PUT VOLUME @ MAX !!! (level = low). Billy Kilson tearing up his drumset with a solo in "free for all" with the Dave Holland Big Band at NSJ2003 in the Hague.
I'm convinced there are not many (or maybe no) drummers that can do what he is doing. There's several types of players outthere. Technical can also mean boring, because it has no guts, no feel. What Billy does is technically strong and has lots of feel. See Dave Holland smiling at him all the time. Actions speak louder than words ! And haha, u wish you could play like that ! It sure ain't you sitting upthere, because if you were able to, you wouldn't even bother commenting...
“Seek ye the LORD while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.” - Isaiah 55:6-7 ----- God allowed this message to come cross your path today because He loves you...yes YOU. We are living in the last days of this life as we know it. Come to Jesus while there is still time. If you’re ready to make Jesus the Lord of your life please repeat this simple prayer: Lord, I admit I am a sinner. I need and want Your forgiveness. I accept Your death as the penalty for my sin and recognize that Your mercy and grace is a gift You offer to me because of Your great love, not based on anything I have done. Cleanse me and make me Your child. By faith I receive You into my heart as the Son of God and as Savior and Lord of my life. From now on, help me live for You, with You in control. In Your precious name, Amen. If you sincerely prayed that prayer, you are now heaven bound. Find a good God-fearing Christian church near you and learn more about King Jesus and His Kingdom. God bless you and have a great day!
Yeah,Billy is awesome. Saw Dave Holland Quintet last NSJ2007 again, and i can understand why Nate Smith IS the drummer for Dave... It was another "kicksass" performance of the highest quality jazz that is there 2day. For young AND old...
i agree, i wish billy still laid it down with dave. but then again i did see them live with nate and that guy is nuts. adhd meets a drum set.... dave's band is for sure in the top two of my favorite big bands along with jaco pastorius big band. you all should check out billy's group BK Groove if you haven't already.
Seriously listen to 'Free For All' and this part of the tune is absolutely terrifying. The point where Chris Potter (i think) and Mr Kilson are playing by themselves is outrageously energetic
But this is what that kind of music is about! Not to think too much! I mean ... listen to the solo, you can't denie, it really grooves! If you only think, that you must show everything you can do technically and this idea and the other idea ... then it is nothing but sports, and no music!
Hey, why don't you give us a link to a video of a drummer playing that kind of "structure, melody and ideas relating to one another"? Really, I'm curious!
This was years ago, but i think it might have been somone using my account. But it is easy to play with this chap as he is at these drumming shows a lot of the times. I used to go to drumming shows a lot, Ive played with the likes of Frank from Aborted, Derek Roddy, Chris Adler etc, so it is a possibility that my uncle or brother even has 'played' with this guy. There just normal people at the end of the day.
@Gman4MF although i have played with kilson and you haven't most probably :P I just don't have the time to do it full time to be up 'there' all the time.
well, if you're that good at playing maybe you should go and ask dave holland to let him join his band since "you can do what his doing within' a week" and upload a video of how's suppose to dig it, if that's not the case the you should shut up and show some respect for what Kilson is doing, he has playing for more than 20 years with great musicians and lot of styles and I can say without knowing you, that that's more that you have ever done on your "thirty years playing professionally"
Sounds like you haven't invested any real time in examining the cd this performance is from. Your third comment extreme hyperbole. Your fourth is just sort of irrelevant. Your fifth and sixth comments are just factually incorrect. One wonders if you're just a plumber who plays a drummer on the internet.
lol.... im saying he's dropping a bit of hiphop loops when he is at it, and he's known for that shit... if u can't hear that you just got noob ears. go flame elsewhere k kid? thx
Wow. This is what people are taking as artistry? There's nothing he did that any of you couldn't do within a week! I've played professionally for thirty years and I can tell you that solo was a lot of hustling. No structure. No melody. No ideas relating to one another. Just a bunch of showy flailing. Anybody can do that in any meter. I'd like to see Mr. Kilson perform something more technical and thoughtful. Why do some drummers think that fast, unstructured and sweaty equals "jazz" or good. C+

He just tore 34,078 people a new one. And that's not counting the people in the room with him at the time. Thanks, Billy K.
nice.... one of my favorite drummers, love the way he adds hiphop flavor
Wow
Thw MAN wit "that East Coast style of playing".

there seems to be quite a list of fantastic drummers out there, but i cant think of any that put on a show quite like Billy.
Seriously listen to 'Free For All' and this part of the tune is absolutely terrifying. The point where Chris Potter (i think) and Mr Kilson are playing by themselves is outrageously energetic
Sleep cant the song anywhere

What u mean with extended play?
You cannot argue with the groove from 3:41 - barri entrance
Good point;-)
Some hiphop, some funk, some rock and lot of jazz... Whatever ! This solo is "tha bomb"
But plz explain hiphop flavor part, i'm curious !
Love that solo!
Just wanted to say he looks a bit like Kobe Bryant.
Haha.
@Gman4MF although i have played with kilson and you haven't most probably :P I just don't have the time to do it full time to be up 'there' all the time.
強者達と渡り歩いたデイヴ・ホランド、自己のBIGBANDで安らぎが!~~ドラムは強力ビリー・キルソン #jazzm
@Colorburned I'm not a fan of Kilson, but I have to admit that his style here works good
You have just heard the Bruce Lee of percussion! There may be some cats out there better than Billy, but I'm still waiting for them to show up!
in those early days, Lionel Hampton sounded like Steve Nelson...same stuff....
mah !!
Haha ! :-))
"ADHD meets a drumset"
BK Groove ? I will check 'em out!
Thnx 4 the tip!
Here on TH-cam?
and i'm the president of the United States, you know ...
