YOUR advice on kit is especially valued BECAUSE YOU GO OUT ON SUCH LONG and challenging treks in all sorts of weather. Many TH-camrs 'test' their kit on overnighters and we learn little about functionality in the long haul.

Excellent presentation Becky. I find Under Armour long-sleeved polo neck compression base layers are really good. Keeps your body and neck warm. I use them for golf and hiking in the Autumn and Winter.

Worth pointing out the Altra Lone Peak 5 are zero drop shoes. Take some getting used to, I personally wouldn't just put a pair on and go and do a massive hike, and I'd argue most people would likely need to work up to it, as they do affect the way your foot mechanics work. Calves will definitely feel it for a while 👌

Having only taken up hiking recently a lot of my kit is crossover with running, because I already had it!
Asics Fujitrabuco trail runners are my shoes, Under Armour Crew socks have served me well on multiple runs and hikes and I also have a pair of Velochampion sunglasses with changeable lenses (dark, yellow and clear) which are lightweight and hard wearing.
Got a Christmas present which I really like as well, Wiggle sell DHB baselayers which are merino and mostly meant for cycling but they are a lot cheaper than most of the hiking brands. Only used it twice so far on day hikes, but it's very cold and windy in Scotland right now and I felt my core temp was a lot more consistent than with the running t-shirts that are usually my base layer, plus my arms were covered. Only small criticism is that there's no thumb holes as Becky mentioned. Lastly got a really cheap fleece buff to take my order over the threshold for free shipping when I was buying some freeze dried food, but mine has a drawstring on it so can also be worn as a hat.

I always come back to your channel, cuz your videos are so calming and good for the soul. You're such a nice person with a warmth of character to you that you instantly make me feel chilled out. There are a good number of quality British clothing manufacturers but Rab gear is my favourite, and you can often find their lines massively reduced if you look around. Recently bought a new Zenith waterproof reduced by £100.

Suggestion- on your Rab gaiters, cut a piece of climbers webbing to slide over the straps that run under your feet. This will protect the straps better and extend the life of your gaiters.

I agree with you about the Rab gaiters.
I bought some a couple of years ago. I wasn't sure at first as there are other well reviewed brands out there.
Must have used them at least 50-60 times now and they have performed great. The press studs, lace clips, velcro and boot straps have all held up very well and they still look great after a wash.
Great review Becks, keep up the good work :-)

The best raingear I've ever had and still use is a 2GoSystems poncho... Jackets, shells, and all the rest don't compare to a good poncho that can also be repurposed as a bivy, tarp, and ground cloth can't be beaten. It can also cover your pack and you as your hiking keeping it dry as well. Good luck with all the rest.

Waaaaa, I'm so chuffed. Thanks for sharing the Keen boots/midboot! I'm a size 2.5uk/euro 35 and struggle to find boots as they often start at a 4. I've seen they go down to a 2.5 and even their kids range is decent. I need the ankle support as broke my ankle fell running in the Black Mountains on Valentines Day 2018, so trainers are a no go on most of my hikes, unless I wear an ankle support underneath, which I try to avoid. Needless to say I can't wait to try on a pair of those boots/try out their brand. H X

Brilliant video. Thank you for sharing. I like the rab stuff you have. I have a rab down jacket but I've lost weight since I bought it so it's too big. Same with my trousers and rucksack. I'm gonna slowly start buying things in my size but it's expensive and can't do it all at once. My girlfriend has just bought me a woman's berghaus pack so hopefully this will fit better on future walks. When walking the West Highland way last September I was forever pulling my old one up onto my hips. I will definitely consider some of your recommendations when buying my new clothes and kit. Thank you.
Off to watch more of your Cape wrath trail 😊 I'm loving it

Some great tips and equipment mate. You're right about layering being important, but it's awesome how you kept your stuff small enough to fit in your pack, along with all the other gear. And keeping your head warm...ive stuck a bean on in the hammock, bit chilly to start with, but instant heat once that went on and even have to take if off once laying down to not cook like a turkey. As soon as you got the giggles, I knew you were going to say turn the pants inside out 😂

Hi Becks. Great video. I definitely prefer ankle support up in the hills but for a lot of bog & river crossings those lightweight ones are more suitable. Difficult to take both because of the weight. On some 3 day hikes with streams to cross I've worn my walking boots but packed some light flip flops. No good for the Cape Wrath trail though ! Take care mate xx

Clothing is difficult as comfort is costly...I find myself wearing rags at the fire pit so sparks will not destroy, create ember beds in my more expensive outdoor gear such as Arcteryx. Pay now cry later but one does become aware of sharp branches, bob-wire fences, drooling cattle, and other snags out to eat your expensive outdoor investments. Sometimes just LEVIS is so stress free! Cheers!
