and at the end of every hike. We wash our boots in the last stream we pass. In the Peak District this is usually quite near the end point of the hike as there is plenty of water around. So the boots end up cleaner than would normally be the case and mostly good enough to leave to dry as is for the next time. I love my 4-season Altbergs all year round.

    Hi Athena, great video, I am sure we have all fallen foul of not having the right kit on at some time or other and suffered a little bit for it lol but a lesson learned makes for a fun walk. In my experience purchasing the best equipment you can afford will reward you with years of trouble free use and comfort. My boots, waterproof and mid layer, l got the best l could afford at the time and the rest l used cheaper brands to spread the cost till l could afford better. Like you, all the clothing and equipment l own are from well established manufacturers, that way l know that they will give me everything I need and more. Good to hear that you are doing a course, l did a course (Joint Services Mountain Expedition Leader) when I was in the Army and was able to take 10 men out to America and walk the John Muir Trail several times as well as other awesome places. (Yosemite Valley 4035ft to Mount Whitney 12802ft) l was then involved in organising and supervising an expedition to the Himalayas to trek up to Mera Peak (6476 meters) After we had summited Mera Peak we moved back down to Lukla (2860m) where we paid off most off our Sherpas and air lifted our heavy climbing gear down to Kathmandu. After a few days rest and the help of the few remaining Sherpas we trekked up to the Monastery at Thyangboche to help with the clean up after the terrible fire destroyed a lot of it and later we trekked up to Everest Base Camp to help remove discarded oxygen bottles left behind by previous expeditions. Definitely a great adventure that year lol I am sure you will get a lot from the course and in turn be safer and more comfortable on the mountains. Be safe and looking forward to seeing more adventures and videos from you 🙏🥾👍

    Down is warmer per weight, and more packable than any synthetic, and won’t lose loft after repeatedly stuffing it (time itself won’t effect the longevity of synthetic, just repeated compression). The latest synthetics like that plumafill easily make up for the slightly bigger stuff size and lower insulation value per gram by staying warm when wet and drying faster

      Naja: Cotton next to your skin will soak up sweat, but it doesn't wick it away from your skin. Instead you will have damp clothing rubbing against your skin as you walk, which can cause chafing.
      Not something you want to experience miles from home, as it can be painful trying to walk back.
      Also the damp clothing against your skin can quickly become cold, causing you to chill and sapping your energy.
      I think Athena also mentioned this in her video. She gives good advice based on experience. If you are new to hill, or long distance walking I would follow her advice.
      There is an old Irish saying, that I have just made up, that states that any fool can learn from their own mistakes, but a wise person learns from the mistakes of others. 😂

    • @RambleFamily
      @RambleFamily  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Naja H buying second hand is a great idea! I also do the same 😊 you should check out Outdoor Gear Exchange on Facebook. In terms of cotton, I think it’s ok for short distances and if you don’t sweat too much, but as the person below says it doesn’t wick away the sweat so will soak into the tshirt and can make you feel cold 😊 But as I say, for short distances it’s not that bad, and sometimes necessary if you’ve invested in lots of other new kit!

Ive been on a mission to find an affordable waterproof jacket, that goes over the bum and has a decent sized, adjustable hood! It is so hard :,( Every time I look at online pictures of jackets they zoom in on things like the sleeves, and hardly ever on the hood! The hood is more fundamental to a RAIN jacket than sleeves! (Sorry, I'm off on a rant now haha). Why cant they make hoods that stop rain getting on the face (many women wear makeup) and are large enough to accommodate a pony tail or bun (many women wear their hair like this). It seems so obvious, but so rare. Ps. I'm Irish, it rains all the time here, so I'm very invested in this lol! Ok rant over, thank you for attending my TED Talk ;P

    My tips for care of all of the items Athena mentions: never put it in the dryer (with heat). Hang dry or machine dry without heat. For socks: wear one (good) pair inside boots only and remove them immediately after hiking so as to not contaminate them on floors and allow them to dry as quickly as possible. Same goes for base layer if you are camping.

  • @Blue-pb7kz
    @Blue-pb7kz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Would love to know how you handle sizing when layering so much! I've been trying to layer my summer clothes for winter hiking, but I find the sleeves get so constricting with two baselayers, and then also my rain jacket compresses my puffy jacket quite a bit so I feel like it won't be as warm. I may also have an awkward body shape, which doesn't help! Do you size up for some things, and if so by how many sizes?

    • @RambleFamily
      @RambleFamily  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      V. S. Hmmm good question! I definitely don’t size up for the base layers or mid layer. If I’m in between sizes, I’d go for the larger size in the insulation as I know I’m more likely to be wearing this over lots of layers, and I may size up for the raincoat. The mountaineering raincoat I have in the video is really big and fits over loads of layers, which is a bonus! It’s tricky to get the balance between sizing right for layering but also having clothes that keep you warm and fit right. I’d opt for sizing up with a raincoat and insulation, but nothing else 😊

      @@NoxiousNoodles : I don't want to hijack Athena's thread but if she will permit me, you might be allergic to wool against your skin but merino is supposed to be better in those situations.
      The only other things I can suggest are a thin liner sock. I think they make them in silk, or ensuring you rinse the socks free of any detergent. Changing to a different, non-bio detergent and changing your socks daily and using talcum powder or foot cream to prevent blisters.
      Painful feet can turn an enjoyable walk into misery very quickly. Make sure you buy boots that fit you properly, from an outdoor store, rather than mail order.

To be honest, merino is fine and wool is normally fine against my skin (other wool socks have been fine). @@NoxiousNoodles : Seems strange, the only other possibility I can think of is if the socks are dyed and you are allergic to that particular dye.

      In my experience, with long hair, you have to decide where your ponytail will come out of the hat. It moves around as you move your head and causes the hat to slide up, or you feel like you can't move your head in case your hat slides up. It's not a huge problem, but it's a little annoying. So a headband would stop that. I do prefer a hat since I have short hair now though!
