    I love your videos.. Your style and un cluttered delivery are much appretiated.. Also thank you for confirming the utter pointlessness of "upgrading" to save 150 grams.. It really is more of a wallet "downgrade".. All that and 1/2 cup of coffee less would achieve the same.. As a longtime roadie I am constantly looking for lighter weight but also trying to balance the amount of weight loss from my bike with the concomitant weight loss in my pocket.. You have done us a service today...

    Not facing the bottom bracket shell risks mis-alignment and premature demise of the bearings, knowing the tolerances most bikes are manufactured to I would consider this to be fundamental good working practise…..

    • @mhondapants
      @mhondapants 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree. Please advise what the alignment looked like on this install as there will be powdercoat on the BB shell which would have no bearing (sorry!) on the original BB fitted.
      I modded my Nickel Edition to external BB cups and removing the plating with the facing tool was a pain.

    An expensive upgrade for not a lot of weight saving, and only available in 50T whereas the older standard one has 44T, 50T and 54T options. I also wonder about the ease and cost of replacing the sprocket chainring section. It's very easy on the standard spider and not that expensive.

    • @brilliantbikes
      @brilliantbikes  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment
      The superlight chaining is available in 50T or 56T - the replacement is "fairly easy" - we're going to make a video on that
      The chainring is definitely more expensive than the current (as used on Spider / C Line one) and not quite so easy to change / replace

    You don’t save much weight but i believe this design can handle more watt into it. Square taper is so old fashioned and best for leisure amount of power.
    The bb threading on the Brompton are not good from the factory despite their marketing. Ive been told the older ones have straight threading while newer one needs rethreading and refacing.
    I got into the habit while hand tightening cups on both ends, i would put the axl through the cups to keep the alignment while i hand tighten both sides. Then pull out the axl and tighten down and torque down if you like.

    Some queries:
    There seems to be green Loctite or similar on the BB threads; won't this be negated by the grease?

  • @john3892
    @john3892 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Another well-produced video - efficient, informative and slightly tongue in cheek. As for the subject matter: is this really what Brompton spends its R&D budget on? In the real world this lighter crankset is an irrelevance, though inevitably it may become a talking-point in the cafes and wine bars of Chelsea and Putney. Also, as we sort through our collections of expensive specialist bike tools is it really necessary to remind us how to tighten a nut (“Righty, Tighty “etc). Have you yet decided whether the audience for these useful practical videos is more likely to be composed of capable d-i-y ers or children? Just off for a ride, as the BBC forecasters have said that the Mist and Murk will clear, there will be no Spits and Spots of rain, so I need not fear Dank and Drab conditions.

    • @gerlunatorres
      @gerlunatorres 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I suppose it becomes relevant when you replace tens of bike parts. This guy, in New York, spent almost US$10,000.00 to make his T-line weight 7.03 Kg. - th-cam.com/video/76pMyBkm3V8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=7RIxZ4YJd_CDE5Z8

  • @charles0414
    @charles0414 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    50T chainring is too heavy for 6 speed and too small for the 2/4 speed. Also, I think you can save about 100g just by replacing the bottom bracket to a titanium one without replacing the crankset.

    Crank set: super light 650g = standards 650g (the same? How come? The super light is made of carbon anyway, isnt' it?). And BB: super light 101g < standards 269g (168 grams heavier than super light version). So the super light carbon set is lighter than the standards by 168grams. Am I missing something in my math? I can't get 260 gram difference at all.

    • @andrew8992
      @andrew8992 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are right. The “Super light” crank appears to weigh the same as the standard crank set only because the “super light” includes the axel. Where as on the standard the axel is an integral part of the BB. And yes your maths is right, the overall weight saving is only 160ish grams, not the 260ish stated.

  • @KD__.
    @KD__. 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Unreal so you get no weight saving from the crank set just the BB so save time and money and only swap the BB. That's interesting 👍🏻

    • @kr15uk
      @kr15uk 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Technically BB is hollow and axle is connected to the crank itself, I wonder what’s lightest square taper BB is. I’ve switched to Shimano UN300 which apparently is 10g heavier so not it.

  • @K1989L
    @K1989L 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I wouldn't do this for weight saving.. but to have 165mm cranks and oversize BB-bearings I would!

    When I bought my Top, Flame painted "SuperlightM6LXBrompton" in 2019 (600mm seat post as standard in Scandinavia), I had my Ancient Type, square bottom bracket changed to my own, Chinese bracket from titanium with Ceramic Balls, at first "Free Service"! For now with much titanium and carbon additions and changes my bike weighs 8,5 kilo, and still with my mudguards, as a "Rainy Dane"! I expect with a carbon handlebar and more changes, also titanium brake parts, to be able to reach at least 8 kilo?
    The clamps on those guards, in spite of the original Titanium Stays, are made from "Heavy Metal", for which I have a set of Chinese made, Carbon clamps and Alu holders to be changed when the Danish "Day of Summer" arrives, eventually unexpected?
    I do like my bike to look as "Standard" as possible, not to advertise "Expensive Bike/Parts", so you are hardly able to notice anything Special on my bike (Though a Brompton is indeed expensive, even as "Standard"!).
    I do wonder though why English Bikes in GB are sold without mudguards, as the climate is only a fraction better and less rainy than in my home, Denmark?
    "The new set", is it able to use my one sided, Brompton Folding Pedal as before? The Prime Idea of a small wheeled and "Hard Rolling" Brompton is Transport as folded, and I would - hate being able to loose a Pedal during that!!!
    I intend to put my folding Pedal under my "drill tower" to add some extra holes in the frame, for less weight, as on also ancient racing bikes. I have seen Campagnolo "Brake Grips" given so many holes in them, that I wouldn't trust my dear life to those! But extra holes in a pedal hardly compromises strength? Finn. Denmark 😀
