Agreed. He made the choice not to show he was hurt and upset, so pretending they were casually acquainted a long time ago made this interaction less heavy.
Rewatching this scene after watching the entire episode hits so differently. It's pretty impressive how coolly Kevin sells the whole "stranger" act after knowing the pain he put himself through to look for her. You can see this quiet vulnerability in the way he talks to her here. Once you know for sure that this isn't some dream sequence or alternate reality/afterlife, the signs that Kevin is just faking it are pretty clear
The desperation in Kevin's eyes as he tries to restart from scratch with her, discarding their former relationship he asks her to come to the dance for the acceptance he has been seeking for decades...... Justine Theroux is a force of nature. Both him and Carrie Coon gave the performance of their lifetime in the leftovers.
I love the way he delivers "I could never forgive myself", then later in the episode he brings up the regret and hurt he has been carrying from the hotel room scene. It is almost like he let that feeling slip, for just a second, while trying to play it off as if it was them truly reuniting under different circumstances.
Let me tell you this moment BROKE me when I first watched it because I felt so devastated that he wouldn't remember her. A friend of mine had recommended the show to me and I couldn't for the life of me understand what it was about, where it was going or why I was watching it except because I trusted my friend's judgment that it was a great show. And in this final episode, starting in that moment, I understood : it's not about what happens, it's about the people, what they go through and the relationships they build even through trauma. After 3 seasons of watching them struggle but mostly loving each other, being the one person the other needed, the thought of seeing them seperate, the thought that their history could be forgotten absolutely devastated me. I cried 5 times watching the finale. And after it was over I understood why my friend recommended the show : it's the best show ever made about human beings, about love and grief.

It reminds me of a scene from Buffy The Vampire Slayer, in which (SPOILERS), Spike sees Buffy for the first time after she died and was resurrected. He actually sees her, realizes that he is seeing the woman he loves after so long believing he never would again just like Kevin, and gives this same look. Fuck, both are just so good.
Great performances by both. Kevin opting not to show his hurt and pain was a good move. Pretending to be just acquaintances with Nora showed her that he was not damaged by her disappearance. You can see it in his eyes that he is still effected by the loss, but chose to take the higher road. Great writing on this show.
This is the first time he mentions they first met in the hallway ... As far as i know he most of the time doesn't remember they met on the hall way ... He always said they met when they were getting divorce
