    I'm actually with Mark here. WHich is a bizarre thing for me to write. The platforms are platforms. There's like a town square. If you're a builder who built a sidewalk and years later a murderer stands on your sidewalk to harm someone, you don't blame the builder. You don't blame the city planner. You don't blame the architects. You blame the murderer. So exactly how is any of this Mark's fault? Did he produce the harmful content? Did his company? Did those companies intentionally support harmful content or did harmful content find a way to sneak around? Why are we not attacking the people who actually produced the harmful content?

    • @Phlarx
      @Phlarx 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't disagree with the sentiment, but I do find the "town square" analogy hard to swallow. A traditional, physical town square with sidewalks and benches, sees many orders of magnitude less people than these major social media platforms. Just like there are major differences between small towns and large metropolises, there are major differences between physical town squares and these platforms. I don't know if those differences are the root cause of these issues we're seeing, but the facts are that we do see these issues. Maybe attacking the content producers will be enough, but I don't think so. I think the sheer scale would overwhelm those efforts.

    • @ohlala2219
      @ohlala2219 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Your analogy is a little of in my opinion. Let's keep the town square but not the murder. There was a fundamental error in the planning of the town square and people are getting hurt constantly by visiting the town square because the grund isn't builit the right way. And other people have to see people falling, lying down hurt on the ground or getting dragged down by other people falling. That is why you blame the builider or the planner.

    • @akimboist
      @akimboist 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Take a step back and look at what you’re comparing… a sidewalk being built with a murderous crime being committed on it compared to social media’s effect on growing brains. The fact of the matter is people, social media like instagram and tik tok are rotting the future of this country’s brains. Not to mention China storing our information… but teens will always want to communicate with each other in different technological ways, especially if it’s the “new trend”. They will see many clout chasers and people living extraordinarily lavish lifestyles and they get extremely depressed. There’s more too it than “it starts at home” that’s the EASIEST thing we can do as a society is point the finger at the parents. There’s so much that goes on in a teenagers life and access to social media can be very detrimental to their mental health.
      Folks, this isn’t the future grandma and grandpa were telling us about. We need to seriously change as a society and how we treat other people. We’re so used to centuries of bad behavior and the deconditioning of this is VERY HARD I know! Stick to Viber, reddit & youtube. Twitter is CANCER. TikTok is CANCER. Facebook & Instagram have mostly very toxic communities. Be more empathetic and kind towards one another.

    Anytime you create a space for people to express themselves, there will be negative consequences. It is not Zuckerberg's fault that people using Facebook do so in irresponsible or harmful ways. Allowing minors to interact with strangers is always a bad idea.
    But it doesn't just fall on Facebook. It is the parents who are responsible for the children. Those 13 to 15 year olds who saw nudity or were solicited by older men were put in that situation because their parents played a part in putting them in those positions.
    If all of this is such a problem and parents want to blame a man who created a social network for what their own children interact with on that social network, then the solution is for Facebook to ban anyone under the age of 18. If it is so dangerous for miners and adults to interact on the same website, prevent kids from joining the social network.
    Hawley is wrong here. He wants to hold Mark Zuckerberg accountable for the actions of the people using his service and his inability, despite much effort, to stop every single problem on his platform.

    The problem with Josh's argument is he's ultimately talking about a social platform and you can't fully control how people interact especially when age gates are ineffective.
    It's like dropping your pre-teenage daughter and her friends at the mall unsupervised. If some creep starts making advances toward them, Josh's argument is that the mall is at fault - when we all know who we'd blame in that scenario.
    That's the critical error conservatives walk into when talking about social media. In every other context, even tragic ones, the right understands personal responsibility and especially parental engagement. Social media is the subject where they blame everything else.

      @@robrio89 If you wanna mention exploitation and peedo trade rings we'd be in agreement. Tech companies and law enforcement should co-op to handle that, obviously.
      Josh isn't talking about that in this clip, he's talking about dubious correlations using inconclusive studies - the same way the left does to support their busy body grievances. A lot of the conservative arguments against social media boils down to media, yes even borderline media, that's not illegal so much as distasteful or against their value system. I see it all the time and some will straight up tell you that's what it is.
      The platform or medium isn't the problem in these cases. It always comes down to minors access to things parents don't want, but govt can't do parents job for them. And should not.
