And if you need to go out of state... don't tell ANYONE! Texas has a law that a person can get $10,000 by reporting ANYONE who helps. So, driving her out of state, paying for airfare, calling around to find clinics... yes, they get sued and pay the "bounty" to whoever reports it. Crazines!
Texas has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the country. We are high for infant mortality, as well. Let that sink in. This state SUCKS for maternal and infant care. I almost died because they left after birth inside me. I was not silent and let them know many times how bad I was feeling and how much pain I was in post partum (it wasn’t my first child). Then I told them what came out in the toilet. They still ignored me. I came into the ER a week later shaking violently. Something similar happened to a friend of mine who was pregnant the same time as me and had high blood pressure - she was ignored every time she tried to tell them something was wrong. She almost died during childbirth. Another of my friends almost lost her child because something went wrong during delivery - baby was in NICU for weeks. My three friends and I gave birth in 3 different towns around the Houston area in three different hospital systems. Let THAT sink in. We all had traumatic experiences? To me that’s indicative of a huge issue in Texas. So in this particular story, I can definitely tell you: No, the doctors were not concerned about the baby or the mother lol. They literally are incompetent and uncaring - they only care about their money. This is less about it being an abortion ban after 6 weeks state and MORE about it being full of incompetent and uncaring medical personnel who do not respect women as patients.
@@mtc-j9i Move to California, Oregon or Washington State and Texas will be a better place. But really, you can’t blame a whole state for a healthcare provider’s alleged inadequacies. That’s the story they WANT you to believe, but Texas ranks in the last quartile among all states for maternal and infant mortality. The doctors in Texas suck. Grade inflation in Texas public schools and universities is rampant. We’re dealing with pure incompetence here. Texas doctors do not listen to or respect their patients - especially if they’re women.

I want to say something about abortion that is not heard almost anywhere in this country. Though i am a Christian, by the grace of God, I believe the church has really messed this issue up in that they only seem to beat women over the head with this issue. If you are a man who got a woman pregnant then afterwards walked away from the relationship which resulted in her having an abortion, then you, (the man) must repent and ask forgiveness. If you do not, yoy WILL be held accountable before God .

@@lolabunny9013 If the fetus is dead, they are not protected by Texas law, so it couldn't be the law. I've reviewed several of these cases, such as Ms. Thurman in Georgia, and have yet to have found an example that can be blamed on a law.

In 1963, I was in labor in a hospital in Texas. The woman in the other bed in that labor room died. Childbirth sometimes has complications. Maybe now instead of talking about abortion tourism states, we should discuss high-risk residency states.
1963, are you joking? That’s 61 years ago, you do realize that was before Roe v Wade went into effect (10 years after) and women died for the same reasons now that Roe v Wade was overturned, not to mention there have been advancements in medicine? Let’s deal with anti-women states, shall we?
Exactly, and that was way before roe v wade was overturned. You have a healthy pregnancy only to go to the hospital and die in labor. Make it make sense.
I'm sorry. It actually has been all over the news that minority women, both black and Latina, have been greatly impacted by the over turn of Roe V Wade. Thurman in Georgia? Just a few days ago, a story about a young black mother who died because of a miscarriage in Texas was broadcast. This is NOT an issue to divide us on. I'm every bit as saddened and angry over those deaths. Not to mention the women who have been imprisoned while courts decide if it was indeed a miscarriage, mostly minority women. We've been told since at least the 1980s that "pro-life" religious based laws greatly disadvantage minority women and every non minority woman I know has been pro-choice since the '80s. We care. We believe you. We understand that it's not just about abortion, but quality prenatal care. Attacking Roe V Wade meant attacking women's health.
Yes, at least 3 to 1 more black women are dying then white which is terrible enough in itself! This is State sponsored murder of these poor pregnant women.
Look at the 5'4"/186 pound average? That's a 32 BMI.... Pretty sure that plays a role in Black American women's "mortality", race baiter.... They're spheres.

Actually, every single time that voters have had the chance to decide, they have voted down these imbecilic abortion laws, or put protections for women's fundamental rights into state constitutions. Every time, and in such liberal states as Kansas and Kentucky. Remember, 70% of American adults support a woman's right to choose. When people vote, the anti-choice zealots are crushed and defeated. So - VOTE.
Senate Bill 8 is also known as the Texas Heartbeat Act. It prohibits a physician from performing or inducing an abortion after a "fetal heartbeat" has been detected. The law makes exceptions for medical emergencies.
The problem is that "medical emergencies" is vaguely defined so that the state of Texas can go after them for any action that results in a dead fetus. It's then up to the doctor to defend themself and likely end up in jail. The doctors want to uphold their oath, but radical right-wing states like Texas won't let them.
Maternal deaths have gone up 56% in TX since the ban. Infants deaths have gone up 13%. Texas Supreme Court also has made it legal for hospitals NOT to provide life saving care to pregnant people or those suffering a miscarriage if that care in any way could be framed as abortive/removal of a fetus or fetal remains. Being pregnant in TX and not dying is now a lottery you play with fate.
Let's also not forget that many of the women who somehow do survive sepsis and other complications (that the hospitals COULD BUT CHOOSE NOT TO treat) have their internal organs so damaged by days of the rotting tissue, infections, and tearing that they are rendered infertile or sterile. Remind me, how is this helping bring up the national birth rate again?
Women are dying because of the Trump Abortion ban! Right now it's mostly in the heavy MAGA states but, if he is elected, this ban will become a Federal MANDATE that NO State can overrule! Texas residents get out and VOTE for Democrat candidate Colin Allred! Ted Cruz is 💯 responsible for Texas abortion law where there are NO exceptions even for the life of the mother!!!
A girl dies from a miscarriage due to not having quick and reliable access to a procedure that could’ve saved her life because abortion restrictions make it difficult, if not impossible for doctors to provide care. Idiots: “I don’t see what this has to do with abortion”
They consider it an abortion to remove the dead fetus that was causing her to go into sepsis unless her life was “in danger” which means they have to leave her till near death before they can act. Often it is too late at that point. The doctors would receive jail time & lose their license if they helped her 😢
@cows4us she had streptococcus. The baby was still very much alive given that it had a heartbeat. The baby didn't give her streptococcus or cause her to go septic. Untreated streptococcus is what most likely caused the sepsis that killed the baby and then mom. Removing the baby from the equation wouldn't have saved mom either
Sad. Did they request an abortion which was denied? It wasn't clear in the reporting and Texas law states there is an exception for situations in which the life or health of the pregnant patient is at risk.
But what people have always said about those exceptions is proving true: the legal ambiguity of what qualifies as an exception makes doctors avoid providing care out of legal risk. The people who write these laws know that. They are created to be deterrents, deprioritizing maternal care, deprioritizing women. That’s why most red states have higher maternal AND infant mortality rates, both of which have gone up post Roe.
Private practices are not always open. When I was pregnant with all of my children I was told to go to the emergency room if I had complications after hours.
I don't know what it's going to take to get back to good on this basic human right. I am old enough to remember the before times and it was brutal. The reason abortion was made legal nationally because women were dying enmass! The women with money could hop a plane to Puerto Rico and get care but women without the means were forced to go to back alley hacks or more drastic measures which killed many. I haven't looked at the numbers yet but I have seen more stories about finding newborns (alive and dead) abandoned in the last year. I'm sure there's a correlation to the new law. I know a young woman in her 30s who is a single mother of a 4 year old. She had to make the decision to have her tubes tied because she didn't want to die trying to have another and leaving her child orphaned. Another consequence of this law is the loss of medical providers to either retirement or to other states that won't jail them for doing their jobs. Pretty soon there will be a lack of experts in this field, endangering all women. Women are turning out the vote in huge numbers. I hope that a sign for change.
You cannot look at the numbers in many states with the most horrific restrictions and bans on what they consider "abortions" which is actually medical care as we have seen to SAVE THE LIVES OF WOMEN, because the politicians who passed the extreme laws designed to guarantee that women would die from lack of proper and urgent medical care also passed laws to HIDE THE DATA FROM PUBLIC SCRUTINY. Don't believe me - check out Idaho's laws, for one state. Florida also hides maternal death rates. For all I know, Texas does too. The more extreme the denial of medical care to pregnant women is, the harsher the laws become to HIDE THE TRUTH FROM THE PUBLIC. WHY DID IT TAKE TWO YEARS PLUS FOR THESE HORRIFIC EVENTS TO FINALY BE REVEALED? The Republicans know now that some truth is leaking out and people across the country are horrified by the results of what they thought was a "pro-life" thing. Thank you Pro Publica for digging into these tragic horrific events and letting we the people know what is actually happening as a result of those "pro-life" laws.
This has zero to do with abortion bans and more to do with local doctors misdiagnosing her issues. This story is framed with very little real information and serves nothing more than to upset emotional low informed people
I will say this if I was a Doctor I to would wait until she is pert-near dead or I would ,,, could might go to jail for what zero to life ! If a Doctor Offers help to early it WOULD make it look like they are,,, were ignoring the abortion laws in Texas.
This news story never stated that the law itself was the reason for the delay in "care". I dont know what happened, but it's clear that the mom has a monetary agenda and this reporter has a political agenda. And i am pro CHOICE !
"I FELT like the doctors were more worried about the baby than my daughters life." Says the MOTHER, even though her daughter wasn't critical until the baby was already known to have no heartbeat. Prison time is what would happen to a man if they ever slipped a woman an abortion pill. What's the difference...? Someone explain.
As medical provider, you want to intervene when you have the best opportunity for a full recovery. Waiting until someone is critical is proactively signing someones death certificate.
You are absolutely correct. "Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas." If the hospital bears the name of a religion on the signage, *it's not safe for a woman to enter the building,* much less get medical care there. That religion does not recognize the human right to survive a miscarriage.
Being "Pro Life" doesn't include protecting the mothers life. Doctors were more concerned about losing their license or going to jail for performing an abortion. This is the consequence of Anti-Abortion laws.
Oh but it does, anytime a woman loses a baby whether it was induced or of natural causes it is considered an abortion. Spontaneous abortion is the medical term for a miscarriage. Also there are rules and federal guideline that have to be followed in order to induce labor. Since Texas has strict penalties against doctors who don’t follow those guidelines this young woman lost her life.
She had a miscarriage? What does that have to do with abortion? Every woman who has had a miscarriage should be furious they are using this to push abortion! Pro-choice means you choose abortion, miscarriage is completely different and this sounds like she wanted the baby. NO PRO-LIFE PERSON IS AGAINST A D&C!!!!!!!!!! It is NOT the same! Please, please stop saying this, it's cruel to woman who have lost their babies due to miscarriage.
Many women miscarriage extremely slowly and this can cause them to get sepsis due to the fetus becoming infected. They need an abortion before the miscarriage is completed so technically it is an abortion as there is still a heartbeat this saves the woman’s life by preventing her from getting infection and or sepsis and other complications.
The mother even said it is because of the strict abortion ban. Did you even listen to the story before you commented? The fetus should have been aborted, and the girl would have been saved. Now, both are dead. Vote Blue like your life depends on it because it does. 💙
There are plenty of pro-l*fe people that are against D&C's because it goes against n*ture and G*d's will. D&C's are considered a type of ab*rtion so they think it's wrong.
Why are we calling a D&C for miscarriage abortion now? Why? One is a choice one is not! NO PRO-LIFE SUPPORTER IS AGAINST A D&C (PROCEDURE TO REMOVE THE BABY WHO HAS PASSED AWAY NATURALLY). IT IS SO CRUEL TO WOMEN WHO HAVE HAD A MISCARRIAGE TO SAY THEY ARE THE SAME!!!! Also, no Dr. Is saying they are the same, just same procedure. LOOK IT UP PEOPLE!
The problem is the politicians who pass these terrible laws and the people who vote the corrupt lawmakers into office. We have the power to fix this mess IF we care enough to do so. Vote!
You wouldn't do anything different if it were you. Texas is currently threatening their doctors with the death sentence or life in prison for abortion. And it's the fault of the politicians. There have been lawsuits where women have asked for language written in to prevent this type of thing, but they refuse to. A womans life is back to a coin toss when they are pregnant in some of these states. The politicians are also cowards, because they aren't being transparent about the number of deaths. They simply add in the ones that could have been saved to the ones that couldn't, which is an uptick of over 50% since Roe was overturned. So, you would be terrified too. Don't pretend you wouldn't be.
No they are afraid of loosing their licenses which is their livelihood, and being criminally charged which would equal loss of freedom. I am ARNP and getting my license took years of hard work, dedication and money. It's not fair to put the onus on the doctors and other providers as opposed to the law makers who are representatives that were voted into office.
I am so sorry to hear this unfortunately we have an ER Just like this.i sure hope you are able to get justice for your girl. State poking in with health care so sad
exactly. this story has an agenda. this mother most likely needed a c/s to save baby not an abortion. C/S to save herself as well so that she could get treatment in ICU for sepsis
It's very unlikely that a 26 week foetus, from a mother in distress, would be viable. From a healthy mother, the chance of viability without severe morbidity is well under 50%. And anytime a foetus is removed, except birth, is called an abortion.
Did she an OB? I would have called my OB and gone to another hospital. Plus she should have been seen by L&D not ER they don’t know anything. Sounds like she had an abruption I mean at least she needed baseline labs and prolonged monitoring. That is basic care all Docs should know. If they don’t call a Maternal/ Fetal specialist on the phone. Ours help all day and all night from only what we hear it sounds like they missed something. I mean sadly the hospital can’t say anything because there are other reasons this can happen as well. In the end Texas needs to address this issue because it is ridiculous for a doctor to fear being persecuted for doing basic needed care that is the protocol for what happened.
It doesn't sound like she received any kind of proper medical care whatsoever. Single 18 year old female, probably not much money. Millions of American women are in similar positions, poor - no pre-birth medical care, etc. because they aren't insured and can't afford to pay cash for care. She literally waited until she was desperately ill to seek care in an emergency room where hospitals are obliged to treat you but then we all know they try to kick you out to the curb as soon as possible when they aren't being paid lots of money to provide the patient with proper care. WHY DO REPUBLICANS HATE AMERICAN WOMEN SO MUCH?
She actually saw two OB-GYNs at two separate hospitals. This poor girl was failed by just about everyone - her doctors, nurses, state, and even county. Let’s not fail our women and girls again by giving Trump another opportunity to make things even more dangerous for women.
Sometimes abortions are in the wheel house of medical treatments... Christians receiving the blowback of their uneducated decisions guided by their sycophantic tendencies. JUSTICE IS ALWAYS SERVED
correct, but the confusion surrounding Texas law has led to some doctors in the state being hesitant due to potential imprisonment. I live in Texas. A lot of docs here don't want to handle pregnant women anymore.
This situation has absolutely nothing to do with abortion, but rather emergency medical care of a pregnant woman who was not seeking an abortion. This issue lies with the people providing care not abortion laws. Too bad the whole story was not told and unrelated laws were inappropriately applied.
No it has to do with abortion. Many women need emergency abortions to save their life. For example if a woman is miscarrying slowly the fetus can become infected which can cause things like sepsis for the women which are life-threatening. Since there is still a heartbeat technically it is an abortion to terminate to protect the mothers health and life.
The article never says the baby was the problem, until it had already passed. There is way too little information to deduce the mother could have survived if the baby was delivered. In fact, by all indications, the mother was never denied care for a problem with the baby. Therefore, one cannot deduce from the information provided, that delivering the baby prematurely would have helped. In fact, the article never indicates she was denied this option. Therefore, saying this is an abortion issue is unfounded. That was my point. Bringing this topic into the interview is unfounded and not a logical conclusion.

It’s sad that people are assuming the problem/main issue is specifically abortion. @@soliniv1411TRUMP 2024
They seem to do this in majoroty minoroty areas. Coincidence much?

Idiots: “I don’t see what this has to do with abortion”
They consider it an abortion to remove the dead fetus that was causing her to go into sepsis unless her life was “in danger” which means they have to leave her till near death before they can act. Often it is too late at that point. The doctors would receive jail time & lose their license if they helped her 😢
@cows4us that's just not true.

This is why red states in average have higher maternal AND infant mortality. Maternal care is not valued.
You are absolutely correct. "Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas." If the hospital bears the name of a religion on the signage, *it's not safe for a woman to enter the building,* much less get medical care there. That religion does not recognize the human right to survive a miscarriage.
This is disgusting 💙💙💙
Being "Pro Life" doesn't include protecting the mothers life. Doctors were more concerned about losing their license or going to jail for performing an abortion. This is the consequence of Anti-Abortion laws.
That has nothing to do with abortion. More spin, more lies.
Except it does. Doctors in Texas have to be *extremely* conservative with their treatment of their female patients due to the law.

How was this NOT murder of Nevaeh?
an abortion wouldn't have saved her life. a C/s to save baby and pt straight to ICU for most likely a SEPSIS from strep and causing organ failure
Outrageous
At 6 months, this would have been a viable delivery and has nothing to do with abortion. This would be malpractice.
The fetus was dead. What's the point of trying to "avoid being prosecuted for breaking the abortion laws" WHEN THE FETUS WAS DEAD!
exactly. c/s for baby and mother to ICU to treat most likely sepsis from strep
@@honestlyno4240 I've heard many OBs have stopped practicing medicine, and those that are left are afraid to intervene unless the fetus in nonviable.

@@nlgrrtt then why aren't the fucking hospitals giving it? Fucking moron
correct, but the confusion surrounding Texas law has led to some doctors in the state being hesitant due to potential imprisonment.
This is something that should be lied about.
What? What the hell are you talking about? Lie about women dying for lack of proper medical care by cowardly doctors who break their oaths now daily across the country and let women bleed to death or die from rotting inside out by refusing to remove dead fetuses?
Rest in Peace sweet baby girl with your baby and may you both fly with the angels watching over all your loved ones! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 There are no words to express how this needed not to happen at all!!!!! Sending love and light to surround your family! ❤️❤️🙏🙏🌟🌟 Shame on the hospitals staff! They did not uphold their vow!!
These doctors need to be held ACCOUNTABLE for not doing their jobs. The laws have to change when it comes to the mother's life as well its confusing.
The doctors are scared to do anything because the state has threaten their lives with stripping their license and or jail time
It is the law not the Doctor's.
the law is confusing. doctors aren't lawyers to understand especially when the laws are already vague.
Doctors are worried they'll get the death penalty if they go through with it.
@@miguelguzman8365they're not scared. The media is lying. You absolutely can treat her if her life is in danger (ie: baby has died and sepsis has developed). How do we go from the baby having a heartbeat to the mother dying? They're purposefully leaving out MAJOR details. We need more info.

What’s that going to do?
@V4VestA Make you cry in your basement again
One last Hail Mary… you guys are getting really desperate and pathetic…
Why can’t these doctors that let young women die get charged with malpractice?
Because it’s down to Texas law, they have to wait until a pregnant patient is critical and that varies. If they acted too fast and the fetus dies they could be jailed, . Sad but the only way to change this is by voting.
The laws in Texas are ridiculous. A Dr can get up to 99 years and hundreds of thousands in fines. The heartbeat law republicans pushed is the main culprit.
Misdiagnosis isn't malpractice.
Why was she going to Emergency Room for neo-natal care. Mom sounds irresponsible for not taking her to the correct Dr's. Now she wants to make it political, people always looking for someone to blame.
She saw two OB-GYNs and two different hospitals. Her mom did everything she could within a system that’s been crippled by ill-informed laws made by people who aren’t doctors. This is the result of those laws
All these deaths were avoidable had the law not changed, these republicans care nothing about the women, God will hold all accountable . Prayers to all women
Ya, he's not upset at you for the million abortions last year... You're an id$ot.
wrong. c/s to save baby and mother to ICU to treat SEPSIS from strep infection causing multi organ failure.

Vote, sad 😔 😢 rip young lady.
If the fetus was deceased why didnt they perform an immediate D&C. Its NOT an abortion, hospital dropped the ball. Blaming it on STRICT abortion law is BS. Lawsuits to follow against the hospital is my guess.
in order to avoid complications they need to abort as soon as symptoms arrive even if the the fetus has a heartbeat.
@@Avy42F not true!
@@9290SC if they only abort when her life is at risk then it has a higher chance for the operation to fail.
@@Avy42F excepts thats not an abortion :)
@@9290SC they weren’t able to do the surgery because by the time they’d verified the fetus had died, her condition had declined to the point that it was too dangerous. If Texas law didn’t pressure doctors to wait until after the fetus has passed (and also provide plenty of documentation proving it no longer had a heartbeat) they could have done the surgery sooner, while the girl was still healthy enough to survive it
It’s sad that people are assuming the problem/main issue is specifically abortion. When in fact, the real problem has nothing to do with this - the problem is a lack of parenting and care from the parents, allowing their daughter to be sexually active as a minor in HS and have unprotected sex and get pregnant just finishing HS. THIS is the problem
Who did Ms. Fails and her daughter SUPPORT in the elections? WHO did they vote for? WHO's policies did they WANT so bad?
Even IF they did vote for it, nobody deserves this. It was unethical. People vote for stupid things they don’t understand, and unfortunately it ends tragically like this. We warned them this would happen, but we should show grace anyway. A young 18 year old woman is gone now, I don’t care what her politics were, someone that young never deserved an unfortunate demise. I hope these stories become wake up calls for everyone voting for misogynistic laws passed by bigots.
Good question.

Tragic, but not because of abortion laws, sounds like malpractice. But either way woman have died because of pregnancy since there have been women. Go rest with god.
This has nothing to do with Roe v Wade. It sounds like incompetency on the part of the medical staff. I have never in my 68 years heard of no treatment for situations such as this. Never.
No in Texas since the overturning of Roe v. Wade it has been a 53% increase in maternal mortality
@@dorino9057 And the reason is behind that mortality is what? Not due to lack of abortions. A abortion is literally never required to save life of the mother. Ask any ob/gyn. And if you're implying that physician's are scared to treat patients, then that's just not true. There are not laws against this. And they know people are ignorant and will just eat up all the lies that are spewed in regard to reproductive laws, by the media gods.
This has EVERYTHING to do with Roe v. Wade and the Dobbs decision because women are dying all across the country from exactly the same lack of care. WAKE UP. The stories are finally coming out after two years of women suffering pain and agony that we can't even begin to imagine and dying deaths that often leave young children, husbands and family members behind pounding their heads wondering what went wrong. Well - they voted evil people into positions of power who don't give a damn about innocent women dying all across the country from lack of medical care for pregnancies gone wrong. Do you think ANY of those Justices who voted to kill Roe v. Wade would let ANY OF THEIR DAUGHTERS OR GRAND-DAUGHTERS SUFFER SUCH A FATE?
Texas law allows physicians to do what is necessary to save a mother's life. Physicians need to know how, and need to act, when appropriate.
