If you watch or read any of Phillips’ interviews from either film you can easily believe the theory he tanked this movie on purpose. He made fun of the fact he tricked comic book fans into watching a “real movie” with the first one because he had a taxi driver inspired idea, wanted a built in fan base to drive audience traffic, so he molded the joker character around his original idea. Then the studio wanted a part 2… he made sure he got paid 20 million, Phoenix got 50 million, and he set out to destroy the character of Arthur purely because he was irritated to be forced into making another. He was also irritated so many fans related to Arthur and cheered for him. He wanted to tear down what he had made before to teach the fans a lesson about applauding someone like Arthur. All of this can be found littered throughout his interviews and posts.
You losers just didn't pay attention to the first movie. You saw it through the lens of and with the expectations of a dumb adolescent comic book. It was always a bourgeois tragedy about an absolute loser. Arthur Fleck was never going to be a criminal mastermind matching wits with Batman.
He sounds like a tool. Be happy you get to make art, don't ruin it on purpose and sully your career and reputation with it. No one forced him to make a second one, if he didn't want to then he should have said no. But obv too greedy to turn down 20 million.
idk that sounds like the most Joker move ever to build up to anticipation for a sequel and then make pretty much everyone unhappy lol. “It’s not about money, it’s about sending a message. Everything burns.” 🤷♂️😎
There it is! Marc Bernardin Nails what’s wrong with this movie - even if you’re making art you have to DELIVER what the crowd came for. Follow the mission statement. That’s what killed me and millions of people about the movie. I left unfulfilled from Joker 2.
A realistic Comic Book Character portrayed as close to real life was done successfully by the Dredd movie made in 2012 which became an cult classic. Joker was a fantastic movie and delivered beyond expectations but the sequel turned out to be an missed opportunity to continue Arthur Fleck’s journey into becoming the actual Joker in his own universe !
Joker 2 resonated with me because it felt like Todd Philips Stardust Memories. However, I knew when I went to that fan screening it was not going to resonate with the majority of people. I agree that film did the opposite of what its audience wanted.
I’ll always stand behind Dogma and Mallrats personally. Dogma was insane the amount of people it had in it. Chris Rock, Rickman, jason lee, alanis morrisette, Matt Damon and Ben affleck, George Carlin, Fiorentino, Jay and Bob, Salma Hayek, Garofolo. That shits nuts

I know lightning can strike regarding a movie with a huge budget making an even more huge profit but such occurrences are rare. While Todd Phillips was allowed to pursue his vision without studio interference, he should have kept the budget as low as possible. Blumhouse and A24 have proven that reasonably budgeted movies can be profitable, enjoyable and occasionally worthy of a nomination for an award. Not my idea, but someone on YT mentioned that only one audience test screening might have enabled those in charge of this film to (quoting my car's AI) recalculate.
I'm waiting for a home release, just like I did with the first and I'm less interested in the sequel, so it was never going to be a cinema watch for me.

It was incredible a masterpiece better then the original in alot of ways I couldn’t get to the full 10/10 8/10 for joker 2 for me I loved the 430 movie a lot that was a 10/10 movie one of your best movies there was just Movies that just over shadowed it I made the travel to see it in theaters I bought it on digital I’m planing on getting it physical
Ok, so I got around to watching X-Men '97 and I don't know what the hell bamf man is talking about. The way he was talking about it sounded like it was one of the best things put out this year but I haven't seen what's so special about it. Just like any other after-school cartoon. Millennials and their nostalgia. That's the only thing I can see that would create all the hype around this.
I’m sadly disappointed with the film but that is purely based on my expectation so I believe that I have this coming. I would like to give it a second go later on with a fresh perspective and maybe I might have a different opinion on this. When I learned of its musical number, I was expecting Dancer in the Dark staring Bjork. Her world is full of music and dancing, whereas the reality is a rather different take. Joker Folie A Deux seemed to have that nature, although I think it was executed poorly. I am also not fond of Arthur getting R abused later on. It was downright unnecessary for the plot. I mean it led to nowhere in the aftermath as if it never existed. The ending was also quite disappointing as well. That said, I will give this film another shot in hopes my perspective differs from my current opinion.
That's pretty much how Marc does things and has done for awhile. I personally don't mind it, as I like to hear what he'd do differently but can understand why some don't. It's the bane for some of being a writer and in the industry, they can often see how they'd do it. I thought Rebel Ridge was great. Nothing original as it was essentially First Blood meets Reacher but very entertaining and well acted.
Yeah, just as in the case of Joker 2, I simply cannot relate to this concept of expecting movies to follow some pre determined template. Rather than approaching a movie on it's own terms. It's ridiculous to me. Absolutely hostile to art
He doesn't like anything he didn't write or make himself. Considering everything he's written for never make it or get any love says everything you need to know
The Substance was art and a great movie. Joker 2 was not as bad as people are ripping it as. It’s not great but also not horrible. I’d like to see a cut without the musical numbers.
I don't even mind the musical numbers per se. Could probably have cut a couple of them, I don't even mind what the film was essentially about re Arthur Fleck but it was just dull. It was painfully dull. I also really enjoyed The Substance.
I just didn’t care for the artsy fartsy message that Todd had about all the “Jokers” of the world. I just wanted to watch a movie about an Elseworlds Joker descend into madness and become the villain we’re more familiar with. It would’ve been perfect to see this metamorphosis as he developed a relationship with Harley, and then seeing him finally complete his transformation as he wreaked havoc in Gotham. Instead we see Arthur’s character regress and undo his arc from the first movie by revealing that he wasn’t even the real Joker all along. Notice how I haven’t mentioned the musical aspect yet? That was the least of its problems honestly
People are pissed because the director said he doesn't like comic book movies and that he tricked the audience of the first movie into seeing a "real movie" when they thought they were just seeing a comic book thing. Phillips was also irritated that the audience liked and wanted the joker to win. So when writing this movie he purposefully undid all the character dev of Arthur from the first mov. And to make sure the first joker could never be seen as a comic book movie per se, Phillips decided to kill off Arthur and make it very clear that he was not the joker. He wanted to make an homage to taxi driver and decided to name the movie after a comic book character so as to capitalize on his popularity. Which worked. People are irritated because this movie is a fuck you to the first one and all the fans
Loved joker2 People are angry that Arthur isn’t The Joker. It’s called “joker”, he is A joker. If you removed the “Arkham” sign and any reference to Gotham, there’s nothing that makes this the DC Joker. He’s an abused kid grown up into a mentally ill man in a terrible city. Anything else is projecting our expectation of The Joker onto him. (Har)Lee’s reaction to him later in the film is the audiences’ misunderstanding of the movie and the character. She wanted the Joker and he was only ever Arthur (just like the critics) Speaking of the music… the reason for the music? He first saw Lee in music therapy and she sang to him. If it was art therapy, Arthur would have been dancing through paintings to woo her in his hallucinations. Lee’s love language is music. She was a privileged upper East sider. She probably had music, voice, dance lessons as the girl of rich parents. This isn’t a musical, it’s the fever dream of a lovestruck, obsessive mental patient. He’s mentally ill, not a mastermind anarchist. Can anyone honestly say that you could see Arthur from Joker1 planning the downfall of Gotham? Outsmarting any of the batmans we’ve seen (Pattinson’s?!). Do you see him making penguin or the riddler bend the knee? Would Bane freeze at the sight of him?See him walk into a room full of mob bosses and walk out unscathed? Manufacture timed explosives, p0is0n gas, fight Batman hand to hand? He was full of swagger as joker, but he wasn’t smarter; he didn’t demonstrate any greater competency, he had no skills other than a good strut. Even his court skills were true to the story; his defense was so incompetent.. exactly what an uneducated person would be able to do. It’s like the arguments you hear in traffic court by people defending themselves. Heck, this was even shown in the 1st movie. Joker’s super moment on the stairs is shown as him just dancing like an idiot (lots of pelvic thrusts) hearing his own music. He was never The Joker. Even at the end of Joker1 we see him in police custody with no sign of a fight. He probably just sat down on the couch and waited for the police. Remember his plan was self h@rm, not murd3r. He didn’t know what to do next. Then he gets rescued by his followers and he stands on top of the car (again, just a strut) Then we see him hunched over, laughing his painful Arthur laugh smoking a cigarette with another counselor in Arkham. He was caught again. The audience wanted to see him powerful, so it did, but he was still Arthur just playing more roles for atttention and love. They wanted Hannibal Lechter but he was always Buffalo Bill
1:54:00 They should have just fully passed on the mantle of Indiana Jones, and made it the American version of James Bond. Always recast at some point, he needs to always be fighting Nazis
Kev is makin fun pf digital releases, bc, ya kno, self deprication, but I bought and watched it on google just the other night. The 4:30 Movie is quite cute little indi film... Its not really for theatres, fam 😬 not in todays movie goin culture
Kevin needs to start actually watching the movies he reviews - no wonder his viewership keeps dropping, the guy is washed up and can't even keep up with the very things he talks about. Might as well just make it a Marc Bernardin-only podcast. Nothing of value would be lost.
Joker totally got his cheeks clapped in that one scene. If they just beat the crap out of him they would shown it. Just Todd breaking down and humiliating the character so many people loved from the first
Kevins naivete is incredible sometimes, he has far too much faith in Hollywood. His take is 'no-one would have said no to Joker 2, it should have made 2 billion' when everyone else in the world said 'a Joker musical, WTF?!' There is a reason why there was no Taxi Driver 2, no King of Comedy 2, no Falling Down 2. There was no story left to tell. All that was left was a huge pile of hubris.
Movie was 10/10. The Joker folie à deux just did what the Joker did best. It took your little character and “Turned it on Itself”. Look what it did with just a bigger budget and Lady Gaga casting. You know what i noticed? Nobody panics when a Joker movie goes “According to Character”. Even if the character is horrifying. If Todd Phillips said that Joker folie à deux was going to be exactly like it’s predecessor but with more “singing and dancing”, or that the Joker will blow up Gotham City. Nobody panics, because it’s “All apart of the Character”, but if he says that one little Joker isn’t really “HIM” well, then everyone loses their minds! Introduce a little nuance. Upset an established Media, and everything becomes Chaos. Joker folie à deux is an agent of Chaos. Oh, and you know the thing about Chaos? It’s Fair.
I would love to see you and rob zombie make one of these together you have made my all time favorite Batman comics you and rob zombie are my two all time favorite horror film makers sheri has been a real life Harley Quinn for years you named your daughter Harley Quinn smith you both have a unique way of making films Harley Quinn and rob zombie have years experience in music it would be insane to see you two come together to make a Batman universe movie

So Marc's problem with Rebel Ridge was it wasn't the film he wanted to be? He didn't judge the film on it's own terms.
Marc doesn't like anything
Yeah, just as in the case of Joker 2, I simply cannot relate to this concept of expecting movies to follow some pre determined template. Rather than approaching a movie on it's own terms. It's ridiculous to me. Absolutely hostile to art
He doesn't like anything he didn't write or make himself. Considering everything he's written for never make it or get any love says everything you need to know
@@charger23us That's just complete BS.
Isn't covid over in LA? why are they not at the Cantina?
The Substance was art and a great movie. Joker 2 was not as bad as people are ripping it as. It’s not great but also not horrible. I’d like to see a cut without the musical numbers.
I don't even mind the musical numbers per se. Could probably have cut a couple of them, I don't even mind what the film was essentially about re Arthur Fleck but it was just dull. It was painfully dull.
I also really enjoyed The Substance.
I did a double-feature with Joker 2 and The Substance last night and it was amazing. Nearly 5 hours of harrowing entertainment. I loved it.
Same with megalopolis. A disappointment for sure, but not as horrific as everyone said lol
Loved joker2
People are angry that Arthur isn’t The Joker.
She wanted the Joker and he was only ever Arthur (just like the critics)
Speaking of the music… the reason for the music?
Wanna see something REALLY scary?
Mad Love or FO
Kev is makin fun pf digital releases, bc, ya kno, self deprication, but I bought and watched it on google just the other night. The 4:30 Movie is quite cute little indi film... Its not really for theatres, fam 😬 not in todays movie goin culture
Kevin needs to start actually watching the movies he reviews - no wonder his viewership keeps dropping, the guy is washed up and can't even keep up with the very things he talks about.
Might as well just make it a Marc Bernardin-only podcast. Nothing of value would be lost.
Did he just criticize rebel ridge???
Seems like no one got it. Meh, so be it.
Joker 2 terrible film. Fan edits will fix it. Take out all the musical stuff or as much as possible
Joker totally got his cheeks clapped in that one scene. If they just beat the crap out of him they would shown it. Just Todd breaking down and humiliating the character so many people loved from the first
Loved it
Joker 3 will be 2 hours of just explaining the shower scene
It’s Fair.
It's shit. Epic Failure.
❤❤❤❤❤
I would love to see you and rob zombie make one of these together you have made my all time favorite Batman comics you and rob zombie are my two all time favorite horror film makers sheri has been a real life Harley Quinn for years you named your daughter Harley Quinn smith you both have a unique way of making films Harley Quinn and rob zombie have years experience in music it would be insane to see you two come together to make a Batman universe movie
Hated the first one. Won't see the second. Definitely not Joker from the comics. Joker is smart and enjoys his madness. They just aped the name to make money. Derivative drivel.
Coming soon, the sequel no one thought would happen... Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight 4... THE MUSICAL!
Green Lantern on Broadway with Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively. Haha
Its a musical, of course it was gonna fail. Im not even gonna torrent it.
