  • Hello, welcome to our van life adventure! In this video, we'll be sharing with you our scary ferry crossing from Portsmouth to Saint Malo, as well as how my fears of the ocean were overcome and our European van life adventure began!
    You can help shape our trip by deciding where we go next here - poll.fm/11275847
    We are young family of 3 (Rich, Lisa and Rory). We have given up everything we have to live the #VanLife and travel around as much of the world as we can in our Ford Transit Custom conversion called Tango.
    We have named our trip #VanTurismo
    Having spent most of the year in our caravan in Cheshire a near death experience during labour completely changed our outlook on life. Since then, we have adopted a life is too short mentality and intend to make the most of every day. Starting in Devon in early January we plan to travel around Spain and Portugal until the end of March. During which we will be hopping on a ferry to Africa and have a few weeks in Morocco. Then into April and the world is our Oyster!!
    We will have to head east as we do the dreaded Schengen Shuffle! We plan to release 3 videos a week taking you through the highs and the lows, showing you best bits of the continent and beyond from the comfort of your arm chair. All with a 4 month old baby for good measure!

    Transderm Scōp really works {one of the most effective meds for motion sickness out there. {Prescription only}
    The worst rough ferry crossing I had was as a child on the 'Falaise' {really small} from Dieppe Newhaven.
    I had a headachey feeling and they closed the decks because it was too rough.
    I asked Dad how many more hours, and he looked at his watch and said ''we have been at sea for one and a half hours, so a few more to go...I remember the ''urghh'' feeling and just wanting to get off.
    The carpets were stained badly from people's past pukings - it was horrid. plus people were allowed to smoke inside then...so all in all a nightmare crossing. My poor mum felt dreadful, and baby brother was sick. Dad was fine. He said ''This isn't rough! Calm as a millpond''

    Try crossing from Dover to Ostend in a force 8 gusting 9 as I did on board the Belgian ferry Prins Baudouin in the 1960"s.

      Those ferries were tiny as well...modern ferries are huge in comparison. We did a school trip in 1970's on a tiny ferry Dover to Ostende - can't remember the names of the ferries, but we explored the ferry and they had a horrendous large cabin with bunks in it and small aluminium saucepans everywhere to be sick into!

      @@Oakleaf700 I travelled on all the passenger ferries on the Ostend-Dover route from the mid 1950's until the 1980's. In the earlier years there were 2 vessels built in the late 1930's and indeed small compared to those on the Dover-Calais route nowadays. I've seen old footage on TH-cam of a number of those ships bringing back fond memories.
