OMG, this is amazing. The Legacy of Kain games were my childhood. Especially Soul Reaver. IMO, the first Souls-like ever. I love them all though. Blood Omen 1-2, Soul Reaver 1-2, and Defiance. Such a good series that just disappeared. I'm so happy right now.

Soul Reaver had some of the easiest boss battles I've ever encountered in any game, and I'm not even that good as a player.
@@eddiecoker4808 Allow me to elaborate. Not so much in difficulty, but it was one of the first 3D action adventure games that had an intertwined map where you had to unlock gates, lifts, etc in order to create shortcuts. As well as having to gain new abilities in order to progress to some areas. It's also one of the first 3D action games that had fast travel points to each major area by way of the gates in the spectral realm. Not to mention its gothic look and environmental hazards and so on. Y'all may not see much of a comparison, but if you don't believe me, go back and read the words of FromSoft developers around the time of Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne. They say that Soul Reaver was a huge inspiration to them.

Yeah, but difficulty is what makes a souls-like ... Well... Souls-like. The exploration and use of power-ups / abilities to progress, as well as an interlinked world, is more akin to a Metroidvania genre. The gothic thematic elements, while common among souls and souls-like games aren't a necessary part of them. But you're right about the aesthetic inspirations, there is definitely a lot of commonality in terms of some of the elements in the Soulsborne titles.
The series that TRULY needs a remake!
As well as a final game. The cliffhanger from Defiance kills me.
Blood Omen 2 deserves more love. In a era of "good guy" heroes Kain was an amazing, brutal and unforgiving protagonist.
Underrated i loved Lok Blood omen 2. The part when you *spolier warning:

I hope they remastered the whole series Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2, Blood Omen 2, Legacy of Kain: Defiance and release the canceled partly developed game Legacy of Kain: Dead son.
Maybe skip Blood Omen 2, it was terrible and very disappointing for me
Dead Son can stay dead, it had a completely different feel to it compared to the OG series's's's's's
I think you mean remake the whole as that would entail all games being built from the ground up with massive gameplay changes and improvements. Dead Sun should not be developed as Dark Prophecy is where the real money is to made.

They should get the Darksiders team working on a remake. Darksiders feels like a spirtual successor to Lecacy of Kain so im sure they could handle it.

Soul Reaver stood out as one of my favorites on the Dreamcast. It was my first in the series.

Yeah was a travesty that defiance had no followup.
The ending was ambiguous. It was left open to continue, but the story was deffs done. Look at the ending of blood omen. It didn't need sequels, but both endings were made ambiguous.

Raziel's story was completed. Kain's was not.
I never could finish soul reaver 2. It was far too much for my potato powered PC could handle at the time.
The voice acting on those games were on a level of their own for sure.
It's on PS2 as well. If you don't have a physical console, you can always emulate it, I think PS2 emulators don't need a powerful PC.

Yeah, one of the only reasons i might not like a remake, is if they redid the VA work. Not a lot of people could replace tony jay.
Then again, the destroy all humans remakes didn't.
I love all the Legacy of Kain collections, very excited about it but we need a remake of Tenchu Stealth Assassin as well

As much as I am excited for a remaster in a perfect world I would like a complete gameplay remake in the style of, pun very intended, a souls-like game. The original gameplay already sort of lends itself to that style.
I feel the same way about this series as I do about games like Bloodborne. Take a chance on a remaster/remake and let the fans prove how much demand and support there are for these franchises.
If things go well, they can always go forward with making new entries in the respective series.
Give the old fans a chance to relive the nostalgia and give new gamers a chance to experience what made those older franchises great.

I have the complete collection but a remaster would be a dream come true just in terms of being able to play them with better controls and silky smooth frame rates
The voice acting and the script for the original games definitely made this series great. My favorite was Tony Jay (voice of the elder god) he sets it off with the first line "I know you Rahziel for you are worthy." Sadly he passed away. I wonder who could replace him and the way he brought that character to life.

Would kill for a full new entry taking some queues from the cancelled LoK: Dead Sun. Where the real modern urban world and Nosgoth both exist.
Nosgoth is a fictional world that has nothing to do with earth. So therefore I don’t believe earth exists in that universe. IMO.
Egads! Is it really happening?! As a _massive_ fan of the original games I can't emphasise enough how much I'm looking forward to this! Personally, I do hope they choose to step things up a bit with the new releases: Up the graphics, expand on the game world and allow visits to previous points of interest and give a bit more insight into the lore. I would also love if they manage to incorporate a bit more of what was supposed to be present game mechanics in the first Soul Reaver game as well as story features and, last but not least, keep the first game's telekinesis where you pick stuff up by simply pulling them to your hand, which sadly didn't make a reappearance in the second game. I also hope they keep the original voices and, if needed, add a few extra lines recorded by Michael Bell and Simon Templeman respectively. Sadly, I understand this is not a plausible thing regarding The Elder God (R.I.P. Tony Jay), but I hope that doesn't need to be a wrench in the machinery of it all. In short, I'd love for them to make a game worthy of the limitations of modern day consoles and properly introduce the games to newer audiences with the same sense of awe as it did to us way back when. The Legacy of Kain games are superb (Blood Omen 2 being the awkward cousin, obviously), and the desperately need to be brought back into the world of gaming. They deserve a center spot as the masterpieces they are.
It should be a remake with Amy Henig getting 1000% complete control of the legacy of Kain series
I find it quite fascinating that not only did we get this leak, but we also got the announcement of the next Darksiders game. Some might say that series filled a void that was left behind by Legacy of Kain.
And to also add a bit of a correction, Michael Bell (voice of Raziel) is 86, not in his 60s. I'm not certain he will make a return, but I don't think he would need to, as Raz's story was more or less complete after Defiance.
remaster is re polishing whats already there vs remake is completely re making the game from ground up, we have to understand this and move past the confusion of both lol id love a remake with current gen physics and gameplay, controls, etc

I agree, a remaster is the way to go. There is so much that can be done with lighting, shadows, textures and model work. But keep the original identity.
If this is true then it's great news and a dream come true, I just have a few requests:
1. Please include Turel as a boss in SR1 this time
2. Don't forget to remaster Defiance, the trilogy is incomplete without it. Also, if this does happen, please fix the camera so it's not such a pain in the ass this time.
3. Can we FINALLY get the sixth game so that we can FINALLY finish the story? It's been a LONG time coming.
Turiel was a boss in Defiance.
I want to see a full remake of the whole series. It deserves a re-telling of Kain's story, ala MK1. His original story ended up re-looping in on itself, so seeing it told again from scratch with different paths that we haven't seen before would be better than getting a simple up-res or re-skin that just zombie's a great game through an emulator.

I'd like two things, a remaster of the original Soul Reaver, and an FF7 Remake style remake/reboot/sequel.
Some people didn't like all the time travel/multiple worlds things in FF7R, but the Legacy of Kain series already has all of that stuff. So it's a better fit. It would give them a chance to reboot the series so new players can jump in without having to know all the lore and story of previous games, while also still having a link to them.
Update the graphics, but leave the original voice actor audio even if you have to pay them or their estates royalties to do so.
Uber fan here! I adore the Legacy of Kain games, even had the privilege of talking with Simon Templeman, tho it was very brief a few years back, this game is what inspired me to have a working career as an artist and eventually tattoo artist, even did drawings for local art galleries many moons ago, and I still have a pristine copy of soul reaver on the PS1 with the lenticular cover when it first came out, I have a life long obsession with the game, when I caught wind of that snap happy camera man's photo shot of the remastered version I had to stop sit down and do breathing exercises to calm myself down my whole body couldn't stop shaking, my body was shakin to its core with electric tenacity down my spine, it was intense! I eagerly await more info on this, no modern game has ever gotten me this excited, it's great to hear you both talking about this, hay and I loved that Tomb Raider HD collection still got the collectors edition of that, gosh I wish I could play that on my ps5 right now, it's a crying shame the ps5 won't play the older console legacy games I own
There are a few factors/questions that I think tie into the remake and remaster discussion that ties to your previous video on the industry as a whole.
1)Does a remaster cost less that making a remake? If they do the publisher is saving a significant amount on development while cashing in on nostalgia.
2) Given this period of gaming, tapping into the back catalog might be a safer bet.
3) Does this lessen the innovation of the industry?
While I enjoy the idea of remasters and even remakes of classics, I wander if fear of innovation and the weird by big publisher move the industry back to safety of the old? 20 year cycle of nostalgia?
I'm hoping they actually complete the whole series of this game. Especially the premonitions Razel was having when looking in those wormholes 💯💯
I probably played Blood Omen 1 more than anything else ever. Here's hoping for a new Kain led entry some day.
Definitely needs the capcom re remake treatment, also the first soul reaver game still has one of the most epic intros to a videogame ever

Remasters are good, but most are bare minimum graphic updates. These games deserve full remakes.
I agree, combat wise - a remake is in order. However, it'd be a shame to ever have to replace Michael Bell, Simon Templeman or Tony Jay (r.i.p)

Michael Bell voiced your childhood in America. Multiple characters in GI Joe, Transformers, and the Rugrats to name a few. Everyone should Google him because he is such a massive talent.
They should remake the ORIGINAL Blood Omen. It was such a beast of a game. Taking Kain's arsenal of weapons, spells, and forms, and translating them into a modern open world would be freaking nuts, and the world and characters would look AMAZING!
If it is getting a remaster, I'd love it if they did the same kinda thing as the Medievil remaster/remake. It was incredibly faithful to the original, kept a lot of the same feel, used the same audio/voice over, and generally just polished it so it was a much smoother experience. Some of the feel of the original was lost, due to things like the draw distance on the PS1 version and the polygonal/angular atheistic adding to the creepy atmosphere. But, when you finish the game, you unlocked a port of the original. If they could do something similar with Soul Reaver, they'd nail it.
I think the best case scenario is making the originals more available to play and then doing a remake rather than a remaster. The remake would need to keep the tone, story, characters, and original performances, while updating to more modern combat, platforming, puzzles, and graphics.
I wish they did overhaul it. I didn’t spend all this money on the new system to replay the exact same game I got 20 years ago. The original game is like 80 MB maybe less. Overhaul the game and as a bonus add the OG game to it.

No actual way! These were some of my favorite games as a kid! I beat Blood Omen 2 sooooo many times! I loved it! That, Resident Evil 4, and the first 4 Ratchet and Clanks were games I beat at least 20 times each. When I get hooked, I get hooked and The Legacy of Kain definitely did it for me! The only one I didn't play as a youngin was the first Blood Omen, I watched my mom play it in bits and pieces. This series was a masterpiece, fun to play, but the story was so intriguing and just pulled me in to the lore. 😁
I appreciated this series as a teen.
I will definitely appreciate it's themes a hellava lot more as an adult.

The plot was everything to these titles. If Amy Hennig isn't involved in the potentially new titles, I'm pretty much out from the start.

Man... there has been a group of us who have been waiting for this a freaking LONG time. They better not F it up! And! I so want them to do something just a little bit more than a straight-out remaster. I don't know... A game plus mode where there are weird changes here and there that don't make sense until it is revealed you've been playing a teaser for a new game forthcoming that changes the history once again. Something.

Soul Reaver Remaster should use the exact same dialogue and game structure, but rebuild the models and levels to modern standards.
Release it with playable versions of the original games.

As long as the graphics are serviceable and still stylish I dont care as long as the story is the same but with some touch ups. That story was life defining for me.

The thing I think everyone forgets when saying about all games should be available is the rights issue, maybe the publisher doesn’t want to sell or maybe already has an agreement with someone else ie Xbox, so sometimes it’s not as easy as just making a game available
Soul Reaver is great, but I would rather have Legacy of Kain reimaged, IMO. His first story was great.

I would pre-order a Bluepoint remaster of Soul Reaver today. Imagine it looking like their Demon's Soul remake but with more enemies, better combat but keeping the essence of the original.....chef kiss. Looking at the likes of Diablo or Baldur's Gate, you could have Blood Omen looking as good as that...or make it 3D and look like A Plague Tale: Requiem or Thymesia

@9:53 they won't have to stick to the original frame rate. The tomb raider games run at 30fps in classic mode but when you switch to modern it's 60/120fps

So excited! I got an email last year sometime from Crystal Dynamics where they invited me to complete a survey that was asking which IPs we were most interested in and Soul Reaver was one of the options. They also asked if we were more interested in a remaster or a remake. Did you guys fill out that survey too?

Its about time and to be fairly honest - THQ really needs a remake of the entire series from Blood Omen Legacy of Kain all the way to the end Defiance. Make them in the same way and make the story slightly more cohesive and add and finish some of the stuff that was cut. Also on a side note, Probably FF8 and Soul Reaver had the best cinematic game openings of all time.
They need to upres them and fix some of horrendous camera controls from SR1. A full graphics overhaul would be ideal to me but they need to stay shot for shot. Seeing as some of the voice actors are no longer with us, RIP, they don't really have the option to change anything else. Not that they should.
I want a Remake that follows the script but overhauls all the gameplay/ puzzle design.
They should do a port, with maybe some minor tweaks to graphiscs/frame rate etc. that can be toggled on and off, and also a remaster/reboot with graphics that have a very darksouls/bloodbourne feel.
Perfect example of a port that improved the graphics by a lot:
Soul Reaver… on Dreamcast. ;)
Realm switching on modern gen is out there, Lords of the Fallen does a brilliant job of it, and it reminded me so much of soul reaver
I was gonna comment that for everyone interested in the PC side, the full legacy of kain games are available in GOG, but I just realized that Soul Reaver 1 is listed as "coming soon" in the gog app (I still have it installed and I had it for a long time now) and it doesn't show at all if I search the website, it only shows in my library with the same coming soon, so remaster/remake confirmed?
Edit: I still can download the installer manually so they are probably just working on licensing stuff?? I heard the PC version in GOG is a port from the dreamcast version, so not sure if that makes any difference as to why the other 4 games are available
