    I have had the the BTB675 since 2017, which is very similar to the BTB745, basically the predeccessor. My review after ca. 6 years of ownership:
    Pros:
    -the neck is perfect, unhindered access to the 24th fret, altough this version has a cut-out at the end of the neck , so there is only a 24th fret on the D and G string. My go-to bass for upper-register chordal/melodic playing
    -the look: all the proportions are perfect to me, for example the curve of the headstock is mirrored at the end of the neck and the shape of the upper horn looks way better to me than the later models
    -neck stability: only had to adjust it once so far, only to find out it has TWO truss rods (probably because it was also offered a as 6 and 7 string)
    -the longer 35" scale length is great for the B string and lower tunings
    -like with most Ibanez basses, you are getting a lot for the money, in this case a pretty decent boutique bass for ca. a third of the cost (I think it was like 700€ new)
    Cons:
    -like you mentioned the pickups are quite muffled (compared to my MIJ Fender Jaguar or Sandberg California TT4), neitherthe Pre-amp or the shiftable mid-frequencies are really helping
    -its definitly on the heavier side, weight wise
    -the sharp edge on the upper body really hurts when playing with a pick, which is weird considering it is very ergonomic otherwise
    -the Neutrik Cable Output Jack is meant to prevent accidentally ripping your cable out, but thats rarely the case and is usually more of a hinderance, since you need both hands to unplug it
    -the truss-rod cover onthis version is on the headstock, so you have unwind the strings to adjust the truss rod (which they changed on the 745)
    Overall: I bought back then mainly because of the look, I never really used the low B that much, I moved to more vintage-flavoured instruments, but I kept it because of the great playability and for sentimental reasons.
    Also, unrelated observation: pretty much all the people Ive seen play the BTB series are either Jazz/Gospel players or Extreme Metal players (or a mixture of both), probably because of the enhanced ergonomics ans upper fret access

    Some of us absolutely love Bart's. My advice to your viewers is to play a bass with them thru a really good amp and develop your own opinion. To me their sound is clean, clear and deep.... Very Hi fi, but not for everyone. Most PU's create more mid to high bass harmonics, a thicker sound. Bart's shine when used with no distortion.

      I too love barts. These pickups ain't barts sadly, they're import Cort pickups that are 'bart designed'. I've done some mod projects with USA barts and I've always loved the tone, same goes for my MTD with the custom barts. The MK1 and BH2 pickups are just mass manufactured soapbars that allow an 'up-sell' due to the premium brand connection

    As someone who loves BTBs, that weird, sharp edge can be bothersome. You really got to play to the shape of the instrument, which is a bit of a learning curve, but once I got accustomed to it I found them to be immensely rewarding to play. One thing that I found out that helped me was that if you're sitting down, try putting the body right between your legs so you're playing it almost like an upright bass.

    • @Mezziah777
      @Mezziah777 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've tried that, and it works very well if I'm playing a lot of leads and melodies.
      For general basslines though I would get a lot of fatigue in my left arm, with it being held up high, even worse with the BTB and it's extended scale, putting the "money notes" even further away.

    • @rickrolli7091

      This is good info, since I'm looking at a BTB as my next potential bass purchase. Started playing guitar with a Flying V, so crotch position is my default anyhow. 😂 I hate playing with the instrument off to the side on my leg.
      That said, I am leaning toward the EHB range for weight concerns. Love the BTB series looks though.

    I've got an older BTB 6 string which came with Bartolini MK II pickups and peamp. I thought it sounded muddy in the lows and overly strident in the highs. I replaced with Nordstrand Big Rails and preamp and it helped hugely.

    I agree on the design flaw of the edgy edge of the body. My ESP used to cause such trouble too but instead of sanding it down and ruin its resale value I just created a hump out of black epoxy putty which was then attached with two-sided sticky tape, rendering it removable. Problem solved and when I sold it it looked as new.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thank you for sharing this Marios! That's a really innovative solution that isn't permanent! Well done!

      I’ve thought about doing this with my acoustic bass as well! But didn’t put enough thought into it as to how it could be done, great info!

    • @MotoGreciaMarios
      @MotoGreciaMarios 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@bassimprovjams3772 It works as follows:
      1. Tightly attach some aluminum foil or wrapping membrane on the area that needs "humping" using some masking tape on its edges. You want this so the epoxy doesn't come in direct contact with the bass otherwise it will attach itself permanenently onto it. You are essentially creating a mould on which to set the epoxy.
      2. Use some black epoxy putty. Don't overdo it in the amount department - if you use too much you'll destroy the arm angle ergonomics. A 4-5mm layer at its fattest is more than enough. Don't get other colours thinking you will paint them later- paints tend to flake off on those heavy-duty areas. Knead it well so as not to allow any seams or other imperfections be apparent.
      3. Apply it onto the area in question making sure it creates a seamless volume in conjunction with the rest of the body of the bass. Make sure it doesn't go beyond the masked areas.
      4. Let it cure overnight.
      5. Remove carefully from the bass and then remove any attached aluminum foil/wrapping membrane from it.
      6. Use some 220 grit sandpaper to even out the shape of your new hump and remove any shape imperfections, fingerprints or other visual imperfections.
      6. Use 500 grit sandpaper to improve the finish. Wet sandpaper works very well
      7. Use a removable marker to mark where exactly its positioning on the bass is. You need this because step #9 becomes challenging without it.
      8. Attach some double-sided sticky tape on the hump. Use short and thin strips so it doesn't create folds underneath which will compromise the overall quality of the attachment.
      9. Remove the cover of the tape and use the marked guide you did at step #7 to place the hump exactly on the spot needed. Once it touches the bass is sticks really hard so you've got to hit the target right at the first touch.
      10. Enjoy the new contour of your bass's body.

    • @MotoGreciaMarios
      @MotoGreciaMarios 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@LowEndLobster Happy to have helped. If you use two different grits of sandpaper after it cures (like 220 and then 500) you can get it aesthetically pleasing as well.

    Nice extensive review. Recently got a BTB and have to say I really like the bass and was surprised by the quality. Impeccable fretwork, very even across the board with a good low B. I also like the sound of the pick ups. They arent as bright and zingy as Nordstrands but they sound good to my ears and do well in a mix. The sharp edge is one thing that can bother you (I can adjust). Its not a light weight either. Other than that I think its really a great bass for the money and I own/have owned basses way more expensive than this one. It can stand its ground.

    Interesting; I didn't think that the pickup voicing was overly muffled but they also don't sound as if they have a good dynamic range, to be honest. The body contour is an interesting feature to note; I have a Schecter Riot Eight that has the same sort of contouring, but it's not as pronounced, and maybe that slightly less contour makes a difference in play-ability. I also don't do tapping or pop and slap on it so that might make a difference as well. Somewhat surprised that there isn't a gig bag included for what this bass sells for. I'm really not a fan of the Soundgear Series so I like that this line offers an alternative

    The locking jack is the most hateful part of the BTB's, which is a pity as the jack quality is actually pretty good. Removing the tiny red plastic part after disassembling the jack takes about two minutes and removes the issue forever.

  • @scottfeldstein7264
    @scottfeldstein7264 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I disagree on the pickups. I find no fault there. But the hard edge is stupid and the locking jack is annoying. And I should know, I've owned this bass for more than 2 years now. The real star of this show, though, is the neck. Somehow it's engineered so well that I can bring the neck relief down to 8 thou and get string heights of 4.5, 3.5, 3, 3, and 3/64ths without any unwanted buzz. Killer!

    The main flaw with the electronics isn't the pickups, it's the preamp. The stock Ibanez pres are mediocre at best and they muffle the sound like crazy. Swapping the preamp for something more transparent makes a world of difference. I had a BTB686SC with the same pickups and preamp, but I swapped the pre for a four-band Audere classic, and it was like a completely new bass.

    I have the btb 776 PB. The body is mahogany, top is burled Poplar best top I've seen on this model as I've seen a number of them online. It's burled it's quilted it's flamed all in one top just gorgeous!!! I've had it for a long time. Regarding your review about the pickups and the preamp. The bass plays beautifully, but I could not use it in any musical setting or recording because it was just too boomy. I was typically just running it flat I would have to cut the low ends just to get a decent tone so I never got to use it in a musical setting just playing around at home. I finally decided I have some money I'm going to change out the electronics because everything else about this bass I love. I started with the preamp. I went with the Delano sonar 2 with a push pull volume so I could run passive if I wanted to. It fixed everything! I love the pickups they were not the problem. It was that junky 18-volt bartolini made for Ibanez. It instantly became my main bass. I rarely play anything else now. By the way, one of the main reasons I never messed with the pickups prior to the preamp now that I think about it is because the size is odd. I could not find replacements that were that same size. Thank God the pickups weren't the problem

    I have an older MIK BTB bolt-on and I never really noticed the sharp edge on it. Maybe it's constructed a little different. I also play guitar and the edge on a Les Paul does annoy me a little, but maybe where I wear a strap on that and the BTB alleviates that problem. The BTB came with dead electronics, so I took out the pickups and replaced them with an EMG J set; it looks ugly with them swimming in the middle of the cavities, but since the bass was already beat to hell, I don't care. It sounds really nice to me and I don't even have an EMG preamp connected. I got rid of the locking jack too since it was annoying.

    I had this bass and I think those pickups sounded muddy. I wired individual pickups in parallel and connected the input to +6db on the preamp. Sounded way better. I also experimented with the pickups wired in single coil and they sounded great also. You might have to install Series, Single and Parallel switch to get the best from the bass.

    I have a BTB605MS (one of the new multiscale ones) - I can definitely agree with the sharp body edge and annoying locking jack issues. Otherwise I have no real issues with it, it has the expanded preamp that has the passive toggle switch for the preamp, and the T1's are much better than the muddy Bartolinis.

    I couldn t agree more. I have an srms805 that i upgradrd with big blades from nordstrand, the bh2 are just bad for most things on the market in therm of pedals and preamps. I also had a btb1935 bil that had aguilars. Stelar bass, stelar sound and overall my faourite bass. But the reason why i had to return it... It had a warped neck from factory. Ibanes have some serious QC issues lately. Over the past 2 years i have played 5 ibanez bases ranging from their 300 series upnto the premium 1800 series and all have had serius issues from factory. Busted hardware, poor paint jobs, chiped fretboards, electronics that weren t soldered properly, defective pickups, the lot. I personally had to put 500 euros extra for my srms to solve the pups, neck, shielding, soldering. And as i said earlier, i returned the btb. It sad that a 1600+ euro btb can be beat by a 850 euro marcus m7 5 string. Which i bough right after the btb. Any way! Greav video Lobster! Keep it up!

  • @Mezziah777

    I have an earlier model with the MK-2 pickups and pre-amp in it.
    Didn't really gel with them either at first when I was at music school.
    They sounded pretty good by themselves, but in the mix with a band, they just never fit.
    After school though, I joined a band playing Industrial Metal, and I found the Bartolinis to fit this style a lot better, especially with overdriven tones.
    That sharp edge also bothered me at first, but when I play metal I tend to straighten my wrist to get more power in my notes, so the edge doesn't get in the way anymore, even when I'm tracking sitting down.
    So not a very versatile bass sadly, but for what I'm currently using it for, it pretty perfect.

Based on my understanding this basses are identical in craftsmanship and the only difference is the use of the more quality PU and electronics.

    I had an SR and a BTB at the same time. They both had Bart's. I did a tone comparison. They practically sound the same. It must be the Bart's. I don't mind the tighter spacing of the SR and why carry the extra 2 lbs of weight from the BTB?!? So I sold the BTB. I also didn't like the individual saddles on the BTB. You had to make sure you put a break angle on the B string. Otherwise it sounded muddy and floppy. Construction wise. Very good.

    Why do almost all Bartolini pickups sound like they have a hardwired high-pass filter in them? At least all of the Ibanez basses that come with Bartolinis sound like that. I haven't tested the U.S made Bartolini pickups though (I think the ones that Ibanez uses are not U.S made, right?).

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep, it's because the MK1's and BH2's aren't 'real' bartolinis. Real barts TBH sound WAY better. These BH2s are made by Cort and definitely suck compared to the USA ones. Check out my FGN JMJ mod video with the Barts, that's a good example of the 'real' Bart sound

  • @WillardTurner

    Hey lobster, if you open up the back cover you'll notice there's some switches on the preamp. I can't remember which ones I flipped on mine, but there are some switches that make a noticeable difference in tone and I was able to get one that I liked considerably better than stock.
    You're right about that body edge. It was one of the main design flaws on my single cut 6-string model. I also noticed that it was nearly impossible to adjust the trust rod all the way, because they put it at the bottom of the net and did not route a large enough well for the hex key to fit into properly. Aside from those two faults I liked mine very much, but ended up selling it and purchasing one of the premium models with the nordstrand big single pickups. I noticed on the premium model The edge on the body is less pronounced and therefore much more comfortable, although I'd still really prefer around it body like most if not all other bases.
