Hi, sabahul khayr, out of curiosity, did you focus on MSA or did you also study a dialect?
Assalamu alaykum everyone i have recently started learning arabic. Currently I am still learning how to read arabic scripture. After this, is it useful to continue learning MSA or would it be wiser to choose a specific dialect? Thank you
Thank you for your question. All Arabic dialects are derived from Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) which is the official language taught in schools and universities and is the main mode of communication in Arabic-speaking countries, whether in the media, the business world or international relations and diplomacy. It is through MSA that a native Arabic speaker from one corner of the Arab world can communicate with people from other Arabic-speaking countries. Although some learners prefer to learn the dialect of a particular country or region that they wish to visit, such as Egyptian, Gulf or Levantine Arabic, I personally believe that it is preferable to begin with MSA because, once that has been mastered, it is easier to learn colloquial Arabic from that basis. Even Arabs who have not had much formal education can usually understand MSA because it is the language of newspapers and news broadcasts, so you should find it easy to communicate wherever you go in the Middle East.
