- In this spearfishing episode I will go over my favorite 110 single roller gun setups, as well as going over what I think we should be prioritizing when it comes to all roller gun setups.
What is the most important thing when it comes to spearguns?
Is it? Power & Range, Accuracy or Handling?
My hope for this tutorial, is not only
that you get setup up your 110 roller really well.
But that you will have a better understanding of the elements
that make a roller gun work.

Hey Chris, thanks for all the great tips and advice! Just changed m 110 conventional to a 110 roller with the same set up as the "Load Assist 110 Roller".
Just wondering if instead of having a 150cm 7.5mm shaft, what if it was a 140cm shaft. Would it still be pretty accurate? I noticed some Pathos Roller guns have a shorter shaft as well (Where I got my idea)

Thank you for these videos! Question - I just got a roller head to convert my gun. It has a hole for an additional 'kicker' band. In what circumstances does it make sense to use this kicker band? To assist when using the roller or separately, instead of the roller bands? Do you ever use a kicker band?
The only time you need a kicker band is on an inverted roller. If you set up you roller right you wont need a kicker. They just cause unnecessary recoil.

What do you think about using aluminium barrel 110 with shorter shaft 140cm and 7.5 width ? Prefer use 14mm band or maybe 14.5mm small id (it's between 14 and 16mm). What do you think about this setup?
That will reduce the weight to almost the same as the 7mm, but most guys are used to the same length overhang on the gun. But the increased thickness has increased drag so you will need to ramp up to 16mm bands anyway.
Just use std 16mm, you are doing the exact same thing a different way. No proven benefit to small ID bands.

Question: having a thicker rubber in a thin shaft (16mm for a 6mm shaft) will decrease the accuracy? What are the cons on that set up? My gun is a 110 with a 120 shaft

When the shaft gets too thin and long it will whip or wobble. This causes inaccuracy and loss in power. Generally the thicker and shorter your shaft the more power you can put into the shaft, and the longer and thinner the shaft the weaker the bands need to be.
That was really cool Chris, really appreciate your experience and advice cheers for sharing. For Blue water FADs etc, big thick fish, what are you using? I know a few lads are opting for the double roller, 8mm sharkfin shaft but with virtually no over hang? What's your thoughts? I noticed also you are using the off set double floppers in this video, these are my favorites, for all sorts of fun. what lengths do you recommend for over hang with these if running 16mm rubbers? Cheers for sharing and Dive Safe!
For diving off FADs ect with big fish I would be comfortable with a 120 or 130 single roller with 7.5mm shaft. I will cover these in the next video.
As for over hangs always go as short as possible / comfortable. The longer the shaft the more flexible it is, limiting the amount of power you can put into it. Same reason for staying away from soft stainless shafts.
Going shorter also means you can go thicker and keep the same weight of shaft.
The only issue with very short overhung shafts is that some guys battle to aim with it as they aim off the end of the speartip. But is the shaft length and thickness/weight are good then the gun should be good.
As a reference have a look at what Italo Alemanni is doing. He has pretty much lead the way with rollers. Most of his guns come std with the spear thread a few mm past the muzzle.

Hey Chris, these are great videos. I was wondering if you could share how you rig your reel on your roller gun? The reef where I hunt is relatively shallow (8m or so) and I normally do not use a reel as I like uncomplicating.

Buoy lines are easier, for sure. But reels give you untethered freedom.
On the RA the reel mount is built in and works perfectly with rollers. Its all designed to work together.

Generally on rollers you land up going with double wraps.

Hi Chris, Great videos and appreciate your insight. Do you have any experience with larger rollers? I'm targeting Bluefin Tuna in Southern California and I'm considering converting my RA 1300 to a roller. I've read some mixed reviews stating the advantage of the roller diminishes a good bit once you get to that size, so I am wondering if this would be worth.
120 & 130 rollers are great. Just have a look at some of the old Ascension videos. Shafts going clean through 100kg fish.

but the new bands cut to 60 cm are too hard to load, do i leave it with pretension for days so it can stretch out a bit? or what do you suggest
No dont leave them stretched out. You will damage the rubber.
With a 16mm band you will need to load the gun with a 14mm load assist.

I have a 7mm shaft and 16mm rob allen bands, is this a good setup at 60cm bands or is there something I can do better ?
PS. i probably cant get a 7.5mm shaft.
also if i shorten then overhang to about 25cm would that do any harm ?

Hey Jamie, How old is that reel? The newer ones have much better drag washers. Maybe a washer upgrade will do the trick.
Hi Chris, super impressed by your knowledge, but maybe even more so by your willingness to help out your fellow spearo by answering what appears to be all the comments! kudos. I have a RA 120 with double 16mm that kicks like a mule, I’m keen to convert it to a roller & was thinking of trimming the barrel down to a 105, putting a 140 long 7mm shaft on it and 14mm rubbers. I hunt a bit on the reef but mostly target kingfish here in New Zealand. Do you think this is an ok option? I like the idea of a little less shaft overhang, or would you suggest trimming it to a 110 with a 150 - 7mm shaft? I’m definitely keen on keeping the rubbers at 14mm (in combination with a 7mm shaft) after watching this video to not need a load assist.

No problem answering all the questions. I learn a lot from them and get a better understanding of what guys are thinking.
On cutting down the 120 for NZ.
Unless the overhang is super important to you, just go 110.
Remember you want to keep all your guns the same so them all of them need to 5cm short. Better to keep them std.
Start with the 60cm 14mm bands with the 1.5m 7mm shaft. This is a great all round gun and a great starting point.
If you find yourself chasing bigger Kings over the 20kg mark then you can always go up to a 1.5m 7.5mm shaft and a 60cm 16mm band with a load assist.
Thanks for the great video. I have a Pathos sniper roller 95 that came with 2 16mm bands (1roller 1 kicker). The guy at the dive shop Talk me into buying 14mm bands. Still too cold to get into the pool and try them. I will also take your advice and try just one roller band. Thanks again for the great video

I understand the trade-offs between the 7mm / 14mm setup and the 7.5mm / 16mm setup - for ~100lb Grouper is the 7mm/14mm setup enough, or step up to the 7.5?
Tommy 100lb grouper have tough skulls. Go 7.5mm &16mm bands for sure. Whack em hard!!

Hi, great video. I'm looking to set up my first roller (110 with 7mm shaft) but i didn't allow for the mvd trigger to be set so far back on the handle, was going to put a 2nd flopper on but would need a 160 shaft to do this. Has anyone had trouble with accuracy on a 110, 14mm bands with a 160 shaft? Thanks very much guys
As long as your overhang is between 20cm - 30cm there should be no issues.

Hey Chris, I just noticed all your roller vids have the Vector 2 handle without a loading butt, but most Rob Allen’s have one. Most people who would be changing from a conventional set up to a roller will have the loading butt. Do you recommend taking it out?
I am not a fan of the loading butt. It only makes loading more difficult. I think it’s an American thing to have one and load on your waist. NO GOOD
The std RA handle fits perfectly into your chest. So much so I can load & do load all my various guns with no loading pad.
Loose the loading butt it is completely unnecessary.
Mr Coatesman thank you so much for these videos! What is your feeling about kicker bands on a 110 single roller gun 14mm progressive bands on the kicker and roller bands? Do you think there is any advantage/disadvantage? Thank you so much for your contributions to the sport!
My personally don't like kickers, They only add recoil. A properly setup roller should not need a kicker band. Only time you need a kicker band is on inverted rollers to get the shaft moving. Completely unnecessary on good rollers.

I know you might not reply to this as this is an older video, but I currently am looking to convert my 110 Rob Allen Cobia (alloy barrel) to a roller gun for less recoil. I currently have 2x 14mm bands and a 6mm shaft. I’ve been using a 90 my whole life but need more power for the fish I’m going for now, which is a combination of reef and bigger pelagics. I would also like some more manoeuvre ability with the gun for tracking closer reef fish, as I’ve had a few issues with this being slow. Because of this I was thinking of cutting the gun down to a 100 or even a 90. What would be your recommendation for a combination of enough power for mid sized pelagics and manoeuvre ability for reef fish?

Being an Ali gun I would keep it 110. If you cut it down you will loose buoyancy to the point the gun might not float with the shaft out. Then the gun in non functional.
Make Up the 110 with 14mm bands and a 7mm shaft. To go shorter you will need to have a carbon barrel.
By any chance you’re gonna do a comparison pros and cons between single roller vs double rollers vs inverted rollers? 😅

Also intrested in a compound roller Like the she Wolf Predator. It uses a 14 mm rubber on top with a string in it To limit the stretch Attach to to 16 mm bands on the bottom Which do all the work in the beginning.
Hi there! I just converted my Rob allen tuna 130 (alu) to a 110 roller with your 7mm setup. I've watched many videos and some spearos add foam inside their tube to improve flotability and to prevent water to come inside. What do you reckon with the rob allen muzzle ?

Adding foam will only add to the weight and not make any difference to the buoyancy. Your best bet is just to plug the barrel, leaving just enough space for the muzzle. 40mm should be good. on the muzzle side.
I've upgraded my Beuchat Marlin to a carbon roller after watching your videos. If you get time, could you do a rubber review on standard vs. small id holes in the rubber.

Small ID rubbers don't give the advantage that people think. If you work out the area of the rubber OD minus ID you will notice the difference between 1mm and 2mm ID is small by comparison to adding or subtracting 1mm to the OD.
For me the extra hassle / difficulty of inserting wishbones on small ID rubbers is just not worth it.
At the end of the day it's what you can load into the gun, regardless of ID. So for consistency and availability sake I just use std ID rubber.

I have a gun 110 roller setup the way you mentioned for 14mm (but shaft is 6.5 that came with the factory), the effective range seems to be at 4m -4.5 with a single wrap.
Should i change to double wrap and or 16mm to increase the range? Or is the 4m a normal shooting range.
I would use double wrap. and keep the 14mm bands at 60cm 👍

I am not familiar with the beuchat hero.
Wanting to shoot fish 6m away is extreme for a 110. A double wrap on a 110 is 5.5m so if you add the shaft it is possible to reach 6m, but not ideal for a 110.

Hey man I’ve got a 100cm. For that would you lean more toward 90cm or 110cm setup? Right now it’s stock. I think it’s 16mm bands at 300% stretch and 7mm shaft. Was stoked to use the gun after using a 100 double band but roller felt slow compared. Any help much appreciated 🤙
Stay with the 100cm. I would start with the half barrel + 5 cm rule using 14mm bands / full pretension. (55cm rubber) keep the 7mm shaft.

Do you think I would need to power up to 16mm bands if I ran the RA drop barb shaft which is 7.5mm.
I’d rather not have to have separate bands but it would be cheaper than 2 guns I suppose!

You can but you have to run the bands at 400% or more. This means you will need a load assist and your rubber wont last. If you are having to use a load assist then you might as well move to 16mm at 360-370%

The extra drag the 7.5mm has over the 7mm means that even with the two shafts been of almost the same weight 470g.
The 7.5mm will be slow with the 14mm bands. You could cut the 14mm bands to 55cm and use a load assist. They wont last long so going to 16mm at 60cm with a load assist will be better.
For me the 1.5m 7mm shaft with hand loadable 14mm rubbers, is the right combination for that gun. Mostly because you can hand load it. But it also feels nice to shoot. Low recoil and smooth. Just an all round good gun. Definitely would try this setup.

Hey Chris, do you ship guns to the US? If so, does your 110 roller float with the shaft out and a reel? Do you add a ballast weight to the front to help with recoil? Looking at a rob allen tuna but would love to support you if possible. Thanks!

Aloha, would you please tell me what brand and diameter hollow core dyneena are you using for your shooting line?
I have been using std 1.8mm & 2mm dyneema for shooting line. I have battled to find hollow core dyneema that is good. Its either too tight and hard to splice or too soft. Another problem is the hollow core dyneema if not woven right flattens out, which causes drag slowing the shaft down. Plus the 100kg breaking strain of std dyneema is more than I will ever need for 95% of the spearing I do.

I use a 14mm small i.d mako rubber for a 100cm roller but my anchor on the roller below is only 90 cm how long should the rubbers be?
measure the length from your anchor point up and around the roller back to the notch you load on.
Divide that length but 3.8 for 380% / 3.7. for 370% and so on.

I am building a 110cm roller mostly for targeting yellowtail/king fish in Mexico and maybe some grouper, but I couldn't decide on a band/shaft set up that I liked. After watching this I think the 7mm shaft with 14mm bands will do best, do you agree?
Hey Gunnar, What size Kingfish are you looking at? And will that be in summer or winter?
Because the Kingfish are open water and are notorious for bending shafts the 7.5mm setup might be the one if you have a carbon barrel.
@@CoatesmansSpearfishing Yes I am using a carbon barrel. I will be in Mexico in July. I haven't done this trip before but I know we don't get Kingfish as big as they do in NZ, if I get very lucky maybe around 23kg.
If you are hunting out in open water, the 16mm / 7.5mm shaft setup will give you the confidence to hit anything, and you might bend fewer shafts on the big grouper.
The 14mm / 7mm shaft setup excels with fish around the 10kg mark.
If you are able to take both setups you can flip between them in a few minutes. Two completely different guns in one 👍

Would a 1000 roller be fine to use as a bluewater/reef gun? My water tends to be murky at times, so curious how much of a difference is a 1000 roller to a 1100.
Raul, I would never really consider a 1000 as a blue water gun. Not even the 110. I know some guys use their 110 in bluewater, but the moment you have a long shot or a big fish you land up wishing you had a longer gun. My advice is to have two guns one for the murk and one for the blue. Don't compromise, do both properly.
Chris, I measured the spring rate of a new 16mm band (folded round to make x2) which measured 1.25 inch stretch from a 10lb static weight. This gives a spring rate (aka stretch rate) of about 8lb/inch. That doesn't seem to correlate with how much you stretch the RA110 to go from 55lb at the muzzle to 110lb at the notch. It would only need less than 7 inches (175mm). Does this mean the band spring (stretch) rate is non-linear i.e. not like a spring?

Rubbers load is not linear. There is a slight increase after 300% gradually increasing to around 400% where after the load increases a lot. This will vary from rubber to rubber with the harder modulus rubbers increase in load starting earlier around 200-250% and converse for softer lower modulus rubbers being more 'linear' past 300%.
Well that's my interpretation of things.
@@CoatesmansSpearfishing Thanks Chris, that explains everything. So this means it has to be experimentally set up and calibrated because of the variations in the rubber band performance, including the additional variables of temperature and maybe aging or exposure to UV light. That might suggest a pre-load check at the roller head and notch load to see how this has changed, probably once a year. FYI - Kg are for measurement of mass, Newtons are measures of force (technically) as in F = ma. In North America (I was not born there) they use lb for everything, weight and force because they're Americans (they can't help it.)

The 14mm bands at 60cm will drive the 7mm shaft really well. There is just no need to use a 16mm band ... unless it is very soft modulus rubber.

Okay I 've already bought the 14mm and my gun is now converted... I was just trying to find a use for my ex 130 bands... They will propably be a spare for my 120 roller.

@@spearfishingspirit2131 if you find a 1.5m or 1.4m 7.5mm shaft the 16mm will work well on the 110. The gun will be a bit heavy in the water. but it will shoot really well. Use a load assist 👍
This is my set up both ways..but i recently buy some 18mm rubbers...they are at 60cm are they to short? I haven't been able to test them as yet.
Definitely not a recommended, for everyday spearfishing. But you have them so give them a burn. 18mm at 60cm will give you approx 32kg on the muzzle so you will need a 40-45cm 14mm load assist.
The load on the notch almost 70kg!! And this gun puts out as much power as a 130 with 16mms. So it's a canon. definitely 7.5mm shaft. Would be great to be able to use an 8mm tho.

I have a shaft length and thickness question. If I was to use an 8mm shaft that was about 7” shorter at the overhang then the weight of the 7.5mm and the shorter 8mm would be almost exactly the same. What would be the negative if using the thicker, stiffer and shorter overhang with the 8mm shaft?
The thinner shaft has less drag. The thicker shorter shaft will be stiffer.
But with rollers you should not be using long overhangs on your shafts any way.
8mm shafts require a fair amount of buoyancy and ballast to manage the inertia.
On a single roller just stick with the 7.5mm

Yes double wrap, but this does make reef hunting a bit tricky at times. You need to be conscious to quickly take up the extra slack on the shooting line so the fish does not reef up.
@@CoatesmansSpearfishing I have found with a reel and no mono, you can easily go from single to double wrap depending on the situation.

Hey Walker, It's an std old RA carbon barrel with camo sticker on. No model just parts I put together.
How does aluminum vs carbon affect this setup? there's a $237 difference in the RA aluminum vs carbon. Is it really worth it?
The Ali barrel is heavier in the water so you loose buoyancy. The carbon barrel is already borderline regarding buoyancy and reducing that is just going to make the gun heavy in the water.
That said it will not affect the guns performance, as it has no effect on the mechanics of the gun. Only how it handles in the water.
@chris please help. Would you rather have a 1100 or 1200 with your recommended set ups for each in Hawaii? Shooting mostly reef fish under 5kg? But see the occasional 10kg+ (uku) jobfish and Ulua (giant trevally).Very clear water 90m viz. I use a conventional 120 double band. Would you say 1100 roller is equivalent in power and range with 7mm and 14mm bands? I value speed of Loading and minimal gear.
Hey Karl, I would tend to lean towards the 120cm just because of the hitting power at range over the 110.
Between the Uku, Ulua and even Wahoo that you get there the 120 with 7.5mm shaft is going to be better.
The only issue is you will need a load assist or go double roller so you can hand load.

This will vary depending on the pretension %
I'm referring to on your actual gun, front of the roller to the notch on the shaft, I was actually trying to calculate your stretch percent based on the length of your setup.
I bought my first roller, it’s a 110 carbon. I have it all tangled and I’m lost as to how to set angle. Can you please tell me how I would go about detangling and then start loading it all over again? I don’t see any videos on this from anyone. He would be the first to do it if you did. The community would much appreciate it because there are many people who have no one to guide them and are starting out new with a roller guns. Thank you in advance.

How does a 110 have more buoyancy than a 90 running same diameter shaft? If shaft overhang is the same then isn't everything proportional?
Fish Hunter, The volume / buoyancy of the barrel exceeds the weight of the shaft. The 26.5mm barrel over a 10cm section has 55 cm3 so has approx 55g of lift (less barrel weight)
The shaft if 7mm and 10cm is approx 30g.
55g lift - 30g shaft = 25g positive buoyancy
So if you are comparing a 110 to a 900 both using 7mm shafts the 110 will have 20cm of additional barrel and shaft over the 900.
Thats an additional 50g of positive buoyancy.
@@CoatesmansSpearfishing I'm still not with you 100%. To me it's simple ratio n proportion- you have an extra 50g of buoyancy on the 110 but the extra 60g of shaft weight negates it. I might be missing something? The 110 barrel is the same % longer than the 90 and the 150 cm shaft is same % longer than 130cm shaft.
I have already taken the shafts weight into consideration.
In total the 110 has 20cm more barrel buoyancy (2 x 55g) = 110g
The shaft over 20cm is (30g x 2) = 60g
110g lift - 60g weight = 50g
So the 110 is 50g lighter in the water with the shaft in over the 900
@@CoatesmansSpearfishing You are 100% correct mate, I stand corrected! I crunched the numbers you gave me and got the same answer! 50g more buoyant force on the 110. It goes against my logic though and I haven't got it clear in my head why this is the case.
@@CoatesmansSpearfishing OK so now I know what's happening here: as the barrel length increases with same amount of shaft overhang, the shaft is getting proportionally smaller compared to barrel length, therefore barrel provides more buoyant force! Thanks for helping me get to the bottom of this phenomenon!
How about 8mm shaft and 16mm rubbers
8mm shaft will be too heavy for a single roller with 16mm band to drive. Plus will make the gun heavy in the water.
Late to the party. I have a 110 Carbon roller. I mostly use 7mm x 14mm. Can't complain. Never failed me yet! However, if i'm going after bigger game in open water, i slap the 7.5mm x 16mm on. 14 can work but you gotta get closer to the fish. 16 gives you less work and more freedom below, but they take it out of you to load. By comparison.
If I only had a 110 thats exactly what I would do. 7mm/14mm bands for general diving. 7.5mm/16mm for bigger game. Shoots seriously good... just a little heavy in the water.
@@CoatesmansSpearfishing Oh don't get me wrong. I still have a 120 snapper that I refuse to convert for sentimental reasons. My first gun and Lucille (That's her name) will stay as is! Unless I wanna use her in open water as well. Then she gets a 7.5mm x 16mm setup. And then I call her Beulah!

I've not used it in so long because my 110 carbon roller is just that good! Bit of a waste, so converting my 120 snapper to a 120 carbon roller 16 x 7.5 just so it's not a waste. And that'll be my blue water gun...
