When I was a junior in high school my family bought 50 acres and we lived in a Army squad tent for 4 years while cutting down trees to season for the house then cutting up lumber on a chainsaw mill and building our own home. We had cows, goats, pigs, chickens grew our own food and canned it all up on a wood cook stove my family still lives on the homestead and it’s been one of the greatest blessing to have such a wonderful way of life. Always hard work but it’s ours.

One thing I learned from hind sight is to build my storage/barns/shops way bigger than my first idea.
I now have 3 small buildings instead of one big one.
Trying to remember what item is in what building is a pain LOL Its usually a financial barrier but in a perfect world that would be my choice

I'm 4 years into the same thing brother. The To-do list is never ending, and if I don't know how to do something that needs done, my "entertainment" "down"-time gets spent researching and learning w/e it is that's approaching.
The only relaxation I get is from the depth of my sleep from exhaustion and besides property tax I'm beholden to no one. Everything I've built is a temporary structure, so no permitting necessary.

So a buddy of mine got out of the military and moved to Idaho with his wife. He grew up being a farmer/farm hand before he joined at 18. He was a mechanic and his wife was an electrical engineer. His BIL is a software/robotics engineer. Well they now own 300ish acres of land and multiple kinds of livestock and grow a large amount of their own food in greenhouses on an aquaponics setup with 3 different kinds of eating fish. They have automated 90% of their daily lives in multiple ways. It’s very impressive but it took them 4 years of intense work and trial and error to do it.

Your priorities may change a bit once Jen has moved there. Every day is always filled with routine tasks and such but as you start on the house, it will definitely change your process for a while.
It's unlikely you'll need encouragement since you're so motivated and dedicated to doing all the things on your homestead. But if you ever get distracted, you can just announce what you're trying to do and this crowd will cheer you on! We all love what you're doing and enjoy all the updates!😘

Since you have small animals (chicken and ducks) I recommend you get a blue nose Pit rather than a Sheppard breed cause the Sheppards are bread to kill the smaller ones and itd be harder to train them not to eat them. NOTE: It IS possible to train them to ingore their instincts but it'd be a little torturous for them since everytime they see the ducks they would feel the urge to eat in every fiber of their being. Pits aren't meant for hunting they were bread to guard kings chambers and castles. So long as you get a pup or an already well train pit. Keep in mind that Pits are naturally curious and energetic ESPECIALLY as a puppy but a lot of treats and patience and you couldnt ask for a better livestock guard dog. I actually have a pit as a guard dog over my bunny farm. She and tge bunnies are really good friends and one black one especially has a special relationship with my pit that the bunny will put her head in the pits mouth when my pit yawns and my pit plays with the bunny and is VERY careful not to hurt her small yet fluffy friend

I would show him your videos, but he is mostly blind, and only barely connected to the world (in order to have a working phone for emergencies - we had to use CB radios for that when I was growing up). He is one of the last Hippy-homesteaders left in the area out there.
