This seems like a blast. It looks like one of those games where your looking at your collection trying to figure out what to play and this just fits for everyone,
First time I can remember having bought a game before one of your reviews came out, so it was with some trepidation I clicked the review. Glad to hear you both really like it, can't wait for it to arrive!
I wish more companies would just use different coloured plastic. I hate getting games where everything is grey and i am expected to paint it. it is crazy to think that most people have the time and money to paint miniatures. I strongly beleive that is why arcadia quest isnt selling.
There are some interesting tactics with this to slowly clock up extra points - the first blood tokens can give you a bit of a boost, if your are sneaky with them, over time, plus getting kills and overkills is good for an end-game boost (assuming this is still in the rules)
At 5:10 I think you got the rules wrong, Tom. From what I understand you only pay the ammo cube cost that is *not* in the ribbon / weapon title panel. On the Shockwave you showed, it would actually be free to pickup. The full cost (ammo cubes within and below the ribbon) is only paid when reloading the weapon. Here's a citation from the rulebook on that: "The cost is depicted in the upper left corner of the card. When you grab the weapon, the top cube is already paid for and you must pay the remainder of the cost. If you cannot pay, you cannot grab the weapon." One question I had for you, Tom and Jason, or even anyone in the comments here: what's up with this Chainsaw I've been hearing about? Didn't come in my game and I don't believe you've mentioned either... perhaps a Kickstarter exclusive?
@@Friariello91 plays like an FPS in board game form, with a mechanic in place that discourages ganging up on just one player. If you have 3 or more it is well worth it. I have never had a bad time playing it. Tastes vary, though.
No, I didn't feel that at all. I went into this with a bit of trepidation at UK Games Expo as this sort of game - e,g, Frag - has always worked only up to a point in the past, but this really _did_ feel like playing a hectic game of Quake. _Yes_, you can't see through the eyes of your character, but 3rd persons feel more tactical, like an RTS game whereas this _really_ does have the feel of "get out there and FRAG people" - but still with a real game underneath the hood.
That's a clever disguise of a standard euro game (collect resources, area majority, almost worker placement, etc.) to lure some amerithrash into euro games or even video gamers into board gaming in general :) Props to CGE and the designer for that ;) And it could be fun, if you not analyze it for what it is and try to get into the role of you running around and shooting everything that moves :D Oh, and all those arguing about semantics. It is a FPS by its feel, no matter are you looking on it from the top or from the front or whatever.. There is no other better way of doing that. Or do you really want a board game with a first person perspective? :D I bet you are not playing a train game as "a human being placing a little bits of plastic on a piece of cardboard", you are playing trains.
This game is really fun but spending most of your time hunting down ammo and reloading makes it a little tedious. You have to move to get one you need, then you can only reload one. I spent one game swapping weapons instead of getting ammo because they start loaded.
I think it's a lost opportunity. I dislike how the board is modular. Why not have tiles that allow for far more combinations? And this would have been great to enable a capture the flag team mode with 6-8 players, which makes area control even more fun.
I completely agree. I feel that this was a "ameritrash" try from CGE, and they are not masters of that genre. Imagine if this would have been made by CoolMiniOrNot? Modular board, super minis, those additional game modes, would have been awesome.
Kristo Vaher I think you are overstating the importance of the "terrain" in this game. In a modular tiles game like Arcadia Quest the tiles have lots of different abilities, spaces for artifacts and tokens, doors, etc. Here they simply are rooms to move around.
if you mean Frag from SJG - it absolutely obliterates it. Played it at UK Games Expo and my (not played for a long time) Frag copy will never be opened again.
Looks good. It's such a unique game if you think it as an area control game where each player control and move a certain area. I wish if the theme were something like Splatoon instead of killing each others though.
Just as a clarification, "First Person" means seen from the eyes of your character. But you could simply call this a "shooter" style game. To be more accurate, I guess it's more of a top-down shooter. Not sure exactly, but it's definitely not first-person.
Dude....it isn't possible to do an fps AS AN FPS in a board game! All they mean is that they take all the elements of a first person shooter style game and translate it into a board game. They aren't trying to say that this game is ACTUALLY in the first person.
OdinWolf74 yeah but this game could just as easily be modeled after a third person shooter or a top-down shooter and you wouldn't know the difference. in fact, this is almost exactly like a top-down shooter video game.
The weapons cards definitely look like first person shooters, with the view from the character. Otherwise, yes, the board is 3rd person view, but I like how the weapon cards really evoke the 1st person feel.

This looks super fun. I can't wait to give it a try. I also agree with all the comments saying that a live play would be awesome.
It is fun! Just tried it for the first time today; glad I picked it up at SPIEL16.
Yes Yes Yes....please play this one live! :-D
Review is love, review is life.
This is like Unreal Tournament-The Board Game. Even some of the weapons have the same name
I love YOUR reviews.
i love you're reviews

Christian Kvam makes me think of that bill o Reilly clip
I gotta try this one now, sounds great.
Exactly summarised how I feel about the game.

want to try this game out. I'm surprised no one has made comparisons to "FRAG" (an older first person shooter board game)
I had made the decision to buy this game the very first time I played it before my third turn had even come up.
and now, a year after that comment, how is it? what is your opinion about this game and its replayability? tanks...
I'm going to valuating if buying it or not. Any advice?

i know cge is touting it as a 1st person shooter... but isnt it really a 3rd person shooter?

"Get out there and FRAG people"
You do that in 3rd person shooters too, you know.
Josh Aldrich tomatoes... pop corn
Excited to play this one :D

Tom, "doxxing" isn't something you do in an online game (usually, anyway). It's when you post people's personal details online.
pleeeaase play it live!
Please Play Live.

aren't there enough of those games? This being a Euro in a Amerit(h)rash jacket makes it unique and hopefully awesome
So it fires frag?
if you mean Frag from SJG - it absolutely obliterates it. Played it at UK Games Expo and my (not played for a long time) Frag copy will never be opened again.
How does this compare to Wiz-War?
It has Mechs?!?!?
Does this feel like a "dudes on a map" game?
my man! [snaps fingers]
Sweet
You mean third-person shooter? ;)
More of an Arena Deathmatch. Wouldn't be the first, not last, time references are near-misses
Does it work for two really?
Yes, correct, it is for only 3 to 5 players.

Good point about those weapon cards.
no love for Alchemists
They both really like alchemists. They just didn't mention it here - no big deal.
I LOVE your reviews.
