  • In this video, we take on the challenge of repairing a cast iron radiator using MIG welding with Silicon Bronze. Silicon Bronze has been shown to be almost as strong as unbroken cast iron, with exceptional elongation characteristics. Cast iron is known for its tricky nature, and unfortunately, not all repairs go as planned. Join us as we dive into the process, explore the difficulties, and learn from the mistakes that led to this repair failure. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced welder, this video offers valuable insights into the limitations and challenges of welding cast iron. Thats the way I see it too. I did a little research and saw folks talking about JB weld. No way would I ever try that. I can just see someone going out of town and returning to a flooded house after the JB Weld fails. It's good stuff but I wouldn't trust it on something this important

    Beyond comprehension how you manage to test the exact leaks, welding it with CUSI3(?). In the old days we repaired leaking radiaters from around 1920 with Autogene/oxygene flame and fosforcopper. But those were of steel. Yours is far way difficult to repair because of all the variables. It's a fact that 50% can be repaired. Most respect I have is the fact that you show it as it is. We all had those failures. Only thing you can do is to do your outmost. Looks like you put all your effort in it Brandon. Only deep and deep respect. Thanks for the useful info and greetz from holland. Stay healthy, safe and God blessed. Marcel Knippers😃😇👌💪

      I appreciate that Marcel. I've had the best luck with nickle but more so with silicon bronze. I felt pretty confident i could fix it but after doing a little research it appears some were cast with white iron making it not repairable. I did my best but sometimes that's all we can do. I hope you had a great weekend!

    2 things, Brandon! That setup you came up with for introducing air into the radiator was brilliant! Second, thanks for always being willing to share the failures as well as the successes. It helps us learn, and reminds us that it's OK to fail sometimes, as long as you learn from it!

    • @BrandonLund

      I don't know if that would have worked. I don't think white cast can be welded with anything but I will have to look into it because I'm not positive

    Have you tried welding with, let's say, 7018 and copper wire (a generous amount) as additive? So either wrapping copper wire around the electrode or just dipping it into the weld pool.

    You gave it a good try and it is too bad the metal did not bond. Would stick have worked better??? I remember you doing a cast iron skillet with stick, I think. Better luck next time, Brandon!!!

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Stick works great on cast but this was white cast iron and its not weldable. I'm not sure what makes white cast different from gray other than weldability, but I should have known when working it with the rotary burr. It looked light gray, so I was hopeful it would work. Hopefully the owner can locate a new end piece or a new radiator

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thanks man! Once I looked into the cost of a new radiator this size, it probably wouldn't have been worth it to the customer for me to try. I watch a lot of "pakastani" videos and they throw the entire part in home made charcoal and weld it while it's glowing bright red. I might have to try this at some point. It probably works great for not cracking.
