The shooting board is the first thing we made at school woodwork class - followed by a picture frame. 😊
In Europe we have to learn hand tools before machines so that we understand how wood behaves.

Rub together a couple pieces of 80-grit sandpaper over the pieces, letting some grit fall onto it, and they will not slide. Or just sprinkle a little salt on it.

Where do you get apple plywood? I have never heard of it.
